I've owned one for 8 years. 300 Win Mag that is deadly accurate with 180 gr Barnes TTSX. 6.5X55 Swede with 143 gr. Hornady ELDX is the same. So many smart features. Straight pull is fast/reliable, detachable scope that when re-attached is spot on, iron sights, ergonomic, breaks down/compact for travel, and with two barrels and bolt heads covers all the game you may want to take in Africa or any other continent. Pricy - yes but buy once/cry once!

@Joshua Bressel Hello Joshua. No experience with the rifle, although I have held one! Just an observation. If you pay a lot for something, well in to the "I'm not sure I should spend this amount of money on this" territory, you're going to convince yourself you like it, at least for a while. Any niggles will be ascribed to oneself, for a while. A bit like a bad marriage to a trophy wife (not speaking from personal experience there either, and I haven't held one).

@Chewedbacca

There's a little toggle on the magazine floor that locks it into the stock. It shows an "S" when locked. There's also many different mounts for the saddle mount, like Innomount, MAK, EAW etc, that are are way way cheaper. Also, the manual cocker doesn't have to be cocked before the first shot, you make it sound like it's an SA/DA type system, which it isn't, it cocks on close, so you can leave it on cock all the time. The trigger group is not housed in the magazine, it's merely a push bar that actuates the sear which is in the bolt. Also an important aspect is that you should always take your can off, especially after shooting, as Blaser barrels are corrosion sensitive. Blaser barrels are also very very tolerant to anything you feed them and they're pretty much guaranteed to hold an inch group at a hundred meters, which is about what you need for a heart shot. Another very important factor to know before buying one of these bad boys is that there is barely any jobs to be done on it by a regular Joe gunsmith without sending it off to Isny, where blaser sits, as the stock is just a piece of wood or polymer, the barrel is just the barrel and the bolt is where all the insanely finicky Kraut space magic is housed, so no trigger jobs etc. The mounting system, the principle behind it is one of the most exceptional ideas out there, because the optic, no matter what it is, sits not on the receiver (there is none) but on the barrel itself, and it attaches by four milled points, so zero retention is practically the law of the land. And like I already mentioned, other manufacturers offer cheaper mounts than Blaser itself that also perfectly guarantee that repeatable zero. The basic big advantage of all this is that you could in theory have a . 243 deer barrel and a .30-06 deer barrel with different optics on both, and just swap the barrels without any other measures than an Allen key and retain perfect zero repeatably.

Also, Blaser equips every rifle with their own IC system that sits in the clocking piece, that only works on Blaser branded optics, and turns on the red dot when cocked. Which in turn is total BS, as Blaser optics are just rebranded Minox scopes in a different housing with about a 1000 buck upmark, and Minox doesn't even come close to Swarovski in terms of quality.

The 22 hornet is only available to the K95 (and combination guns). You also get rimfire kit for the R8 now (22 LR). Own one. They plan to release other rimfire kits as well. I have a Blaser R8. One barrel in 338LM for LR work, a 300WinMag for hunting and a 308 Win for practising or small game hunting. All 3 barrels shoot .5 MOA with handloads all day. The flexibility is incredible. Many Calibers used on the same platform. Usually between 1500 and 2000 Shots the barrels start to loose accuracy when shooting these fast Magnums. But guess what? Just order a replacement barrel that arrives within a month and replace it in 30 seconds. For me, this is the best rifle ever built. Check out THLR.NO, he does PRS matches with it.
@nemir2550

What's the barrel contour of your fast calibers? I disagree with you about loss of accuracy after 1500-2000 shootings. I've got Blaser R8 in 270 WSM in semi weight 19 mm barrel, 58 cm long. Spent over 2000 and still shoots .5 MOA or less whole day.
@MrSchnyderli
@MrSchnyderli 4 жыл бұрын
They're all semi weight barrels. I've made different experiences. My statement with 1500-2000 is just a rule of thumb. Most standard loaded Magnums are going to burn out the barrel within that range. It's well possible that your WSM is still going strong, there are many variables coming in to play. As long as it shoots tight, keep it.

That trigger safety design doesn’t cut it. A rifle needs to be able to function in case of charging big game. Even if the magazine is removed, the gun needs to be able to fire: lot quicker to at least get one round in the chamber than depend on sliding in another magazine/trigger assembly.

Most proper serious african big game hunters will opt for a traditional double barrel with open sights and for good reasons. However, the Blaser can fit that role too. The manual cocking is not as awkward as the guy made it seem, with a little practice its just as fast as flicking off a traditional safety and if you go hunt big game in the brushes you better practice a lot beforehand.

"five and a half grands worth of rifle" I've never heard the s plural for grand (multiple of $1,000) in the US, at least when used to mean money, grand is singular and plural (like moose). Is "grands" plural a UK style of the slang, a Mr Harrison thing, or just a misspeak? Anyway, great video on an interesting rifle!
@Stigstigster
@Stigstigster 2 жыл бұрын
It's just British English. It doesn't need to even be multiples of a thousand to say it that way. You could just as well say of something costing £1000 "Nice rifle! That must be at least a grand's worth there?" Surely you guys wouldn't say "That must be at least a grand worth there?" would you? Or would you? It's not in the plural, it is in the possessive sense. It's like the money holds the worth of the object. We also use the word in the way you describe too. If you asked for a valuation on something, "What do you think this rifle is worth?", it would be fine to say "You've got five grand there." But you could also say "You've got five grand's worth there."

