I love the Black Crowes. Always have. Was a fan from 1989/90 when SYMM came out and have remained a fan all these years later. I have seen them more time in the last 35yrs than any other individual music act and am proud for that to be true. Their music is obviously the biggest reason I am a fan but also I share a lifespan with Chris (he’s a month older than me) and his band mates are all around the same age as me. So the evolution of life and life’s experiences in terms of going from a boy to a man to a grown up is similar for those guys over the last 35 yrs as it is for me. Certainly there have been some head scratching moments for the band and the Robinsons overall over the yrs but thats true for everyone. What makes me happy now is seeing the grown up Chris laugh at himself and take whatever happened in his band and life in stride and still have that fire burning that helped create all that great music. IMO he is the last great R&R front man, born of the mold of Mick, Rod and a few others and one day I hope he and the Crowes get their much deserved appreciation for their contributions to the history of R&R with a HOF induction. Keep rockin gents!

It's so weird looking back, the way promoters always lumped hard rock and metal bands together as if it was all the same. I know a lot of metalheads really resented that back in the day, and resented some of the "hair metal" stereotypes being generalized onto them too. Plus, Metallica was absolutely gigantic in the early 90s, so that probably didn't help in this instance. Sorry, Black Crowes.

Metal heads are the most close minded fans on the planet. Thats why they all become conservatives.
@OpheliaDarkling
@OpheliaDarkling 2 ай бұрын
@@colonialstraits1069 Sweeping Generalizations much? With a statement like that, you fit the bill of the ignorant promoters the OP is describing. Scott Ian from Anthrax, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, Rob Halford from Judas Priest and the late great Lemmy Kilmister are just 4 examples of how wrong you are. And you can't make good music unless you listen to all types of music which metal musicians do. Unfortunately, beer guzzling toxic male masculinity had a platform in the 80's and 90's and it was a portion of the audience. James Hetfield led the charge in that mindset but he learned his lesson and grew tf up. Sobriety and family helped him humble himself and wise up. Sounds like you need to as well. There are boneheads in every genre but saying one is "the most (enter negative comment)" is a logical fallacy.
@greybrother01
@greybrother01 2 ай бұрын
@@colonialstraits1069 I find that people who don't like metal often don't know much about it and resort to stereotyping. Metal has become one of the most diverse musical forms, crossing over with everything from punk to classical, folk to jazz, and there's currently an explicitly anti fascist/bigotry movement going on in metal to counter this obnoxiously visible "conservative drift" that actually seems to be going on everywhere. Metal is more culturally diverse now than it's ever been as well with the gatekeeping influence of the mainstream music industry out of the way. (Same influence that gradually crowded black folks out of rock music through the 60s even though they Invented it.) Sadly, that also means since metal's been abandoned by the mainstream, a lot of people's impression of it is trapped in the 80/90s era.
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin 2 ай бұрын
That was Metallica’s management, when they were becoming mainstream. They had just become a big band, though likely opening for Aerosmith in 1990. Black Crowes and Aerosmith, aren’t even Hard Rock. Aerosmith had some songs that are arguably, but the Crowes were a straight R&B type rock band, with influences from all over the 70’s. They would’ve been seen as hippies. Whose idea was it to put the GnR and Metallica co headliner shows together? _That_ was a true idiotic decision.
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin 2 ай бұрын
Metallica was giant, until after The Black Album. The Black Crowes were headlining festivals in 1991, and headlining their own tour. I’d bet it was a three band show, Black Crowes, Metallica and then Aerosmith heading. They were much bigger than Metallica, even after Metallica had the Black Album. They were competing tours, after that, but Aerosmith had their comeback, in the late 80’s, through the 90’s.

My Metallica fan moment was when Fred Durst decided it was a good idea to question the crowd's sexuality with zero provocation. He was pelted with trash for two songs before storming off the stage. James Hetfield was thanking the opening acts later in the show (it was an all day outdoor show) and still included Limp Bizkit. You can imagine the response.

You have to wonder how a collection of bands (or just an opening band) are chosen to play together? What are they thinking about when the fans of one band are going to obviously dislike the music of another during a performance? I am truly asking, it doesn't make sense to me. I suppose too that a music artist or group that's big enough requires no opening act at all, so in the case of Metallica here say, they just weren't big enough to be able to play their own show?
@tjm6983
@tjm6983 2 ай бұрын
In the type of case they described, back then it may have been arranged by their record company or whomever else on the business side. But bands/artists are often able to choose their own opening acts. Usually its ones the headliner(s) like(s). Sometimes they do 'co-headline' tours and I'm certain the bands must agree to them first. Being able to perform without an opening act doesn't just apply to the most lucrative and successful acts, but it's more a sign of bands with somewhat smaller but very devoted, cult like fan bases. Most of the biggest acts and most acts in general do use opening acts. Some do most of the time but play alone on occasion. Very few perform that way all the time, and it's not the biggest acts in the world that do, but still very successful professional musicians/artists though
