Prior to the start of the 1980 NFL season, Denver Broncos kicker Jim Turner was showing no signs of slowing down, as the 2nd leading kicker in NFL history from a field goals made standpoint was going to be Denver's starting kicker for the brand-new season. However, the Denver Broncos let him go in what had to be the strangest of ways possible, to the point where they absolutely screwed him over for no good reason at all

Thank you for giving Jim Turner a proper send off. I’d forgotten those front office shenanigans the Broncos put him through. I still vividly remember when he scored a receiving touchdown on a fake field goal against the Raiders in the Broncos ‘77 season. To see him chugging down field in those high tops is etched forever in my memory.

Fun fact: Fred Gehrke actually designed and painted the first ever NFL logo when he put horns on the Rams helmet in 1948. Yes, this was his idea. Until then, no NFL team had helmet logos. Gehrke also designed the first ever facemask. He did all this while still playing BTW.

Fantastic video! Jim Turner played on two of my favorite teams, the 1968 N.Y. Jets and the 1977 Denver Broncos. I never saw him play with the Jets but saw him on TV plenty of times during his years in Denver. I consider these to be his top three field goals as a Bronco: 12/24/77 - With 7:17 to play Turner drills a 44 yard field goal to give Denver a 24-21 lead over Pittsburgh in the Broncos first ever playoff appearance. These points were critical and provided Denver with momentum to finish off the Steelers in the 4th quarter. 10/22/73 - Turner kicks a 35 yard field goal with seven seconds left to tie Oakland 23-23. It was Denver's first appearance on ABC's Monday Night Football. 10/19/75 - Turner kicks a career high 53 yard field goal on the final play of the game to beat Cleveland 16-15. Jim Turner's last game was on August 16, 1980, a pre-season match-up at the Medowlands versus the N.Y. Giants. Turner did not attempt a field goal but had an extra point blocked. The Broncos released him the following week. I remember listening to KOA sports talk the day he was released and many fans were not happy. I had totally forgotten about all the drama that played out afterward. R.I.P. Reliable Jim Turner 🏈

WOW!! H. JONES was from my now late Dad's hometown= PITTSBURG, TX.(NO H IN PITT.).. JONES went to pre-integration high school FREDERICK DOUGLASS..his mom was a schoolteacher there and his dad worked for LONE STAR STEEL located in the community of LONE STAR east of PITT. HOMER JONES played college football at HBCU=TEXAS SOUTHERN U. in Houston..The AFL HOU. Oilers drafted him, then watched him hurt his knee in camp before cutting him. The NFL NY GIANTS who also drafted him picked him up, and the rest is history. They paid his knee surgery bill. ONE MORE THING.. H. JONES was the very first NFL player to... SPIKE A FOOTBALL after he scored a TDOWN.. He said he did not want to emulate GB PACKERS- PAUL HORNUNG OR JIM TAYLOR, or EVEN his ex-teamate FRANK GIFFORD OF NYG, and throw the ball in the stands, so he found, he said, a "safer way" to celebrate a TD.. The NFL started fining players for throwing the ball in the stands in '65, THE YEAR OF THE FIRST JONES SPIKE of which he almost threw the ball in ..the stands, but stopped himself, WITH A fine-free SPIKE. That 89 yd catch was the longest of the 1965-66 NFL SEASON.. HOMER JONES died of lung cancer at 82..the same age as JIM TURNER.. R.I.P., Number 45..85 with the BROWNS, his last team.. OH, he is the NFL record holder for average yds. per catch lifetime with at least 200 career regular season catches= 22.3 yds per reception. In 1967 he averaged over 24 yds a reception on 49 catches= over 1200 yds in recs. and led the NFL IN TD CATCHES AND COMBINED TDs RUSHING and RECEIVING= 14 (1 RUSHING).. RIP..

Thank god the fans didn't show the lack of respect the state of the organization was in at that time did to Turner. It was the same year Red Miller salivated over Matt Robinson to play QB despite Craig Morton still playing heads and tails better and the wasted offensive talent that alternated at RB and WR in that system. 1980...a year that left a bad taste in a lot of Bronco fans mouths.

@@stuartdollar9912 What I find amazing is just how unwise so many attempts were in those days. You had the line of scrimmage spot on missed field goals then that wasn't as punishing as spot of kick, which makes longer tries more worthwhile. However, you had the goalpost at the goal line for most of Turner's career, so on a missed 40 yard kick, do the field position on missed kick is 3 up ards worse for the kicking team. With how even the best kickers were so bad at anything over 35-40 yards, it is amazing how many coaches in those conservative days were comfortable with rolling the dice.
@stuartdollar9912
@stuartdollar9912 Жыл бұрын
@@pullt Actually, you didn't have the line of scrimmage spot until the 1974 season. Prior to that, missed field goals from the line of scrimmage that were longer than 20 resulted in the opposing team getting the ball on their own 20. Which was even less punishing.
