Another thing that actually helped Finney survive is that he was abused by his dad …he knew how to be quiet and he knew how to take a hit. And he kept calm! Not to mention always being beaten by bullies…it all toughened him up. Then having the dead boys helping him, basically telling him how they failed so that he wouldn’t. Especially Robin 💔😢 every horrible thing Finney went through before, prepared him for this. This story is so twisted

I love that it’s their mothers clairvoyance passed down to them that ends up helping them in the end. The sister being able to see visions while the boy can see the dead and communicate with them. While their mother couldn’t handle her gift, likely being made to feel crazy, her children got to experience it differently.

Same!! As soon as the second act started, everyone in the theater was so invested and I’ll never forget looking around the many faces in the theater and saw almost everyone shedding a tear during Finn’s final phone call with Robin. I started getting misty eyed myself tbh since I lost a friend to suicide during the pandemic. Very touching scene especially when he teaches him how to properly defend himself and when Finn snaps the Grabber’s neck and all the boys got to say something to him? I swear there was a ROAR heard in the theater, food/popcorn thrown in the air and everyone jumped and cheered, such an awesome experience to see in IMAX

There's a lot of things I really like about this movie. The fact that they never explicitly say that Finn has a gift like his mom which is why he can talk to the dead kids, except for the quick line from Bruce about "it rang but they couldn't hear it". I also really like the fact that the dead kids weren't really out to save Finn (except maybe Robin, but he even said that he couldn't kill the Grabber so Finn would have to do it for him), they were mostly out for revenge. That just felt more authentic of a motivation than benevolent dead teenagers and made the story a little bit darker in my opinion. And that none of the kids solo escape routes worked until Finn used them all together. A really great movie that I enjoy more with every rewatch. Also, the actors were phenomenal, especially Gwennie and Finn. I read that the director actually postponed shooting to accommodate the actress who played Gwennie's schedule because he wanted her in the movie. And the actress who plays Gwennie is the older sister of Young Nell in Haunting in Hill House. The acting genes are strong in that family!

This is literally my favorite movie. I agree with Nikki that a lot of the great parts of this movie are in the tiny details - one detail about the dad that gets overlooked is that according to logos and equipment we see, he works at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant outside of Denver, which would later go on to be shut down for exposing its workers to harmful levels of radiation; which is a possible explanation for why both his children and his wife developed psychic powers.

Robin and Gwen were real ones. Genuinely can’t believe how much I loved this movie. Something about the dad that made me think he wasn’t just an abusive ass, the way he speaks to Gwen after Finney goes missing I know it’s hard to see but underneath the alcoholic abusive person there was a very torn up and broken man. In no way does that excuse his actions towards his children but it’s something I keep in mind Also the reason why 7741 is the house Gwen saw in her premonition is the boys never saw the real address only the house across the street

Considering the time period I always assumed that the father probably served in Vietnam/Korea and the loud noises trigger his PTSD not that that's an excuse for his actions. This is based off the short story by Joe Hill who is Stephen Kings son and just like his father all his works are tied together in some way or another. I assumed the phone was like the hotel in The Shining. The siblings both have abilities but I think the brother has it lessened and needs a conduit which coincidentally might have some Shining stuff associated with it.

Criminally underrated movie!! I LOVED the way it was shot and filmed, the kid actors were amazing, Hawke was phenomenal. The premise/story was unique and interesting in a time where it seems like so many movies are the same. You know the acting is good when you find yourself attached to characters like Robin who only had maybe 3 minutes of screen time total. I loved the bittersweet themes of Finn growing up, etc; he matured and found his way, but at the cost of his own innocence and a good friend. I wish Finn could have saved Robin, but I think Robin's death symbolized Finn having to stand up for himself, because no one else can. Very Stephen King-esque, which makes sense because I think his son wrote the story it's based on? Anyway, I loved the vintage 70s feel, and the way they made very bit of it's relatively short runtime count.

Criminally underrated? This movie is garbage imo. Where is the horror element in it? A criminal kidnapping young boys and killing them wow such original story trope. With some old school movie affects thats it? Where is the unique thing about it? Oh thr spirits of the dead are communicate with the main character using the phone as a tool. Such a great movie. I love that Joe Hill can write a story that's just as good as the ones his dad writes and that this movie adaptation was so good. Granted, Stephen King tends to write five 1000 page novels and a dozen short stories in the same span of time Joe Hill writes a single 500 page novel, but King is horror-story writing machine that never stops and mere mortals can't write like that.
@sentinell1208
@sentinell1208 Жыл бұрын
for me personally, the movie adaptation is better - because the book version looks kind of raw and short, like Joe Hill didn't try, there was no psychic sister in the book, there was no tyrant father, there was no Robin and other children, in the book, only Bruce called the phone, and told Finney to fill the phone with earth and fight with the grabber. By the way, in the book, Finney was kidnapped right in front of the store when he and his father were shopping!

