I'm 52 years old, from Detroit. No body ever heard of this car before the media put it out there. The older guys in their 70's and 80's that raced on Woodward never heard of it. The same guy that said he'd never sell it sure had a change of heart after the media hyped it up.

I grew up in the speed shops and track, around racers and builders, had every car magazine I could get my hands on and not once did I ever hear of this car and trust me being around that crowd you hear all the stories about who's who's and what there running or what you think there running. Cool car and the original owner is the ultimate Hero badass but I think the son's street racing story is b.s. Big Willie Robinson is a legit street racing legend who drove a black Charger Daytona and was an Ultimate Badass Hero too. Maybe the inspiration behind the son's story.

Why? Something has no value until it is sold. I can’t imagine the father wanted him to just keep the car. The money the car brought to the family is worth more than a promise. The car was a stock Hemi Challenger with some Africa stickers on it. It looks like a decent survivor but not some mythical high value thing.

You're assuming he has a garage to keep it in. It depends on the guys living situation, if he has a good job owns a home, and is living a good life, he should keep it. If he's renting an apartment, it will really help him get ahead, he's better off with a house than a car he has to pay to store.

The biggest ripoff in classic car history. Look the original owner served his country in the Army and also as a Detroit Cop. He has my undying respect. But his car was a really nice box checked muscle car meant for him to cruise around town and join in with the guys. Now who’s going to argue that a 69 L88 with a reverse valve body and side pipes is going to lose to a 4100 lb car!! Sorry I can’t hear you!! That’s right because you know I am right!!!!

It appears this car was hyped-up quite a bit over the last few years. As a 'bone-stock' hemi challenger, I'm sure the original owner had fun (and perhaps did quite well), racing other bone-stock muscle cars of the time. But that's the only (class) it could have played in. Still, great story from back in the day, when street racing factory original muscle cars, on Friday and Saturday night, was the thing. I partook in this fun for the second wave, the 80's, when racing my '87 Grand National, another legendary black beauty - against Mustang GT's, Iroc Z's, Corvettes (and some first generation muscle cars) was the thing - then. Lots of fun.

How this got past all these "experts" in the modern age is priceless. There is going to be a ton of embarassed folks involved with this one. Plus the new owner may have a case against the auction house and owner when it comes to false advertising. If it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't...Lol! Then, given the circumstances could we also be looking at a case of stolen valor? Hopefully not Bc that is a very serious issue. You don't want to get on Don Shippley's radar.

So even though I was just a kid in the early 70's, and don't have any skin in the street racing history, even I have a hard time wrapping my head around the "legend" of this car. Doesn't add up. I just saw the lame speech the son gave before the bids started on this car. I still have my dads 2004 Chevy Colorado that now has 97k miles on it. Not quite a street racer, but it's a constant memory of my father. I guess some memories DO indeed have a price. Very sad.

This car is all hype and promotion. There is no way this Black ghost was competitive in in late 60's and 70's Detroit race scene-unless it was racing 6 cylinder mustangs and camaros. The red flags are everywhere-car has a trailer hitch on it (no street racer is going to add weight ), no headers on car. This is a bone stock 14 second boat anchor. The fact that Mecum and the announcers repeat the hype is disingenuous. This tells me that Mecum doesn't vet its cars. I wouldn't take anything for granted from Mecum after this car.

All the people salty about the car selling for $975k I hope y’all feel the same way about all the other restored & unrestored cars going for that price. Also you guys that keep mentioning it is a 14 second car, well duh did you see how skinny the tires were & limited traction those cars had back then. I hope the son can be prosperous w/ the money.

@@W4RY3NTRY Well you cant "rip off" a buyer at an auction other than falsifying or omitting information. Yes you could find a comp cheaper but someone bought its story. Poor economics, sure, a price I wouldnt pay but being "ripped off" implies a deception that isnt present in this sale.

For people who dont know....The Hemi was under rated on horse power and alot of them were low 11 sec cars stock! The 14 sec car was the 440 v8 not the Hemi. A 11 sec car at that time was insane! A copo camaro was running 12s with a 427 and still couldnt beat it! With 4.10 gears that Hemi was fast! This car is worth more then what it auctioned off for. Just being in the registry is a indcredible feat in its own right.
