Being a British colony, Malta was introduced to railway as early as 1883, where it stood operational until 1930

We didn't know that. Thanks for the info!

My father was a railway modeller and he passed this passion to me and my son. In 1985 he made his first exhibition of The Malta Railway where he modelled all the six stations there were on the island. He passed away in 2019 and the Museum of The Malta Railway is under my care. This year I started a restoration process of the exhibit. I am planning to open the Museum again some time next year.

It's sad that there are no railways on Malta today. They could have helped a lot with the congested traffic on the island!

I’m always delighted by British Railways and I’m still amazed by how there used to be passenger areas which were basically boxes.

Worth mentioning that the expansion of railway to the British colonies provided a large market for British railway technology and construction.

The White Paper for the grouping envisaged 6 railway companies. The big difference was that the old NER remained independent (absorbing tge H&BR) and the railways of Scotland were to be amalgamated.

8:34 Talks about early railways in the UK, shows early railroad in the US.
@SirKenchalot Жыл бұрын
You didn't mention the Common Carriers Act that required railways to carry anything at government set prices that crippled their ability to compete with road carriers who were not bound by the act; government intervention that helped collapse an industry much like the Interstate Commerce laws in the US that did the same for great railways like the New York Central.
@RailwaysExplained Жыл бұрын
The complete truth. There were so many moments that shaped the development of British railways, which is why it is a series of three videos. As a result, we accidentally (some deliberately) missed some moments and milestones.
@SirKenchalot Жыл бұрын
@@RailwaysExplainedI think this was a crucial one as the comparison to motor vehicles is hardly fair without making mention of the uneven rules by which each traded and served industry. Congrats on your 100K subscribers but I'm unsubscribing.
@TalesOfWar Жыл бұрын
@@SirKenchalot This is still true. Rail is expected to make direct profit from the infrastructure itself while road isn't. It's understood (and accurately so) that building the infrastructure benefits the wider economy which indirectly makes the return on the investment. Such thinking is never used with rail in this country (and I'm sure we're not unique in that mindset). That's why we balk as a country at the cost of HS2 (a cost that's estimated over around 40 years of building the thing) but never at the cost of building a new road, or motorway, or more lanes on an existing road or motorway. Or getting rid of the hard shoulder to add a new lane. People just accept the tens of billions we spend on such things every year that vastly outcost the price of building a new high speed line up the length of the country.
@SirKenchalot Жыл бұрын
@@TalesOfWar Or half way up the country between 2 places that were already connected by rail twice, as HS2 has now been reduced to. Given a few more months and it'll be a Coventry to Brum shuttle that's just served by trams.

@@SirKenchalot It's basically the most expensive branch line ever built.

The timing of this is fantastic, what with the future of HS2 almost certainly down the council gritter. 48km/h is also pretty remarkable for our current rail network given how poorly it's run.

Watching this after learning about Sunak's HSR trims makes me wonder about the will of respective governments that have pushed its railways to shit. Also, why did UK not approach any HSR owner/operator existing in Europe for assistance? SNCF has assisted some of the most successful HSR endeavours of several nations while hosting one of the best in its own nation, they could've helped plan better

I honestly don’t understand what the benefits are of a private railroad system. Small businesses can’t run rail lines on their own. Private rail companies have historically always put profits over quality service which can be detrimental to certain areas as we all rely heavily on railroads. In my eyes a private railroad is like having a private military. You’re giving people who have historically been extremely greedy and only motivated by money far too much freedom and control.
