I love the dichotomy between Kenshi Yonezu and Hachi. One is known for making an inspiring heroic anime opening while the other is known for making absolute batshit insane music. Whenever I tell non-Vocaloid fans that they are the same person their reaction is priceless lol.

I really love how you can still see the 'Hachi' in a lot of Kenshis music as well; Hachis music feels like it was edgier, but his music as Kenshi Yonezu still has the same whimsy and experimental feeling to it and (at times) fucking insanity lol; some of my favourite examples of this are Poppin'Apathy, POP SONG and Living Dead Youth :D If you listened to some of Hachis music, and then Yonezus songs like Peace Sign, Lady or Sayonara Mata Itsuka you'd 100% be confused as hell, but the more you listen the more it makes sense 100%

Hachi actually left comments in the description under the videos of his songs. They give small hints as to what the song is about. For instance, the comment for “Donut Hole” is (translated): “The goal is to feel like a shounen manga.” Hachi was in a band during high school but left because of differing ideals. He then went to focus on making vocaloid songs. Under “Musunde Hiraite Rasetsu to Mukuro” the comment is “The theme for this time is ‘incompatibility’ and ‘innocence’.”
@divisix0242 жыл бұрын
Hachi specifically said in a later interview that Rasetsu to Mukuro is “not about prostitution”. He writes diaries sometimes in his own blog. In one of the entries titled “BGM” he writes about a story about his encounter with a black cat. Translation: “Last night I saw a cat near my home. There’s few street lights, so I couldn’t see more than a shadow, but it was the silhouette of a cat. I had seen it last year at the same place and around the same time. It was my motivation to make ‘Musunde Hiraite Rasetsu to Mukuro’. The lyrics ‘a cat with one leg missing’ is about that cat. It looked towards me for a bit before walking off as if it saw nothing. I don’t really know if they’re the same cat, but I’m somewhat happy. I’m looking forward to meeting it again.”

The ending of Matryoshka pv with the white face looks like a mummy to me, maybe it means someone’s dead? There’s the line “until there’s only one left” 「だった一人になる前に」 In fact there’s an interpretation of that whole song’s lyrics about the infamous Russian criminal “The Werewolf” Mikhail Popkov.

The scary, feverish, creepy, jittery, unstable elements to that earlier work really reflect how the world can feel to autistic folks especially, because the world is a mess and our brains don't understand it. i think donut hole is about someone losing someone close to them, but through betrayal. you're friends with someone for a long time and you have a lot of trust in them, but then they do something unforgivable and you hardly know who they are, so you cut them out of your life. you still want to turn to them for help, but you can't really do that because "were they ever actually the person you trusted?"
@TsukiAkuma32104 жыл бұрын
Listening to how Hachi's past was REALLY makes me feeling like the song Panda Hero is definitely about escapism. Due to the fact of the talk about baseball, and (I'm going by the english lyrics here) they mention a golden bat which makes me think of Lil' Slugger from the Paranoia Agent anime who basically attacks people who are having troubles to help them escape from it. Plus the talk of opium which is another thing people abuse to escape things definitely makes it seem like that song is a cry for help.

Hachi has no style in music?? (i know you didn't mean it a bad way btw), I feel like he does but it's a ver dynamic one and that's why his songs all sound different, because most of the time I listened to his songs not knowing or reading it was him and thought 'This sounds like Hachi', even when I heard Peace Sign I didn't know it was him but I heard it and thought 'That sounds similar to Hachi, this makes me kind of nostalgic', until that point I thought Kenshi Yonezu and Hachi were two different people with songs that sound completely different but gave a similar vibe...
@Nezumi--4 жыл бұрын
i kinda think his type of melodies, how he works with the notes, as well as his way of layering harmonies, is very Yonezu, no matter what he does, but then the style eaceh song is in, yes, is completely different.. i mean across all his works, if you take Foorin's Paprika, Arashi's Kite, Hachi's Matryoshka, and Yonezu's Decollete , they're all completely different styles,. and they're all still so very him...

