Peach isn't really getting kidnapped, she's going to babysit at Bowser's castle. Mario mentioned that coming to pick her up is a bit boring, so Bowser (being the ludicrously rich bro that he is) hired a bunch of randos off the internet to build obstacle course for Mario to try on his way to pick up Peach. You're not really using up 'lives', it's just how many tries Mario is willing to make before he gives up and just takes the side road to pick her up.