Favorite movie of the year so far. I think this is a horror/thriller classic now for me. Everything is so well done and tied together. I love that it’s not overly showy or gory, they leave a lot of the grisly elements to your imagination which makes it so much creepier. I also get emotional during several moments of the final act. And those PERFORMANCES! Incredible film.

Just like Steven explained Finn did not know but he also had abilities whereas his sister had visions but Finn could communicate with the dead. Also, I love the fact that Gwen’s visions did not lead her and the cops straight to Finn. It is almost like Gwen’s visions KNEW he was going to be OKAY and focused mainly on FINDING THE CHILDREN who were unalived by the grabber. This is what I found so fascinating about the movie and when you think about it everyone knows psychic visions may be valid but are not always 100% accurate. That is something you hear commonly because visions always change according to predicaments and situations around the vision. The future is never SET in stone remember? I feel like Gwen wanting to find Finn was focused so much on her because that is her brother however her gift is a gift which is for doing the GREATER GOOD. In this case, it was not about finding Finn it was about leading her to the children that the cops could not solve themselves. This also made enough room for the audience to understand that her vision with this case was to help those parents looking for their kids get CLOSURE they deserved. When you think about it, it really takes a moment for you to be like oh woww. I also feel like they wanted the movie to also have more realistic elements to it because I mean even in real life psychics do exist and vision error is a thing but sometimes it is the best kind of error. If Gwen only found Finn then where would that closure be for the families who wanted to desperately find and know the whereabouts of their children. Lastly, when it comes to the dad, I read that people believed the dad was not abusive just to be abusive but because he wanted to SAVE Gwen from the same fate her mom ended up in. However, I still do not believe in beating kids nor do I believe that he was the best father (alcoholic parents always a no-no) but one may truly speculate MAYBE he was doing the best thing for her which we know that is what HE THOUGHT but Gwen still has a gift regardless and it helped her solve these heinous crimes . Now psychologically I thought about something I have learned in previous psych classes as a psych major. There is something in psychology called reinforcement and punishers. In this case, a PUNISHER is a consequence that makes a behavior less likely in the future. In this case I would apply the theory about the punisher in the fact that the dad beating Gwen and making her say ALOUD that her dreams are just dreams were associated with the pain of the belt and her distress from being beat so everytime she had the dreams she'd be conditioned not to. Nice reaction though guys !

Great points. I def believe in spanking it worked with my bad behind as a kid but this was pure abuse because it was rooted in anger and drunkeness not discipline but I also believe dad needed help. You can tell he loved his kids but likely suffered from depression and addiction after his wife's suicide. Like im curious how he was before that happened. Not excusing bad parenting or abuse but I like to understand the reasoning behind stuff and the end broke my heart because I felt his apology although he cant undo the damage he caused his children I felt his remorse and hopefully its an assumption that he got mental help and quit drinking and turned his life around for himself and his kids.

It’s funny that you brought up Sinister because this is the same director, and actually reminds me a lot of that movie because of the editing and the dead children.

I was thinking the same thing Steven was thinking when watching in theaters, when the police were searching the house and it was empty. Somehow Finney had been dead already which I thought would have been such a sad twist.

Finn has psychic abilities like his mom and his sister, while his dont show up the way they do for his sister or mom, when the phone rang he could hear it and hear their voices, that's why Bruce had said, "It rang, but none of us heard it." Just like Ethan Hawkes character he said when he heard it ring he picked it up and heard no sounds on the other side. And his sister trying to connect to find out what happened to Finn she connected to the ghosts not him, that's why she was lead to where they were buried and not where Finn was, right across the street. Also can I say how much I appreciate how smart Finn and even all the rest of the kids are? When Finn got there the first thing he did was try to remain calm and find a way out, he only let himself cry or at least let in how scared he was after he thought he had tried every option. Not only did he escape twice, but he killed him. (Also my favorite character has gotta still be Robin)

It's amazing how even tho it seemed like whatever the other dead kids told him didn't work, at the end, it all helped him to get out. The hole and the grill in the hole and the meat from the freezer. Great movie overall.

Similar to Black Phone, I loved Summer of 84’ it’s just like The Burbs. Summer of 84’ very very very underrated film. Black Phone meets The Burbs meets Stand By Me. Good movie. Highly recommend to people, not enough have watched it.

The scene with the movie clip is William Castle's The Tingler. All his premieres had classic gimmicks, , like seats vibrating, which were gold. Wish they still did these....