As someone who religiously followed Hachi's work as a teen up to and through his albums as Kenshi Yonezu, it's really amusing to me when people are like "Kenshi Yonezu is Hachi???" 😂😂😂😂 Hachi/Kenshi's style has evolved drastically throughout the years but it's fun to see how things have stayed the same; you still see certain quirks in song structure, rhythms, and chord progression. I notice that the vast majority of his songs throughout his whole career focus on the theme of desperately wanting to be loved in the midst of violent self-hatred, which is really powerful. It's maybe not a universal theme but one that hits hard with people that do connect with it.
@Nezumi--4 жыл бұрын
i always felt like yonezu's words aren't dissimilar from my poetry, (though admittedly i'd be looking at translations), it always seemed like what he was trying to sing was something i'd always wanted to say but struggled to... and you're so right about the structures and chord progressions, he also throws them in a surprising direction sometimes too.. but his melodies, he plays with notes in a way that's so him, no matter what style of song. harmonies too. even when he arranged Kite for Arashi to sing, i love Arashi but those weren't the way their voices usually were done.. it was still very much Yonezu...

Hearing how disconnected he was from his peers and his family really struck a cord with me. I cannot tell other people's emotion for the life of me. I can barely tell my own emotions apart most of the time. How people can go around and casually have conversations with others and read the emotion of the others and know what others are feeling at a glance is such a foreign concept to me. I can also relate to not speaking with your parents despite living in the same household. I can't remember a time when I ever had a conversation with my parents that wasn't about school or other formal topics. To know that I'm not alone in these struggles really means so much to me. Stories like these is one of the reasons I love vocaloid so much.

I have a theory on Donut Hole. Maybe it's too far-fetched but I think it's a nice one. Donut Hole is about someone being unable to remember who they were in the past, maybe a gender transition, and feeling nostalgic about the person they were in their past. It would be a loved one, since it is themselves, but someone they didn't like being, that's why the dark voice and the "bye bye we won't see eachother again". That's why that person is pictured in a positive and negative light. They are whatever they chose to be and changed everything, whats why they cannot prove the original was there, but they know, that's the Donut Hole. The hand at the end maybe is reaching to a mirror or some thing that reflects them. But truly, the beauty of Hachi's songs is the many ways one can interpret them suiting one's persons way of thinking. Nice video btw!

Honestly those were similar to my thoughts as well. I personally don't even see it talking about another person. I see it as talking about the self. I believe it's a conversation between the person he was supposed to be and the person he actually was. My interpretation is that he threw away the person he actually was in order to let the person he was supposed to be (aka, societally expected of him to be) come out. And then the donut hole represents the person he was, and it's a stark memory because he threw himself away. Idk, I'm still really struck by OP saying how he never talked to his dad for more than an hour for a large part of his early life. I can't imagine the kind of darkness he'd feel from that lack of parental love and I just tried to put my feet in his shoes, and also keep in mind the contexts that surrounds Japan's toxic workaholic culture and how because of the need to look good in front of others, it puts a lot of pressure to keep up a good image and if he was autistic, I can't imagine it was handled well since Japan is still lacking when it comes to mental health education. I know it's probably a LOT better now (I hope) but back then, some people definitely had to deal with a lot of shit.

I've always thought it was multiple personalities disorder or something because some of the personalities sometimes merge into one to make one whole alter, both exist yet don't anymore. So all the merged alter is saying goodbye to the two that became her along with the rest of the alters. As a longtime fan of hachi/kenshi yonezu (a follower since Hanataba), I understand your last part of the video. But also, I feel really grateful for Hachi and his music. I struggled a lot with depression and Hachi’s work gave me so much inspiration. I don’t know how to word it well, but his music and work really saved me? I feel like I projected heavily onto him and his works. I knew he was depressed and his background was bad, but I was also witnessing his steady climb to success (both commercial and mental). I was able to see him overcome what was troubling him, release by release. It helped me a lot because I was troubled too. It made me realize that I can be strong like him too. He was (and still is) one of my biggest inspirations, and his music is one of my biggest comforts. You know how sometimes when you have absolutely nothing left, you cling onto a reason for living? Hachi/Kenshi Yonezu’s music and releases was that (reason for living) for me. Like you said, there is a clear progression in his music where you can perhaps see his mental lowest, to where he is today. Just witnessing that…made me feel like it will all come to pass. He could overcome it, I watched him overcome it, and it inspired me to take those steps for myself. I’m in a much better place now, and so is he. Hachi is an artist in every sense of the word. I’m so glad I found your channel, and I absolutely enjoy your analyses on his work (a yankee analysis please lol) as well as every other producer you mention here. It’s such a wonderful blast to the past so keep up the good work (seeing qualia in this video got me so excited and nostalgic you can't even believe). Like I said, I can’t word what I feel towards hachi and his music just right, but I feel an extreme sense of gratitude to be able to listen and experience his works the way I did at the time I was able to.

