By the time you're dealing with pro this big, Big Bros seem more practical in terms of size and weight. The only advantages these monster cams have that I can think of are their ease/familiarity when placing the gear and the ability to bump the piece up as you go. Which means that one of each might make sense to an off-width aficionado while the majority of the rack is made up of Big Bros. Still, really glad to see that these weren't part of their April Fool's Day shenanigans.

^this is very true, I’m struggling to understand where a piece this size would be more useful than a big bro. Only thing could be the ability to constantly shuffle the cam up as you climb so you’re essentially top roping the route?

The video shows The Mayor, Dunn Lubbin, and Twin Cracks. But none of those would need a #8. Just left of Twin Cracks though is Goby Dick, a route that actually requires a #12 (or I guess #8). Usually when something requires a 12” cam, it’s pretty easy, but not that one!

Wish y'all could have done better with those strength ratings. I would rather sacrifice weight to get thicker lobes less probe to buckling. I mean Merlins are rated at 14kn and they don't even weigh much more than the last gen #6. Most of us wide fanatics seriously don't mind weight though.

Actually the Merlin is rated for 9kn I was wrong. He has gotten 14kn in a straight lab pull test (sling was what broke although he has updated to professional bar tacks from Fish since then). He does also caution about making sure placements are as good as possible to prevent buckling as well. I do think he makes the lobes a bit more robust than BDs and he has developed a special attachment to keep any loose movement on the axles to a minimum in an effort to minimize the chances of buckling.

@@rushthezeppelin So not actual UIAA 3-sigma rated to 14kn, or 9kn, or anything. I get those tests are expensive to do for a niche product, but it sure makes it hard to actually compare them against BD or a mainstream manufacturer. Or for us as consumers to evaluate whether they're really rated to 9/14kn or whatever Merlin or VG claims.
