Very nice version Elisa. A favourite known to me for decades via the always sublime Planxty. Their version contains an added musical freakout at the end (I think called Blacksmithereens) which is worth waiting for. Looking into the song a bit, I hadn't thought of the now obvious similarities to the hymn/song 'To Be a Pilgrim'. There's a strange thing going on with the history though. Ralph Vaughan Williams collected a tune from Sussex, which became called Monks Gate. He then applied Monks Gate to the old John Bunyan hymn 'To Be a Pilgrim' in 1906. He also collected the song 'Blacksmith', in Gloucester in 1909, sung to the tune... Monks Gate. Now, how could that happen? In 3 years, a traditional tune sung to a tune that RVW introduced to the wider world only 3yrs earlier and both coincidentally collected by him? I think there a missing detail somewhere, including the fact that To Be a Pilgrim and Blacksmith now sound significantly different, even if they were both sung to Monks Gate at some point. Fascinating!