The trigger/magazine design is to reduce overall length by about a 100mm verses a traditional magazine forward of the trigger guard. The screw quick change barrel system is not a features that belongs on anything other than a battle rifle. It simply degrades accuracy and precision as torque on the screws tend to wander under thermal load.
@alt5494
@alt5494 4 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Lanton If all screws are torqued to the same value. Many different torque values of course will be accurate, but that had nothing to do with precision. The problem with this system is one of the screws will always be closer to the front of the chamber. Heating to higher temperatures under pressure and thermal expansion will always have a different torque value. If the rifle is never rapidly fired and nor shot at long range targets the user will never notice. If this rifle actually had no zero shift it's precision version would be widely adopted it isn't. Unless the system is overbuilt with multiple screws sharing the load as in the desert tech SRS. It will not be capable of true precision. The blaser design only has two inline screws. To say nothing of it's lugless bolt design nothing about the blaser is designed for accuracy. It's your 5k but calling it sub MOA is fantasy.

Safetys can fail. And if you hunt in an area that is populated you dont want to send a bullet towards a village or hikers. Even if you hunt alone in a remote location you dont want a bullet in your guts when tripping and dropping the rifle on the ground. When the striker istn even cocked in the first place it is impossible to fire accidentaly. The manual cocking piece is large and grippy, it is not any more of a hassel to engage than a regular safety. Detaching the entire trigger assembly is optional, you can just leave it in there and you wont loose it. But there are cases it can make sense to just be able to remove the trigger assembly entirely, in that case you can do it. Also, one rarely recognised advantage of having the Trigger and the Magazin combined is the overall gun can be shorter while having the full barrel lenght. Now you might say thats rediculous but to some of us thats the -6cm that mean the world.

@@lobster8009 as an American firearms enthusiast, I think there’s a divergence in firearms safety standards between Europeans and Americans. Ultimately I’m of the opinion that many of these features would appear to make the firearm “safer” but wouldn’t make an incompetent handler any less dangerous than if they had a firearm without those features. I cannot think of a single modern production rifle that isn’t drop safe. Moreover, while in the field, I never travel with a round in the chamber as a self-imposed safety measure. There comes a point when it’s not the firearm but the user who is a safety risk. The divergence in firearms law really informs the perception of the reasonableness of these features. As he said, I would never pay for this rifle. Particularly when I can purchase a Sako, Tikka, Browning or Weatherby for much cheaper with near identical, if not superior, performance. It may lack some of the niceties, but I again I believe my opinions more revolve around the rifle being a tool to harvest game. I don’t need a Porsche to get my groceries.

@@JACKBLACKTOSE If I lived in the USA, I would also not purchase one. But in Europe, this is a very versatile gun that can also be used in driven hunts and stalking. In Europe, in most places, semiautomatic weapons used for hunting are limited to 3 rounds (1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine) -- there is no limitation for repeating rifles, so a straight pull that shoot almost as fast as a semiauto and is not limited to 3 rounds ins very useful in a driven hunt. Plus, this rifle is 6.5 pounds, it is very short because the trigger is below the magazine. It is very expensive but has a lot of appeal in Europe.

I watched one of these explode in someones face a few years ago. Wasn't a pretty sight. Guy survived but got majorly messed up. Never found out why it happened, but it was enough to make me find a new found respect for traditional lugged bolt action rifles. The round in question was a 300 Norma, so not exactly a small case. Lots of powder. Bolt came straight backwards into the poor shooters face.

@Bobby Lanton I saw it with my own two eyes mate. In Victoria Australia, Eagle Park rifle range in Little River. Bolt came free of the rifle and smashed into the face of the shooter. There was a lot of blood and what I imagine to be some serious life long injuries to the poor guy behind the trigger. I heard rumors that ADF purchased the destroyed rifle post the incident to investigate further, but I don't know if this is fact or fiction. You may not believe me, but I have personally seen this happen.

I am not familiar with any R8 blowups. I AM familiar with a 338LM R93 /Tac2 that blew up in Australia. That was a few years ago and was attributed to user error. Also the AUS Army uses the Tac2 which might be why they would be interested in it. I doubt they looked twice at an R8 which they don’t run. Even if it did happen. So I suspect you are referring to a Tac2 incident of 2014. What range and when exactly did this take place in AUS? Regards, Marky

@Bobby Lanton If I recall, the Tac2/R93 incident in Australia involved a user hand loading 338LM. Stuff was going wrong and he was getting stuck cases. Which is a clue. Usually people stop shooting at that point. So...he decided to lube the cases to make them easier to eject! Which eventually resulted in he action letting go. Again…if I recall this incident correctly…the general thinking was how impressive it was the Tac2 action held for as long as it did. That's the only 338 incident I am familiar with and had nothing to do with the TAC2's design. But it's been a while so some of the details I would have to review. -Marky

When you shoot 10 rounds or more it gets hot and then it's very hard to close the bolt. And the safety is bullshit. When you need a good Hunting rifle then you should go to ruger, savage, bergara, tikka, steyr, cz, mauser, browning or so. You don't need a ugly 5000 dollar rifle.
