Its not that hard to understand really. Brainiac was Vril Dox, one of the smartest colueans of his time. He became obsessed with Knowledge and left his world to study life. He eventually becomes so obsessed he bonds with technology turning mad. He forgets who he is and creates Avatars of himself while he collects knowledge on his mother ship. His Avatars mad like him invade civilizations just to steal their world for Brainiacs collection. He takes over Krypton's tech and destroys their world. Faces Superman multiple times. The end.

Here's how you do Brainiac; have him be a knowledge-obsessed rogue Kryptonian AI who took over a vessel shortly after the death of Krypton, morphed it into his skull-ship and spent 20-25 years collecting cities, live specimens and information for research purposes (and at one point constructing an artificial world named Culo to study how a society builds up) before learning about Clark and deciding to capture and study him too. Milton Fine is either an alias that he uses on Earth or the name of a Metahuman who serves as his Herald. This sh*t doesn't need to be complicated, but DC just can't help themselves.

They also altered Brainiac 5 for no good reason. Originally he was the descendent of a child the android Brainiac adopted to maintain a human disguise. When they made Brainiac organic they made it where the organic Brainiac was Brainiac 5's great-great grandfather. So far, so good, not too complicated, and they explained that Coluans are very long lived so you had only five generations over 1,000 years. Then they messed up it by establishing that "Brainiac" was a title given to the most intelligent Coluan. In the miniseries "Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds" they introduced Brainiac 6 who has no relationship to the original Brainiac.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned, but the reason Brainiac became an android was a legal dispute. There was a toy company who manufactured a somewhat popular "home computer" called Brainiac who had a trademark on this name in the US, and it was around before the comics characters first appearance. When they discovered Brainiac was now a recurring villain in the Superman comics they contacted DC. After some back and forth it was decided that DC would be allowed to continue calling the character Brainiac as long as he was turned into a "living computer" and the first issue to feature this also advertised the Brainiac toy. It's like the 1960s version of when a character in Marvel is changed to be like in the MCU movies, more or less. Or if you want to go way back, the same reason Alfred was changed from a portly, clean-shaved guy into the thin, mustachoid design we know.

god, the Milton Moses Fine "arc" for Brainiac was really convoluted, makes me laugh that instead of just streamlining him, they just made him more complicated. then, it is revealed on the THE modern Brainiac story (called...Brainiac) that the alien that got teleported was just another probe and the "real" Brainiac was just out there in space shrinking cities and destroying suns. jesus christ, man, i love the green dude, but good lord, DC had the chance to just streamline everything, but nope. i think they actually *wanted* to keep Moses Fine as the main Brainiac reboot but changed plans. if you ever do a part two, Mr. Rogues, i would love to see it!
