fun fact, when ichigo first got zangetsu in his training with Urahara, the title for the chapter was "The Blade AND Me", and now that Ichigo accepts and fully understands what Zangetsu truly is, the title is "The Blade IS Me". Not really the most important detail but still a fun little throwback

Yep. Chapter 66 is called "The Blade AND me" which you said with Urahara training by the End of the chapter ichigo is going to call out the name Zangetsu for the first time. Chapter 541 is called "The Blade AND me 2" Which finishes at Old man asking Ichigo to take his true Zanpakutou and chapter 542 completes the Blade series with the title "The Blade IS me" Kubo is the goat

A few notes and clarifications: - The previous flashback when Shinji and the Vizards were still Captains was 100 years before the current story, there is a small detail said near the start of the Arc where it says that the Captain of the 10th Division died; additionally, the tradition states that the 10th Division Captain should always be a Shiba, which makes Toshiro the first non-Shiba Captain. - Echt Quincies are basically Pure Bloods, compared to Gemischt which are Mixed Bloods. - Another small detail you might’ve forgot is that, during the Arrancar Arc when Uryuu escaped the underground facility Ryuken was training him in, when Isshin shows up to talk to him, Ryuken calls Isshin “Kurosaki”, and Isshin responds by saying “you never called me that before”, a foreshadowing meant to imply that he was the one that took the family name, not Masaki. - 16:09 The reason Isshin didn’t recognize Aizen, Gin or Kaname’s spiritual pressures is because they were wearing the cloaks that Urahara made back on the Turn Back the Pendulum Arc, that blocked spiritual pressure. - Old Man Zangetsu looking like Yhwach makes sense. He is the progenitor of Quincies, it’s fully logical that the physical manifestation of powers that derive from him would look like him. Most likely the reason why it’s his appearance from a thousand years ago is because that was when he was last active before his “death”. Another thing to note is that Quincies do not possess inner worlds where they can communicate with their powers like Soul Reapers do, making Ichigo the only one who has a physical manifestation of his Quincy powers. - The significance of Old Man Zangetsu isn’t just as Ichigo’s Quincy powers, he is also meant to represent his mother, and her wish of protecting and keeping Ichigo safe, exactly as the Old Man says in his speech. Him ‘stepping away ‘also signifies his mother giving him her blessing and support in continuing to tread down a path she would’ve wanted to keep him off for his safety, so he can continue to protect those dear to him, as well as now the rest of the world.

The most I could find is that the Captain in charge of the 10th Division a thousand years ago most likely seems to be an ancestor of the Shiba clan, due to the apparent sideburns he sports, which no other characters in the series outside of Shiba clansmen have.

In the manga I think Isshin also states that he can’t use his bankai when heavily injured as it requires him to focus his reiatsu in order to be used and while heavily injured he can’t do that effectively.

33:00 if you remember the first time ichigo met old man zangetsu, he tried telling ichigo his name but it was blurred out. Ichigo couldn't hear it and neither could we. The old man was trying to tell him his real name, yhwach, but he couldn't. You'll find out why he couldn't in season 2 but the signs where always there. Kubo is a foreshadowing genius

"Zangetsu" is not Literally Yuwach in the sense that it's not the literal person, But all Quincy powers come from Yuwach, so the manifestation of Ichigo's Quincy powers (and basically every other Quincy's powers) is essentially just a fragment of Yuwach. Yes, it was Blut Vene from his quincy powers that stopped the bleeding against Kenpachi. IF you also pay attention during that fight, when ichigo spiritual pressure raises before the final clash with Kenpachi, You can see White in the back manifesting. I thought it was pretty cool detail foreshadowing all of this.

Kurosaki and Ishida are two pureblood quncy families (echt quincy means true quincy) that's why uryu's grandmother wanted masaki and ryuken to marry, to continue the bloodline without tainting it. When ryuken asked himself if masaki would be happy with him it's not because he loved her but because he knew that probably they would marry in the end and he was thinking if this would make Masaki happy because he treasures her and doesn't want her to be sad. in the end, however, Ryuken got together with katagiri (who is not a pureblood), so Uryu is not a pureblood and he too should have been affected by Auswählen. why it didn't is spoilers so I'll stop there.