I love this video so much. I'm a HUGE Hachi fan and some of my favorite songs by him are a few of my favorites. Persona Alice, Hakuchi, and Terpsichore Theatric are some of my favorites but truly I love all of his songs. One inaccuracy I noticed is the mention of prostitution, an interpretation of Musunde Hiraite (as well as Ward room 305 apparently) that he has stated multiple times that he HATES. The song is meant to be about childhood bullying, but a lot of wordplay from that song is overlooked or taken incorrectly and he's stated that he is very upset and off put by these interpretations of the songs.

And the person, saying the story in the song, got so caught up with other things. years later after they part, had forgotten who they were with; it being so bad even who their name was. And because of that they know it sounds bad they feel empty, thus the whole donut hole metaphor. It had never occurred to me that it might of been a dead loved one..

I thought donut hole was about two friends. One of them forgot the existence of the other. And the other miss him really much, but is slowly forgotting them, even tho they want him back because them feel empty and alone (I was really alone at childhood, and people used to not remember my existence, maybe why I had this interpretation

I always thought that Donut Hole was about an amnesiac being unable to remember their lover. Even though the amnesiac is recovering other memories, they're too embarrassed to tell their lover that they still don't remember anything about them. The stress of it all gets to them and leads them to a panic attack or their death bed. At the end of the song they either remember their name as they die or just in time to tell the lover and calm down. I never knew that the interpretation you gave was actually a thing, but the way his music can give multiple interpretations is what makes me love Hachi/Yonezu's work.

I also had no idea it was his songs Haha, I personally think that it goes really well with Glutamine's kind of singing, it's always the best when I listen to it, or with 96neko and Viptenchou....man I miss him ! 😭 I really like your videos, thanks a lot for everything I really miss this era and the nostalgia I feel listening to all of this, aaah this is making me cry srsly, Vocaloid and Utaite songs helped me a lot at that time, everyday I'd always listen to it to feel better, I'd just feel it in my bones, ah man I'll cry for real lmao, I would always listen to Hachi's songs every time I got bullied or just when I was alone, I didn't relate to anyone either, except for him now that I know more about his life... Ah truly, thanks for this awesomeness I really appreciate the hard work put into each and every one of your videos, it's amazing ! Thanks a lot friend !

Kenshi Yonezu has long been my favorite as well. His music has always captivated me, but Loser changed me. Bootleg as an album helped me process a really bad time. I think Yonezu's so popular because he understands and can convey loneliness and insecurity better than anyone else. When I listen, I don't feel so lonely. I don't feel like I need to be brave in front of him. I think this line from Teenage Riot sums it up the best. "If I'm more alone than anyone else, Then a song that reaches someone more than anyone - I can sing it; it's so idiotic"

Woah, while I've haven't heard all of his songs I can't believe Matryoshka (an og for me), dune (which has been sitting in my watch later since release), Hold, Release; Rakshasa and Carcasses (one of my ult, since playing it in f2nd), and ms. Pumpkin (which I heard for the first time while playing diva x) and peace sign (a fan favorite op) were all made by the same person! The talent and Versatility leaped out! As someone who is neurodivergent and has depression the journey his music took really speaks to me.

I remember coming across LemonTeaBloops' cover of Eine Kleine on youtube, years after my Vocaloid phase, and thinking "it's such a sweet, melancholic, yet hopeful song". I was flabbergasted that the original singer and composer of that song was the one who wrote Matryoshka and Panda Hero. His sound has changed so much, and I agree through his songs I can tell his state of mind went from depressive and messy in his Vocaloid years, to somehow brighter and more hopeful even with a tinge of melancholy. Some even still have that feel of tongue-in cheek indifference (Mad Head Love, Poppin' Apathy, Flamingo) that reminds me of his earlier music, but they sound less chaotic and dark. Kenshi Yonezu is really a wonder, a genius, and he'll be one of my favorite artists for a long, long time.

In my opinion the thing that makes Donut Hole and Matoroyoshka similar is the art style. And there IS something similar in the songs.

