According to The Band's Robbie Robertson, he wrote this song while he was staying at Levon Helm's parents house in Arkansas. Robbie has stated in numerous interviews and books over the decades that Levon's father, Nell Helm was a very proud Southerner who told him many stories about his life growing up on a cotton farm as well as stories about the lives of his ancestors. Nell Helm proudly said to Robbie one day, "You know what Robbie? The South *will* rise again someday." Robbie then took all of Nell's stories, emotions and feelings of Southern pride and wrote this song. This was Robbie's tribute to the South and all the many proud Southern men and women who thought & felt exactly like Nell Helm did.

Marilyn Nixon What's ironic is you are being racist towards a Southerner for being from the South because of it's racist past. And it's such a double standard. See people as individuals, and judge those individuals on their individual character, period. Greetings from Alabama.
@marilynnixon591310 жыл бұрын
Carlo Von Sexron what's even more ironic is I can mock dixie for being stupid only to have it defended by people who don't even know what the word racist means. You'd have been better off with jingoistic. My family is from Alabama, so I know first hand how terrible the concept of dixie is. Greetings from a reformed Texan.

I pray that in cleaning up history they don't sweep everything under the carpet. Song's like this are historical about a time in our collective history. If we whitewash away history we have a chance of repeating it again and again. Don't let banning this song be the Second time that they Drove Old Dixie Down. Great version of The Band's classic song. Peace be with you All, don't forget your past or it will come back to hit you in the Face. ✌❤🎸🎶🙏 KEH 🇨🇦

I'm a huge fan of classic rock, for me Chris Robinson is one of the few singers who still sings with a ton of soul. This one's beautiful! Also if you've seen the footage of Jimmy Page with the Crowes, he does the old Zep stuff better than any active singer today! Levon Helm still rules, but if the Band isn't around, the Crowes deserve this shot! especially when its that good.

Well, in defense of the Crowes, I was at this show (Fillmore in SF) and they had just literally played like a 3 hour set. Might explain the 'lackluster' energy into the song. This was a fantastic cover. I played this and the clip from "The Last Waltz" back and forth. The two versions certainly are incredible in their own way and there was definitely much more emotion with the Band's version, but I feel the Crowes did a great job in adding their own stamp on it without losing anything felt from The Band's version.

This is just incrediable. The emotion and soul that is poured into this. I'm sorry, but only a southerner can really nail this song. A Canadian may have written it, but an Arkansan put the soul in it. Baez sings a nice easy to listen to song, but crap people she didn't even get the words right. She just liked the tune and had no idea of the emotion and the feelings evoked by the tune. I for one had a great uncle who "was just 18, proud and brave, but a yankee laid him in his grave."

Our ancestors fought for the Constitution and the rule of law. The North wanted to control the Union government and use the South was their storehouse of raw materials and piggy bank. *WHY?* The Confederate States of America (1861-1865) started with an agrarian-based economy that relied heavily on slave-worked plantations for the production of cotton for export to Europe If classed as an independent country, the area of the Confederate States would have ranked as the *FOURTH-RICHEST country of the world in 1860."* (Wikipedia: Economy of the Confederate States of America). Abraham Lincoln, 16th US President, five days after the evacuation of Ft Sumter: Lincoln's 19 April, 1861 Proclamation for Naval Blockades of Southern Ports: "Whereas an insurrection against the Government of the United States has broken out in the States of South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, and the laws of the United States for the *COLLECTION OF THE REVENUE* cannot be effectually executed therein comformably to that provision of the Constitution which requires *DUTIES (TAXES)* to be uniform throughout the United States:..." Lincoln's invasion of Dixie was about *LAND and MONEY*! Enhlish author Charles Dickens put it this way: English author, Charles Dickens, author of A Christmas Carol and Oliver Twist: "The Northern onslaught upon slavery was no more than a piece of specious humbug designed to conceal its desire for economic control (cotton and other raw materials) of the Southern states." (Google: Charles Dickens, piece of specious humbug). Dickens owned a magazine called All the Year Round. In it, an article attacked the tariff . “…under all the passion of the parties and the cries of battle lie the two chief moving causes of the struggle,” it said. “Union means so many millions a year lost to the South; secession means the loss of the same millions to the North. The love of money is the root of this, as of many other evils…”