If episodes 6 & 7 hit you with the godly action, then these set of episodes hit you in the feels. I love how beautifully they show off Isshin and Masaki’s relationship and then later Ichigo’s and Zangetsu(s). “The Blade Is Me” was the perfect end to Cour 1 Also the foreshadowing is insane. When Ichigo was training Bankai, the way he and Old Man Zangetsu clashed is the same way he does with Yhwach in TYBW. He basically shows up like Yhwach because Yhwach is the origin of Quincies. Him wishing protecting Ichigo is all his own. You can even interpret it as a bit of his mother who was a Quincy. So despite not being the “true” Zangetsu, he’s still an inner spirit that Ichigo can speak with since he can go to his inner world. Also the zanpakutō stuff is wild. The final evolution for a Shinigami in a way is being “one” with their blade. (Sort of like how Mugetsu had him fuse completely with Zangetsu for the attack) As you saw they disappeared but Ichigo can summon them at will. Only one other character has achieved this union with their blade as far as I’m aware. Your theorizing was so fucking on point man. From Unohana to Zangetsu and it’s been great watching!

There are plenty of scenes that could be considered by "some" as unnecessary and they weren't cut out such as the guy above me mentioned with Izumi. Not every decision the production team makes is good. Because i would've loved to see that scene with Isshin and you/we don't even know for if we won't see his Bankai for sure. Who knows? Kubo could add new scenes

Yuha's Quincy powers are represented as the 'old man zangetsu', but it has its own free will , & is independent from yuha's will. Nevertheless, it was an imposter pretending to be ichigo's Shinigami spirit ,while the real zangatsu was always the white. However, in the end ichigo didn't reject the Quincy spirit & accepted it also as Zangatsu. Hence the 2 blades, where the small one is the Quincy 'Zangestu'.

It shows that the hints are all there, most people just don't get them (or forget about something they thought about 100 episodes ago). Ryuken wasn't really interested in Masaki like that, as far as we know. They were in an arranged marriage because there were so few pure blood quincy's left (not counting Yhwach and his crew hidding in the shadow realm) and his parents felt it was very important to keep the pure bloodline. As we see here Yhwach still rules based on the ideology, that a pure quincy bloodline is superior. That's why he takes all the power from every impure quincy to strengthen himself. This includes Masaki (because she was infected with White) and Uryu's mother who was never a pure blood (that's why she is more like a maid).

For clarification, the kurosaki is a distant family kinda like finding out someone has the same last name but are not a relative. Misaki's case, she was taken in by Ryuken's family after the decrease of the Kurosaki family. In japan, I believe those who are taken in like Misaki will address the ones that took them in as auntie to uncle. Think of the family tree, the more it breaks off the more the blood is diluted from the the first family. I think.

They didn't really dissappear. Zangetsu (Shinigami powers)/White (Hollow powers) became the larger Zanpakutou and Old man became the smaller one which represents his Quincy powers. As shown in episode 13 where both White and Old man's spirit are above the blades. Ichigo accepted "both" as Zangetsu that's the whole reason he got dual blades and one is White and the other is Old man who would've actually seriously disappeared if Ichigo wouldn't have accepted him also as Zangetsu. That's the whole point, Ichigo accepting Old man also as Zangetsu and hence having dual Blades which each represents their specific races/soul

a quick lil thing some people noticed, if you go back and hear the first time ichigo meets zangetsu, his name is blurred out. but at the end you can hear the "ha" only. it means that when the anime originally came out they knew yhwatch would eventually come so, even though his name is blurred out, you can hear the last part of his name still.

