In 1989, the Coca Cola Classic, a college football regular season game held at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, was supposed to take place between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Kansas State Wildcats. But with Kansas State geared up and ready to go play in the game, the game organizers told Kansas State to shove it. And to say that Kansas State was furious about this would be an understatement

That game was dubbed the "toilet bowl", and lived down the the name. K-State had a chance to win on a last second field goal, and actually had a decent kicker (about the only decent position on the whole team), but the o-line was like a sieve and KU was able to block the field goal and preserve the tie. According to my dad, some sports writer at the start of the 1987 season ranked all the teams before the season started and ranked KU third-to-last, Wichita State second-to-last and K-State last. The only thing that was off about that was that Wichita State had dropped football at the end of the previous season. To this day, it's hard to tell if the writer was unaware of this, or if he was making a point that K-State was worse than a team that no longer existed...

K-State home attendance was so bad that they sold their home games vs OU to play them in Norman. Basically OU told them they could pay K-State more money if they played their home games in Norman rather than play them in Manhattan. I think this went on for just 4 years, as K-State beat OU in Manhattan in 93.

I was a student as Kansas State in the mid-80s. That team was awful. Tough sledding all the way around. Unfortunately it was just business as usual then. The KSU football media guide was entered in a competition with some other schools earlier in the 80s, and they were told that their guide would have won, but the staff had omitted a page on the team's bowl history. There had been no bowl history up to that point. None. Bill Snyder's job there was truly miraculous. KSU also had very possibly the worst season ever in 1962. 0-10 with an aggregate score of 283 to 39. Through their first seven games that season, the Wildcats had scored six, count 'em, SIX points. If that isn't the worst season ever, it is certainly in the running.

Ah, yes, good old Doug Weaver. He was K-State's coach from 1960 to 1966, and in 7 seasons he had THREE winless seasons and only 8 victories vs 60 losses and one tie. Only K-State would have kept a coach that inept around for that long.

There was a little drama off the field for the 93 game that you mentioned. Wisconsin was playing for their first tripe to the Rose Bowl in 30 years and their first bowl game over all in 10 years. When the Badgers orignally agreed to play in Toyko, they gave up their home game with Michigan State to do it. They were so bad the year they made the agreement that they thought that going to Toyko would be a "bowl game" for the team since they likely weren't going to a real one. Well, when the Toyko game became for a trip to the Rose Bowl for Wisconsin, local business owners became furious because that would be a ton of money they would make if the game were held in Madison as originally scheduled. They were openly complaining to the local newspaper and TV stations about it saying the game should have stayed in Madison and demonizing Wisconsin for agreeing to go to Tokyo. Of course they overlooked one small detail that kills their argument entirely. That detail is that the game with Michigan State that Wisconsin gave up to play in Toyko was originally scheduled to take place...in OCTOBER of 93. The Toyko game was played in December. That means they already would have played MSU under the original schedule and already locked into the Rose Bowl. The game for the right to go to the Rose Bowl would have been in Champaign, Illinois. There never would have been a game in Madison for the right to go to the Rose Bowl. OF course there is also the BIg Ten refusing ESPN's request to delay the start of the football game to accomodate the basketball game ESPN was airing prior to it, meaning Wisconsin fans missed a chunk of the game because the basketball ran late. Some local Wisconsin TV stations sought permission to air the broadcast themselves and got it, but that did not cover the entire state. The Big Ten looked like utter morons in that one and made themselves look dumber than ESPN in the process.

I remember how bad the Wildcats were at the time, as I lived in Manhattan, Kansas from 1988 to 1990. I was very young and had no interest in sports at the time, but still went to the 1988 game against Iowa State, as my family got free tickets to it through my mom's friend from work, who was married to one of the team's starting defensive linemen, Bobby Lawrence. It was the first football game I had ever been to, and I generally enjoyed the experience despite my disinterest in sports (or possibly because of that disinterest, as the Wildcats lost, as they always did that season). My main memories from the game were looking down at the players running around on the field and of getting my mom's permission to run around in the empty bleachers above where we were sitting. There were a lot of empty bleachers to run around in, as the stadium was the same as usual in those times: 3/4 empty and at least half of the few who DID show up were fans of the visiting team. The next season, when Snyder took over, Bobby Lawrence quit the team in disgust that Snyder was "crazy" enough to think the team could ever win and required the players to dedicate the time and effort to actually try it.

