I think it was a faceless man of bravos that assassinated Maegor. Or someone else. The king was a warrior in his red keep with 4000 men and Balerion. He was more likely to want to die sword in hand. Besides his wife and mother were sorceresses he could have poisoned himself painlessly if he wanted.

He was 100% assassinated, by who, there are so many people that wanted him dead. Faceless men are a good bet, maybe there simply was a double agent. But the fact he was alone surrounded by so many people suggests other wise. Two ideas i read about recently are that Rhanea poisoned him overtime, but for me it does not match how he died very well. Another that Tyanna and Visenya used black magic to keep him alive after he was almost killed, and with them gone his life force weakened and he killed himself, again does not wholly work for me. I love the fact it a mystery and there are so many cool ideas. I also see a lot of Stannis parallels so maybe that's a factor.

Do you think Tyanna actually did commit treason? I think she just confessed cuz she knew the King was going to torture her ether way. Also what about that kingsguard that mysteriously died?

It's hard to say with Tyanna, she sort of had a motive but at the same time she put a lot of effort into making Maegor the king he was so it's odd she would turn cloak. The first time i read the book i kind of read it as her knowing she was doomed and wanting to piss Maegor off as much as she could before she died, kinda like Olenna Tyrell in the show. In the case king's guard it is very odd, and does back up the idea that maybe someone was trying to take a Maegor for a while.

Why wouldn't Meagor keep the twins togather and under his watchful eye? Theres a good chance some lord could steal and marry Rhaella or the faith use her as a call to arms icon. Or keep her atound and when he had a son emulate his father and had his son marry both twins to cement his claim. Or just to keep her mother in line, harder to escape with two childern All in all it seems very dumb to get rid of a valuable hostage that could be used later on

There is 100% a case for history being written by the victors when it comes to how maegor is portrayed. Yes he did have his negative traits, but everyone seemingly forgets the good he did.

I mean taking the throne from your 17 and 15 year old nephews and killing him does not seem like a sane man. Nor does a sane man kill all of the men that helped build his home. He was as effective as his brother at the end of the day. Of course, him having his skull almost cracked open and being "dead" for 28 days only to be revived by magic doesn't help with sanity
