This is a short documentary about Simon Lavaud, a blacksmith based in the French Alps.
In this piece we explore and learn how important it is to preserve the traditional methods, and also how Simon implements some of this thinking into his own way of life.
Alex and I wanted to film a passion project last year in July since we had a couple of days off and I am so glad we did as this turned out to be one of the most interesting projects I worked on and I hope you enjoy it!
Shot on the BMPCC6K and 6K Pro in July 2023, in the French Alps.
(Best to watch in a dark room with earphones)

Excellent! Can you say if you overexposed and then put it down in-post? Shadows seen super clean. Also what microphone you used to record the various sounds? ❤

Thanks!! We didn't overexposed no, as the fire and blades were so hot we had to expose for the highlights! So I denoised a few shots and added some contrasts :) And we used the MKE600 for both the interview and ambient sounds as well as the camera mics and also some SFX.

My friend, this was shot beautifully. One question. How much light did you add to the natural lighting in order to expose so perfectly in a seemingly dark environment?

Thanks so much!! We use a Nanlite FS 150B and one Pavotube 15C II, mainly for the interview and also to add either a bit of room tone or to focus the light on the face or hands when needed. We didn't have a lot of space to work with so the main light was motivated by the window and we moved the tube around :)

Well done. What made those DZO Vespid Retro stand out for you? Why did you pick them? They seem to have a unique bokah character, also a soft fall off to the side, at least on the wider lenses. Did you shoot full frame?

Thanks so much!! I already the Vespid retros from the previous shoot and loved them so decided to also use them for this one :). This was shot in S35 since the 6K Ff wasn’t released yet.

Thank you, glad you liked it!! And no I don’t sharpen my footage, I add a little bit of contrast (and saturation) but the rest is done using Filmconvert and curves :).

Thanks!! We didn’t use any sliders or gimbals. Handheld and easyrig :). The moving knives shots were handheld with great concentration haha!
