Let’s not forget about Susan Sheridan, Freddie Jones, Nigel Hawthorne, Arthur Malet, Eda Reiss Merin, Adele Malis-Morey, Wayne Allwine, Candy Candido and John Huston (the voices of Princess Eilonwy, Dallben, Fflewddur Fflam, King Eidilleg, Orddu, Orwen, one of the Horned King’s guards and the narrator). They passed away as well.

I saw this movie in the theatre when I was SIX. My mom doesn't remember taking me, but I sure as hell remember! I wasn't scared by it, I actually found it compelling and certain scenes stuck with me. I was fascinated by many things in the film, but with respect to the Army of the Dead, it was the gruesome idea that the Horned King had gathered up all the dead from his - presumably lost - battles and piled them in a huge room, awaiting a time centuries in the future when they would be reborn and he would become powerful again. The Black Cauldron was in fact my introduction to the fantasy genre, an addiction that I have been stuck with for 35 years now XD

this scene shows the problem with the movie. This feels like 2 different crews are making it. One crew wants to make a gorgeously animated, dark, gothic story while the other team wants a funny comedy. these dont mix well. The Horned King, the cauldron, and the undead skeletons all deserve a better movie with better heroes.
@nicolascharron1038

Agreed. Admittedly, the Horned King was such a great Villain! But yeah, this was an odd one for me. Honestly, it should have been straight up dark all the way. Disney for adults.
@iRinnda
@iRinnda 5 жыл бұрын
I know it's made by Disney, and I believe it was the late Mr. Walt Disney's motto of sorts to "not to create movies deliberately for children, but for children in all of us." Sure The Black Cauldron is clearly one of the darkest movies Disney has even made, but there are many other dark themed movies nowadays which also entertain even little kids. Harry Potter is one to name from top of my head. I think today it's obvious many people despite their age enjoy animation as a form of art. That being said, I'd say Disney would do well to also create movies which are mainly targeted for children 12+ and more adult audience. It doesn't even have to be some superduperextravaganza budget movie like Frozen. Let's just say if they set the budget that the Black Cauldron originally had and made a bit darker movie for adults, I have a feeling it would turn out to be a success now. Would it be the next "the most profitable movie ever made?" No, but there would still be profit to be made.

Despite it's flaws, I still adored this movie as a kid, not much of the fantasy genre from disney hit it like the black cauldron did, I never minded the comical goofyness mixed with the dark gloomy tones. it's had potential and it was the type of fantasy I was into. I think the closest children movie I liked that gave me almost similar feeling to this and (from a story writing standpoint) done it successfully is Coraline.

This movie wasn't scare at me but i didn't scare when the Skeletron attacked the men of Horned King transformed them into the deads men. I fell in love with Taran. My mom give me this movie in VHS with Little Mermaid 2 and Pocahontas 2 when i was three :D. It's was a First sign of love being one of my favorite Disney movies with 101 Dalmatians, Oliver and Company, Dinosaurs and Chicken Little :D

It is very noticeable in their similar appearances, both wear robes, both have empty eye sockets with luminous pupils, both are undead sorcerers (lich) and both have horns.

At 2:02, notice how the whole castle rat population are fleeing the castle and swimming in the moat? They can sense the indomitable dark magic and malevolent powers of the Black Cauldron being activated and they instinctively were fleeing for their lives to be away from it. At least animals have more common sense to flee from dark and dangerous magical objects and twisted and malicious magic than humans who are power-hungry, toxicity of desire for power and lacking self-preservation until they don’t have any more control when something goes wrong.

Animation error.
@TheRealNormanBates
@TheRealNormanBates 5 жыл бұрын
@@seanjenkins2188 It might be a hold over from the _original_ animation of the skeletons. I know there was a LOT of "shenanigans" when it came to the final edit, and that particular scene at 2:25 might be an original unedited sequence, as it immediately led to the men that were jumped to dissolve and become skeletal warriors (with eyes) themselves. Notice how clunky and sudden the edit/music drops when it cuts to Eilonwy.. and _then_ you see the rest of the skeleton warriors, but without eyes (which could have been a Katzenberg demand, as he was the one who forced the editing of all scenes that were considered too violent for a Disney film).
@Double-R-Nothing
@Double-R-Nothing 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealNormanBates Actually, it was the other way around. The shot of the skeletons jumping the 2 guys was the reanimated one. Notice how it cuts from a skeleton lunging at the camera to a medium shot with no flow between cuts? I think that's where we were to see one of the thugs get their throat slashed and the other one dissolved.
