Finally found a reviewer who I actually agree with for this movie lol. While I did enjoy aspects of it I was always anticipating it be so much more than what it was. And I totally agree that the use of finney talking to dead people through the phone was very underutilized. Felt like everyone was over praising the black phone when in the end it really did turn out to be a very simple kidnapping concept. Also really felt that Ethan hawke as the grabber should’ve had more scenes especially with finney. Would’ve been interesting to see them explore a bit of backstory for the grabber and why exactly he hid behind his masks.

Glad we're on the same wavelength. It's one of those movies that could have been special if some more thought went into the story. This comes from a book if I recall correctly, so I don't know if it's entirely the fault of the movie.

1:38 - WE see the kid's ghosts in the room whilst Finney is talking to them, but HE doesn't. Finney can talk to the dead, but ONLY via the phone.

Didn't Finney see the kid levitating as he pointed towards the escape clue? I too thought it was only us who could see them but the movies logic seems to contradict itself

I've been hearing advertisements for this on Spotify, but I swear the movie has been out for several years. The "You're getting out of here" has been a thing I've heard since like... 2014? Has it just been in production for ages now?

I see it listed as a 2021 movie so perhaps it was delayed slightly or perhaps released later here in the UK. I would research it but I'm very lazy.

i agree jump scares are dumb and low effort and i also hate them. it just screams “i couldn’t think of a way to make this scene scary so i’ll just throw something in your face and call it a day.”

Especially frustrating when tied to a film that actually has effective horror. I'm very tempted to cover the sinister movies to discuss this further, but I have way too many projects in the works.

iirc the jumpscares weren't put in by choice of the director as the studio thought the movie needed that extra "punch" to get viewers attention at the end (because I guess the protagonist facing the same fate as those in the tapes he watched wasnt enough of a punch).