Been waiting for this, this is one of my favorite storylines so far, honestly some of the best writing imo. The flashback with Shinji was 101 years ago, the Flashback in these episodes is about 20 years ago I believe. 9:26 I think what Ryuken was saying here is that he doesn't believe in marriage for the sake of preserving a bloodline and doesn't want to marry Masaki unless she'd be happy with him. (I think this is also part of why he hates being a Quincy and why he's so disappointed with Uryu for wanting to be one so badly). Ryuken and Masaki are pure blooded Quincies "Echt", the maids aren't and are called "Gemischts". 11:49 and 21:58 I love the parallel between these two, they're so much a like and Ryuken knew it too. 12:20 It's cut from the anime, but it's explained that Aizen cut Isshin here because he cannot use Bankai is he's heavily damaged because it puts a lot of strain on his body. 12:24 Aizen is wearing the same cloak that Urahara used in the Turn back the pendulum arc to hide his spiritual pressure, this man got him exiled and also stole his tech. Ichigo's mom was pretty awesome. 13:58 Bakudo 81 Danku, blocks kido based attacks up to 89, but seems to be able to block others things as well. 21:16 Isshin just has to be close to her (probably within the same city or even country), they don't have to be with each other physically or romantically, it just happened to work out that way. Something to remember is that Ichigo has always blamed himself for his mothers death and that has weighed on him heavily throughout his entire life, now that he knows for a fact that he's not the one responsible for her death that weight has been removed and it'll no longer hold him back. 28:25 If anyone has any right to bad mouth Tosen its Kensei, he was directly betrayed by him. "You're both Zangetsu to me" hits so hard. Two swords to represent his two sides. The big sword with the hole represents his Soul reaper/Hollow powers and the small sword to represent his Human/Quincy powers Ichigo is the one and only true fusion of every race, he is literally the Avatar of the Bleach universe.

bit of a late comment, but in the soul society arc when ichigo first unleashes his bankai, the shot of toshiro and rangiku specifically being surprised feels like its given a different meaning after learning about their previous captain. Obviously it focused on them two because they were a part of the aizen reveal, but their surprise towards ichigo's reiatsu could also be seen as them noticing its similarity to isshin.

since ichigo never had an asauchi up to this point and the hollow was always his sword, this suggests that the sword he's been using the whole time is closer to an arrancar zanpaktou rather than a shinigami zanpaktou. this also suggests that tensa zangetsu is closer to a resurrecion than a bankai, which is hinted at by how the quincies couldnt steal it.

Yeah, the implication is the reason Ichigo had a Zanpakuto without having an Asauchi is because it wasn't a Zanpakuto, it was a Quincy "Spirit Weapon", his "bow" so to speak. Quilge Opie, the Jail, had a sword for a "bow". Quincy make weapons, even solid ones, out of reishi. And Ichigo was making his "Zanpakuto" by Zangetsu making it out of reishi for him to channel his Shinigami powers through, allowing him to use his Shinigami abilities and master Shikai and Bankai, all without having a true Zanpakuto. The problem is just this medium was limited, so to realize his true power, he had to forge Zangetsu out of an Asauchi to get a true Zanpakuto.

But it’s when characters aren’t saying what they’re really feeling I think Kubo is pretty unique for the subtle facial expressions in anime because its just drawings of faces, usually only live actors use their eyes and facial expressions to convey subtle emotions. It’s so hard to draw it without a super exaggerated expression. With the Zangetsu stuff, I always interpreted it like this: Old Man Zangetsu inside of Ichigo's inner world is like a xerox of Ywach. They have the same history, memories, goals, etc, but it's not Ywach in the same sense as the one that is laying waste to Soul Society. It's like buying a new computer. All the other computers of that same brand have the same factory default settings, but once you take them home, they're legally yours and you can make personal modifications as you see fit. The factory default Ywach that came with Ichigo eventually came to understand, appreciate, and align with Ichigo's own goals despite being pre-installed as a Quincy Shinigami power cockblock.

I mean, Old Man Zangetsu is pretty much the version of Yhwach from exactly thousand years ago who was trying to destroy the Soul Society. It's more like that Old man saw Ichigo growing up and and later supporting his decision because he loved him. Ichigo kinda changed Old man's "original" personality which was the Yhwach 1000 years ago who was trying to destroy SS which we have seen in the beginning of episode 6. By the way in the Blu Ray version of ep 6 Yhwach doesn't have a Mustache in the flashback scene of the beginning of the episode where he attacks SS

