Xuanzang set out in 629, not 1629.

Sun Wukong does not mean "Monkey King," but rather "awakened to emptiness" or "void." Evidenced by the boss Non-Void, whose name means the opposite

I think the word kong (空) in wukong's name is a buddhist concept, it's more like “the unchanging part of something, although things are ever changing” instead of simply meaning the void, though I don't fully understand it yet

Awesome analysis on Wukong! Super fair! Loved how you explained Game Science's consideration to use 'Wukong' and gave the character his real Chinese name. Also, the research you did into Buddhism and temples and the background of Journey to the west was really cool. About the Lingji head in British museum- it’s actually from a Guanyin statue since Lingji is fictional and he shouldn’t have his statue in real temple, but as a Chinese gamer it’s great to see that people care about our millions of lost cultural artifacts since the Opium war! BTW love those music! Especially the celestial symphony - brought back so many memories of watching JTTW during childhood! Looking forward to your next video!❤

I think the old monkey is actually either Guanyin or tang sanzang (the monk from journey to the west). Remember that in the journey of the west, only two people could put the head band on Wukong and control it, Guanyin (the goddess that first gave it to him) and Tang Sanzang.

I'm sad most people forgot about the dragon prince. While he really did not get that much air time but hey, he was still the "White" disciple, as opposed to "Non-White" boss.

Great job explaining the theory. Things make a lot more sense now with the story

Your depth into Chinese culture and mythology is very respectable! I like to make 2 points here. One I don't think the old monkey is either Wukong himself or JinChanZi(TangSanZang). Through the game you see the 2 are the most anti-establishment characters. One killed himself to break free from the golden band, the other believes firmly all beings should be equal and Buddhas should not live on the mortals, and paid heavy price for his belief. The old monkey looks much like part of the system to run a controlled opposition, the scheme known as "destined one". Two, there are 2 heavens. One is Taoist, the other is Buddhist. The journey to the west actually is a political struggle between the 2 factions, though they maintain peace and cooperation on the surface. Regarding LingJi, there seems to be plot within the plot. A pretty convincing theory says he himself is a victim, an outcast from LingShan, forced to set up the stages of yellow wind ridge to do the dirty work for LingShan. Here turning the kingdom into rats is just the small part. While using this to turn yellow wind sage against himself and LingShan and making an YaoGuai king for the destined one is the real job. Yes the rabbit hole is really deep.

BTW in some of our social media people comparing Shanxi province and British for fun, now we can still see videos talking about because they have similar size and shape😂 so it’s might be a sense of humor of Game science because the dialect lingji spoke, when he doesn’t have head is from north of Shanxi province- where Scotland has a similar geographical location within UK 😅😅😅 I would be more inclined to this guessing

I like the idea of the headless monk representing the british museum, but I do think what you said about the two accents representing the north and south of the chinese provinces is more likely. It would be funny though.

The British Museum never stole anything. First, because that's not something it can do as an institution, but that's pedantry because it can very much receive stolen artifacts. But second because the vast majority was obtained under (at the time) lawful means. Looting during war was legal, buying things at bargain prices is legal, buying things from the colonial government is legal, receiving donations and gifts is legal.

a) institutions can very much steal things, just talk to all of the first nations children illegally taken from their homes by governments and forced to integrate with 'society' in the 20th century. b) just because items were bought using legal tender from a trader, doesn't mean that trader sourced those items legally, and continuing to hold onto those items when the countries and cultures of the modern day have continually and vocally stated they want the items back is illegal and immoral. What described in the video is not wrong: British museum did purchase the 《Admonitions of the Instructress the Court Ladies》 from Johnson -this painting was lost due to looting during invasion - Johnson was from the Eight-Power Allied Forces. Isn’t it clear enough? I appreciate the creator didn’t overlook or overinterpret these details and try to be accurate and fair to explain it to broader audience. So please don’t overreact. 🙂