I also watched a 17-17 tie with Kansas in what is, to this day, the worst game I have ever seen in person. K-State finished that year 0-10-1 and Kansas finished the year 1-9-1.

And now as a student i get to witness Kliemen and this new team, I get to see Felix and Deuce get drafted next year, I got to see Skylar Thompson ball out in preseason as a 7th rounder and then actually start an NFL game his rookie year. Now we had a historical shutout against a great OSU team, and we're number 13 in the country. While Nebraska won the game by two scores, that was more due to the offense (some true freshman QB named Tommie Frazier ran for 4 TDs) than the defense, as K-State got a respectable 24 points, even though they were playing with their backup QB.

As an anime fan and a K-State fan, I can tell you no, they don't hate anime. But k-state football fans barely remember this issue, why because we care more for Bill Snyder, that man brought back glory to K-State Football and has made us a team worth playing since the 1989 season.

This made me do some research, and another story with American CFB and Japan... In 2015, Princeton played a JAPANESE COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM IN FUCKING JAPAN. Princeton blew them out ofc.

Geez and Princeton would get blown out by most FBS teams so no telling how many points a real power 5 team would hang on Japanese teams lol

@@kennypowers1945 It reminds me of reading about times when the US has competed in football against the national teams of a few other countries who had them. Even being restricted to not having anyone on the US team who had ever played in the NFL or CFL (which meant the roster was made up of recent former college players who didn't make the cut for either league and would likely have lost to any major college team) the US teams won every game by insane margins. The lack of interest in American football in most other countries (except Canada) means that they simply don't have a big enough pool of interested athletes to be competitive with even a low-level American team.

On one hand I'd love to sympathize with the Wildcats on this one. On the other hand I am a bitter OSU Cowboy who is not salty about the Saturday night result. Needless to say I am perfectly okay with what happened here. OU gets screwed due to cheating and KSU gets screwed because they suck. No the 48 point shutout is not influencing my opinion

I really love the type of videos you make, but it feels like they are all stretched out to be like 15 minutes long. So much repetition of the same points and forced analogies. I want to be able to binge these videos, but it’s hard to do that when they all feel twice as long as they need to be.

Yeah, I've been reliably informed that Kansas State was the worst program ever from the beginning of time up until like, 1994 (barring a year or two with Lynn Dickey)
@DamonNomad82
@DamonNomad82 Жыл бұрын
The Wildcats actually had mostly good teams for the first 35 years of the 20th Century, and mid-level teams in the late 1930s before they collapsed in the early 1940s from a combination of internal squabbling within the coaching staff and the entry of the US into World War 2. After that, they were beyond awful for about 50 years, with their only winning seasons being a brief turnaround in 1953 and 54 (which the university squandered by refusing a pay raise for the assistant coaches, leading that head coach to leave and sending the program right back into its death spiral) 1970 (when Lynn Dickey was the starting QB and they managed a 6-5 season) and 1982, when a gambit by the head coach to redshirt ALL players on the roster who had a redshirt year available in 1981 paid off enough to get the Cats a 6-4-1 record and their first bowl game (a loss to Wisconsin). From the 1950s until 1996, K-State was the all-time losingest Division 1-A football team, a distinction they finally got rid of thanks to Snyder's consistent winning teams. Fittingly, the victory that moved the Wildcats out of the all-time losingest team happened against in-state archrival KU.

I didn't go to K-State but I'm somewhat of a fan indirectly through a relative of mine and we've talked about this before. We both agree they had no business making a fuss about this and they were lucky to even be invited to play. Trying to bitch about it was not a good look at all. I guess I don't blame them for trying though because money.