Okay, second time I'm commenting. Long comment, no spoilers, just explanation for stuff so far. 1. Echt, gemischt quincy stand for pure blooded, impure quincy respectively. Echt quincies consider themselves superior. 2. Masaki was an Echt quincy from a different family who was adopted into the Ishida family with the intent to make her and Ryuken marry. This would make sure that Ryuken would also have an Echt quincy child. So, it is entirely about preserving purity of bloodlines and stuff. As you saw, that didn't end up happening, and he insteaded ended up with Katagiri, a Gemischt quincy, and later Uryu was born. 3. Yhwach did an Auswahlen 9 years ago to take away powers from all quincy he considered impure. Katagiri was a Gemischt, hence impure. She was also frail, and simply didn't survive having her powers taken. Masaki was an Echt quincy, but was tainted by the hollow in her. She was powerful enough to survive her quincy powers being taken, but was just unlucky that it happened when she was facing Grand Fisher. 4. About Old Man Zangetsu (OMZ): All quincies are descended from Yhwach. So, the source of their quincy powers is from the fraction of Yhwach's own quincy reiatsu that split from him when they were born. So, Ichigo has the reiatsu that split from Yhwach when Masaki's bloodline originated some 1000 odd years ago. So, OMZ contains the personality and memories of Yhwach from that time. That is why he says to Ichigo that he first thought that if Ichigo became a soul reaper, he would suffer and eventually have to fight the Yhwach of today. However, OMZ acknowledges that Ichigo has become really strong, and is capable of holding his own now, and therefore gives up on resisting and holding him back by suppressing his powers, and let's him use all of it now. 5. About the speculation about Yachiru, you're getting some things. Just don't worry about it, it'll eventually become clear near the end of Cour 3 or start of Cour 4 whenever that comes out XD

I heard that the reason why isshin got his powers back was because when Ichigo's inner hollow was released, his soul reaper powers returned because i think his powers sealed the hollow and also another interesting detail in the manga (idk about anime) is that when isshin met up with ryoken, ryoken called isshin kurosaki and said you(ryoken) never called me that(something like that)

He is just taking the form of Yhwach when he appears in Ichigo's inner world (from the thousand years ago which is why he looks younger with no bushy moustache). His form simply represents Ichigo's Quincy powers while White on the other hand fused with Ichigo's soul reaper powers.

All Quincy have a piece of Yhwach's soul within them. Ichigo can see that manifestation of Yhwach's soul because he's a soul reaper who has an inner world. Quincy do not have an inner world, so they can't see and interact with the piece of Yhwach's soul within them.

Not sure if someone addressed this yet but Sajin Kommamura’s world is based on the animal realm in Buddhism. Most of the realms in this series are directly based on the realms from Buddhism. There is of course our world, Hell, Hueco Mundo (Hungry Ghosts realm) Animal realm, Soul Society, (the god realm ) etc. Only the Quincy world does not really fit here but you could say it’s the Demi god realm. It fits cause some Buddhist literature talks about a war they fought with the god realm. But clearly the Quincies have many European influences in their design (Sternritter means star knight, they kinda look like Nazis, Ywach is a Jesus like figure, and they are basically angels) so I might be stretching Generally the animal, hungry ghosts, sometimes the Demi god realm, and hell are considered bad places to go. The god realm is good because you are ascending in enlightenment. The end goal of course is nirvana in their beliefs. I am oversimplifying stuff but I hope this helps contextualize Kommamura’s realm. This will be relevant later.

Because of the power of the Hollow “White” was passed to Masaki (Ichigo mother) and then when she became pregnant with Ichigo that power passed on to Ichigo fusing itself with the Shinigami powers he had inherited from his father. Combining the power of a vasto lorde arrancar with the power of soul reaper captain, makes white 2 times stronger than an average soul reaper or an espada. And the old man was the part of Ichigo that represented his Quincy powers that were passed on by his mother that was born as a pure blood Quincy. However because he is mixed with all three species they’re natural characteristics affected each other. Because soul reapers manifested the powers as spirits white and the Quincy became ichigo’s spirit guides. By nature soul reaper, hollow, and Quincy repel each other. Hollow would kill a soul reaper or a Quincy. And Quincy would kill a soul reaper or a hollow. However because they were born with him they took on his traits and his emotions. Turning them into his zanpakuto. White kept his wild hollow nature but also transformed it into a warrior's killer instinct and only use it to help ichigo when he’s backed into a corner. The Quincy spirit kept his Nobel dominant nature and used it to protect ichigo and what matters to him.
