I'm an old rugby player who was very good at defending for what would be like NBA G-league/NFL practice squad equivalent level as well advising on analytics for the NFL equivalent guys. Here's some points for young players or those interested. By the 10:18 mark by my count, 76 of 88 tackles missed where of a direct result of poor head positioning. The criteria for a miss tackle was approach proximity, engage and release I.e was near enough to influence, physical striking distance to make a tackle, physical contact made and ineffective or negative influence on the tackle. So if someone just getting burned to the outside or trying to react to another players mistake are weighed. So what do I mean by head positioning and a quick rugby interlude. In football, the helmet allows for otherwise dangerous players in other sports and rule changes over the years reflect this aka targeting calls etc. In contact sports like rugby where head protection is comparatively minimal the basic tackle technique differs. The head aims to always be to the outside as knees to the head and shoulder contact and hand offs (stiff arms) to the bare head are fair game and your fault if you get hurt. Game wise, using the helmet makes sense in football to dislodge and create higher impact collisions (a note on trucking tips later and how smaller players do it). Naturally by putting your head across the body you limit visibility on where you are looking to strike but for the purpose if a juke video it's about the angle. Here is the science. Elite players are able to consistently juke to around 45 degrees without sacrificing speed via gps study. The optimal way to close down to tackle is also 45 degrees. Gameplay rarely provide perfect scenarios so elite tacklers deploy measures to reduce options rather than always head hunting, something you can see repeatedly. A great defender does not always need to make a tackle to tackle someone. Pushing someone outside and no angle inside gives you the benefit of two touch lines to act as extra defenders, ths best are able to shift seemingly headlong tackles as close to a 45 degree entry as possible through foot movement, this gives the ball carrier a false choice, a leg chop or an inside shoulder. By going away from us we have an easy side tackle done in your sleep, because of the head position to the outside in the event of a ball carried trying to juke inside that will move 45 degrees inward and take a full deads centre at an unfavourable position. Now if you rewatch the video at any part, notice the angle taken by the football tackle, it's closer to a 55 degree angle and thus easy pickings for any elite ball carrier. This is why you get multiple jukes to the inside on plays as defenders coming across naturally put the head across the body and give to much and angle, where the defender will flail arms outwards on the over shoot. This is way too much of a 50/50 situation for any defence and why it's so important. As a trail runner arriving late, in rugby I know that the outside defender like a dub is not going to let him be able to cut inside at speed, hes going to push him out, therefore I know that even if the outside tackle is not successful, I know exactly where he is going to be. At this point you can say that blockers are around but from an elite tackler that's more ammunition as the worst thing you want to see is open space and angles. If the inside 45 line us covered by the first man, I know the next highest field position player is going to cover long to do the same where space will all but be gone and crisis averted. The only over option is what we would call an underfold and is sometimes done (with lessened results due to tackle teaching) to cover cuts back across field. In rugby as the defence slides to cover, with no where left to run a player has to do one thing and that is slow down this is where that little trucking tip comes in, often you will see trucks where the ball carrier will slow and and shift angles in contact to flip the advantageous angle (something that resembles what I described early in elite defenders). If you divide the body into sections of momentum and target you will see what I mean as trucking a third of someone's weight with the majority of yours allows smaller players to break tackles with targeted force and leg drive but that's a whole other rambling comment. By adjusting speed thd ball carrier attempts to widen the angle of which they can joke, this is why stationary sharp spin moves are so effective against football tacklers but it's very rare in pro rugby. The underfold in combination with proper angle discipline facilitates very nasty blindside hits that you especially see in rugby league. The best anecdote I could come up with tackling is treat it like blackjack. You can be a player, reacting to cards on the draw or you can be the dealer and know exactly what you need to draw to win. Reduce the options of attackers with clever positioning and I promise you, your pksy and those around you will improve.

@@Goatgokagewrld Your missing my point, I think. Other players are, and rightfully so, "afraid" to tackle QB's due to the amount of penalties and fines received. So in my un-football-educated opinion, lot's of quarterbacks (lamar jackson not included) "breaking ankles" is more of whoever is going to tackle them not wanting a penalty or a fine than the quarterback actually making a good move. Some do,
@JamessCarlos9 ай бұрын
@@notans1krr46Bro you just trying to discredit Mobile QBs? "They're gonna get fined if they hit QB" helmet to helmet or above the shoulders is a penalty and fines. If the defenders miss the tackle it's because they're ankles were broken. Not because they're "scared" of a fine. Your educated guess is wrong. On defense linebackers and Guards are looking to hit the QB. Depends on how you hit the QB. But do not discredit there skills. Seems your underestimating these Athletes. Half these QBs not even Mobile QBs would snap your ankles. Even the guards. So just enjoy the sport and try not to be a professional sport analysis