Kinda late and I know But there's a huge debate over the "true meaning" of the song matriyoshka Its commonly believed that the meaning was that there was no meaning but some other people think it's about one of them (gumi) dying to be more close to miku in a way (thus turning black and white), if you wanna hear the rest of the theory tho I recommend looking in the comments for it because it's a really good although long theory Or that they both died in some sort of a suicide cult

i found out a couple yrs now, after first having heard Tomatryoshka, a parody of Matryoshka.. i love the parody, found the original and loved that too. then separately watched my hero academia and loved the Peace Sign song...... but it was actually coz of Suda Masaki (an actor) singing Long Hope Philia at the end of the My Hero Academia season ...2 i think? that i got curious and looked up Suda's work, only to find he'd done a duet with this guy called Yonezu. I loved the duet, but Yonezu sounded familiar. Found out he sung Peace Sign. okay. I got hooked and loved all the other songs..... and then Matryoshka showed up as a suggested video and i :O

Personally I feel like Donut Hole is about knowing that there is someone still alive that you will never connect with again. Maybe it could be an ex-lover, or an estranged family member, but in the end it’s about the pain of feeling empty as you try reaching for them, only to have those feelings unreciprocated. That being said, I don’t even understand the basic point of some of Hachi’s songs so I could be wrong

Dude, I've just discovered your channel and you don't know how much pleasure it gives me to see such qualitative videos on Vocaloid music! God, I listened to a lot of this stuff when I was in college but it was so hard to find information in English (and even worse in French) on this subject ! I just started listening to it again after finding my old playlist :') Just for this time I thank youtubes recommendations, your channel is a gold mine, I love the way you analyze this world so special Thank you very much for making these kinds of videos, representing and explaining all these things I didn't know at the time. Great video. I cant remember if I commented on another video, but I’m starting to sorta get into vocaloid and these videos are interesting. I say sorta, since Im mainly a metalhead and I dislike a lot of the stuff I’ve heard. Though I’d still prefer it over mainstream pop- anyway... The creator who got me into vocaloid was Utsu-P, RENAISSANCE appeared in my youtube feed a couple weeks ago, and I watched it out of curiosity. ... Have you ever heard a vocaloid scream? I liked it more than I thought I would.

I really love Matryoshka and is quickly becoming my favorite song of this whole genre (granted I haven’t heard a lot of it) because it’s such a good reflection of his feelings and emotional state it’s impossible to ignore. Some people don’t understand it and that makes sense cause not everyone has “been there”. You don’t necessarily have to have a form of autism to be in that manic and hyper state and I think every part of the lyrics connect to either chaos or “push through it”. I’d rather not do all of that here to keep this semi long, thank you for reading.

Ive have listened to Hachi’s music for almost a decade and now listen to Kenshi‘s pretty much daily. I had no idea he struggled so much in his life. Your videos are what’s very much needed in the vocaloid community because there are still not enough people who actually care for the actual persons behind the songs. I hope your channel continues to grow!

You have a real talent for speaking, it's a very good pace and you're very clear and understandable while expressing a natural tone. With that very genuine praise, I would really like you to consider your arguments more. There are many vague statements, and stating Panda Hero was one of the strangest songs you've heard on NND may be subjectively true, but is particularly confusing as it's not exactly pushing any boundaries in experimental music. That's not me trying to be a music snob or anything. I love these songs, and I'm not exactly well-educated on cutting edge music, myself. It's emblematic of a recurrent problem in the videos of yours I've watched, where sweeping or hyperbolic statements make it hard for me to really consider your arguments to be convincing. Better research (looking at the genres Official Orange is listed under in VocaDB to see it's considered experimental rock, and getting a feel for that genre, would give you better context) and less vast conclusions (saying it stands out from conventional production of the time for its atypically harsh and uncomfortable features) would really improve the quality of your writing. I really hope you continue making more videos, I can't wait to see how you grow as an analyst.

What surprised me the most is when I found out that the same person who wrote panda hero, donut hole; matryoshka etc. is the same person who wrote (and sings) Flamingo, Loser and yes the person who wrote peace sign (second op from boku no hero) and I like both the vocaloid producer and singer version of him. The fist time I listened to Panda hero it was a cover from Mafumafu with other utaite. Later I listened to the vocaloid version it s one of my favourites. I didn t know anything about his past though. Thanks for the video!

I would like to see a video about donut hole if you have the time.My impression is that the protagonist is looking for their own repressed memories, and at the end when they say "your name is" and then disappear it's them remembering that it was them all along and becoming whole. The entire point of the visuals in the music video is to mimic someone who has lost themselves and is sinking into a proverbial hole while trying to remember who they really are. It also shows the split personality between the protagonist and the parts of themselves they're trying to get back as it flashes between several different characters. I literally wrote like 6 paragraphs just now about it but figured it would be too much for a youtube comment but please explore the idea and look more into the lyrics because they're not translated very well. If you want me to post the massive essay I wrote I can also do that too.
