To end the 1999 NFL season, the Buffalo Bills played the Indianapolis Colts. And even though the Bills won, and even though wide receiver Andre Reed moved into second place all-time in career receptions, surpassing Art Monk and only trailing Jerry Rice, he was furious at the Bills for how he broke the record, and lashed out at the team for the display. This is the story behind the bizarre ending to the career of the greatest receiver in Bills history

When Eric Moulds is saying Reed should be involved more, that says a lot about this situation. Even the year before, when Moulds was a Pro Bowler, Reed's stats were still respectable- 63 catches, 795 yards, 5 touchdowns- so it's not like he was being fazed out THAT much in 1998.

Reed lost a step in 1998, but was still effective. It look liked he lost another step in 1999. He was a solid 13.0+ Yds per reception. It dropped to 10.3 in 1999. Moulds had a monster season in 1998 and made a mistake relying on him too much in 1999 and forgetting the capable Reed.

I’ve been a Dolphin’s fan since 1983. The Buffalo teams of the late 80’s through 1995 were great teams. Reed absolutely killed us!! He was a great route runner, super tough, and could run after the catch like J. Rice. He’s one of the best to ever do it. It’s a shame how Buffalo treated him at the end of his career.

Dude. Your comment is the best one on here I’m a Raider born and bred. I hate LaDanian Tomlinson. I HATE Elway. Seau. Gonzalez. And I hate them all for the same reason you hate Reed. It is because of Reed’s HOF career that you appreciate and honor the enemy. No greater honor can be given to a player than props from the enemy.
@Metalbass10000
@Metalbass10000 2 жыл бұрын
They could have treated him far worse. A team that's winning enough to be a playoff contender (despite the QB situation), but he's focused on himself, his numbers, his treatment by the team. After meaningful team wins, he's publicly complaining about his role, his numbers, and in the post-game Q and A he's criticizing his coaches based on how THEY are doing THEIR jobs (that rarely is a good idea). In the final week they specifically call plays to get him #2 all time and then they can get back to the game plan. That game plan isn't constructed based on puckering up for anyone's ass. Did he think the coaches were trying to be unsuccessful, trying to lose, trying to put players into the worst possible position? Coaches watch film, and if a player IS a deep threat they WILL run that player on deep routes. Doing otherwise gets them fired. So, were these the ONLY plays Reed was on the field? Did he run other routes throughout the rest of the game? Did he get open? Was the ball just never thrown to the wide open Reed? Why? Reed was a great WR, but not always a great teammate, and was NOT the equal of Jerry Rice. Couldn't make the Broncos? Barely produced with Washington? Maybe there was a reason his role was changing? Maybe check your massive and fragile ego at the door and do the best you can in whatever role you get, as it's not an entitlement to play the game. Maybe? Maybe be more concerned with wins and losses than YOUR numbers, and maybe there's not a big 0 for 4 in super Bowls. Maybe? Just a thought. I don't actually care one way or the other. It's a shame how Buffalo made sure to get him past Art Monk, while winning the game. It's a shame how Reed wasn't grateful for a damned thing. Did he thank the QB, the O-line, the defense, or even think of anyone other than himself? Yeah, it was cheap how you got those catches, so why didn't you catch post routes, deep dig routes, slant routes, or dialing number 9? Ask the coaches. They DO watch film.

@@Metalbass10000 totally agree with all that you have written - Andre was quite a bit into himself and not the Bills as a team - The Bills got him into to the Football Hall of Fame, the Bills also put him name on their stadium ring/wall of fame, the Bills paid him well, and if Andre was so unhappy with the Bills why did he keep signing contracts worth big dollars. If not mistaken Andre lives in Western New York so if he hated being with the Bills why would he elect to live here. It is often said that the bigger you are the bigger you want to be - that was/is Andre. Also, if not mistaken Andre left the Bills the Bills did not leave him. Cry your eyes out and then wipe your tears Andre - you made a name for yourself in Buffalo and after every game didn't Jim Kelly invite the entire team over to his house even if the Bills did not win the game. Andre was treated like a King in Buffalo country - he was a damn good player but lets all be honest - he did slacken off in his last two years with the Bills. I have the capability to watch the Bills games from the Andre Reed years and he was good but so was the entire team - remember the word team is not the word I - sorry Andre but the truth is the truth and it doesn't matter if you believe or not but you were honored by the Bills and if it weren't for the Bills and the whole Buffalo Bills team you would never have gotten into the Football Hall of Fame. I end with this @Metalbass10000 this person agrees with what you wrote about Andre and to Andre I end with this thought - insert foot in mouth and be thankful the Buffalo Bills Team got you the success you have had in the past and weren't you on the only team in NFL history to play in four straight Super Bowl games - that say it wasn't I it was Team. And to JaguarGator9 how much do you really know about Andre Reed and his relationship with the players, coaches, management of the Buffalo Bills - not just what the mind of a person who thinks he was mistreated thinks and believe but what the others who made him famous think and believe. To be honest with you I didn't play your video - I know for a fact that Andre wanted more than just a piece of the pie he wanted the entire pie and he was jealous of other players on the team because they were getting as much attention as he was getting and jealousy always kills.

Terance Mathis set the record for most receptions in college in New Mexico via an underhand screen behind the line of scrimmage. As for Reed he limped to the finish line in terms of his Bills career. I wonder if this played a role in his Hall of Fame induction being delayed.

Perhaps. But there was a glut of receivers all eligible at the same time; Rice, Irvin, Tim Brown, Reed. Also, there was a lot of talk about how the passing rules had changed and were they just benificiaries of new rules rather than extremely talented.

I'll say this with my graduate degree from Kutztown -- and having been there for the ceremony when we renamed our football stadium after Andre Reed -- but the Bills did NOT have the best QB-WR-RB combo ever. Heck, not even the best one of their time. I think my Triplets took care of that claim of the biggest stage of all. Twice. ;)

@@matthewdaley746 You're right in saying nothing is owed to you, but if I had a storied career like that, I'd want my team to do everything they can to go out on top or exceed expectations. (At least run a route over the top or over the middle instead of this WR screen stuff. I would have). How many HOF players across many sports didn't retire the way they wanted because their team didn't care? I agree to an extent the Bills didn't respect him.

You think the Super Bowl 51 comeback is better than the bills comeback in the 1992 wild card game? Why is a 25 point comeback better than a 32 point comeback? And not just a 32 point comeback, but a 32 point comeback in the days of no 2 point conversion. Brady could score 8 at a time, while the bills had kick the extra point every time

Look back at the game and see that obvious blatent bad call of the redskins reciever cLeaRLy only having one foot in and his second was waaay out the back of the endzone ..but ...didnt matter to them ... they were going to force a redskin `win`that day. How many catches does Mr. Reed think Art Monk made that were similar to the 5 he made to break Monk's record??? I'm guessing.....many! Also, Andre apparently wasn't thinking of the previous 936 catches he actually earned. The Buffalo Bills gave him that opportunity and they ensured that he got that record due to it being his last "stat counting" game possibly. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the OC didn't want to be the guy calling normal route tree plays and being the reason Reed fell short. Who wants to be that guy?
