I saw this movie in the theatre when I was SIX. My mom doesn't remember taking me, but I sure as hell remember! I wasn't scared by it, I actually found it compelling and certain scenes stuck with me. I was fascinated by many things in the film, but with respect to the Army of the Dead, it was the gruesome idea that the Horned King had gathered up all the dead from his - presumably lost - battles and piled them in a huge room, awaiting a time centuries in the future when they would be reborn and he would become powerful again. The Black Cauldron was in fact my introduction to the fantasy genre, an addiction that I have been stuck with for 35 years now XD

this scene shows the problem with the movie. This feels like 2 different crews are making it. One crew wants to make a gorgeously animated, dark, gothic story while the other team wants a funny comedy. these dont mix well. The Horned King, the cauldron, and the undead skeletons all deserve a better movie with better heroes.
@nicolascharron10385 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Admittedly, the Horned King was such a great Villain! But yeah, this was an odd one for me. Honestly, it should have been straight up dark all the way. Disney for adults.
@iRinnda5 жыл бұрын
I know it's made by Disney, and I believe it was the late Mr. Walt Disney's motto of sorts to "not to create movies deliberately for children, but for children in all of us." Sure The Black Cauldron is clearly one of the darkest movies Disney has even made, but there are many other dark themed movies nowadays which also entertain even little kids. Harry Potter is one to name from top of my head. I think today it's obvious many people despite their age enjoy animation as a form of art. That being said, I'd say Disney would do well to also create movies which are mainly targeted for children 12+ and more adult audience. It doesn't even have to be some superduperextravaganza budget movie like Frozen. Let's just say if they set the budget that the Black Cauldron originally had and made a bit darker movie for adults, I have a feeling it would turn out to be a success now. Would it be the next "the most profitable movie ever made?" No, but there would still be profit to be made.

@@seanjenkins2188 It might be a hold over from the _original_ animation of the skeletons. Notice how clunky and sudden the edit/music drops when it cuts to Eilonwy.. and _then_ you see the rest of the skeleton warriors, but without eyes (which could have been a Katzenberg demand, as he was the one who forced the editing of all scenes that were considered too violent for a Disney film).
