You didn't need to translate the Japanese text. The English version has that script implemented too and you could have checked it using the rom on Advance map (0x2279B7 is the address). It goes like this: - If you win, he will say: "That was superlative! Why, it was like seeing myself in my youth again!"; - If you draw, he will say: "So, it became a standoff. It was a brilliant match in which neither side conceded a step!"; - If you lose, he will say: "Ah, too bad for you! But it was a good match. I hope you can win next time." Like insisting on using the German version (but searching in English for gameshark codes and, predictably, finding English version codes), the weirdly long efforts at the beginning to reach the house, and then as you mention downplaying the old man's dialogue. Though, I *am* really impressed that the machine translator actually came up with a workable translation of the old man's dialogue, since he's talking in some weird old man type dialect in Japanese

Yeah, it was definitely for e-reader functionality. There's an almost identical location in Ruby and Sapphire that uses the e-reader cards for fixed trainer battles. That was actually how I first found out that the data for a lot of the previous generation's Pokemon were coded in the game.

nah, the trees were also there in the japanese version when the e-reader still was a thing. My guess is, that the e-reader would've activated an event that removed the trees, probably after talking to the old man with the card active. Localization removing the trees wouldn't make sense either, since they probably just edit text without checking the maps. Plus, even if they checked the maps, a blocked off staircase wouldn't be something they'd bother with.

The old man blocked the door because on the second floor, he hid a memory of himself from long ago. See, he used to be a Mountain Hiker when he was younger, but due to a tragic incident, he was involved in an accident that had him stuck under rocks for months. When he was finally rescued, he gave up being a Pokemon trainer and a mountain man. But that room remained, because in it he hid the dear memories of his younger self. That's why he says "You did it" and "It was like looking at my younger self again" after you defeat the man on the second floor.

I really liked (and still like) Sootopolis when I played it back in the day. In fact I really liked the dive mechanic, one of the many failures with SM and SwSh was how small and boring the maps were. Seriously there was nowhere to go, sure they look pretty but nowhere to explore, nothing to find.

The Old Man was a retired member of Team Aqua. The Hiker enclosed was an Omen. Once you beat him then talk to the Old Man Blocks the Staircase. Go to talk to the President Of Devon Corporation. Youll see two investigators pop up outside the building. They say we have new information. Now Go back to where the old man blocks the staircase youll see the 2 investigators standing behind him outside of the building. Go back to the staircase and you will be surprised at what happens a loud water draining sound. And when you exit Soototopolis all the water has dried up. Walk to the waterfall under victory road there is an open cave go into the cave its like literally 400 flights of stairs once you reach the bottom you will unlock the biggest secret in pokemon and i wont ruin it but i will say this. That hiker that the old man was hiding is down there and he will say "i have ran this far and i will not stop" turns out he was a fugitive. You figure out the rest its in japanese so good luck translating. To this day ive benefit from what i found down there.

It's fully functional and is the exact same as the Mosdeep e-reader house in Ruby & Sapphire which supported both Japanese and North American e-battle and item cards.

I am baffled that you just skipped over the fact, that the hiker had a SHINY Pokémon! Like, I know there is nearly no data but there seems to be a bit of data, otherwise it would make no sense that the question mark lvl 0 would be shiny right? There is another video on the eReader Cards on KZbin somewhere that explains, that some trainers you could fight with the eReader had shiny Pokémon. I was stunned not to find any comments regarding this (tho I might have missed those comments that did mention it)

Removing the plant sprites wasn’t necessary as long as you changed their collision boxes (you’d simply walk through them and into the staircase). I wonder, had you left the sprites alone, would they still be gone after completing the battle & exiting? I’m sure they would in order to make room for the old man. Still interesting though.

Finally, ever since I discovered this hidden entrance in Pokémon Emerald over a decade ago I always asked myself what they wanted to hide. First I thought it was only accessible after the Elite Four and defeating the Champion, well, when that didn't happen I was disappointed. Then I went to the Hoenn Battle Frontier and forgot about it for a while, because the Battle Factory was epic and I spent like most of the time there because I could temporarily own Pokémon I wasn't able to catch. Thanks for clarifying :D (the results of battling her are the same, with generic dialogue of her reminiscing about being a pokemon trainer when she was younger. if you manage to use warp codes or walk through walls, you get in a trainer battle with Archie, the leader of Team Aqua, who sends out a shiny question mark in battle. Which is strange, instead of a generic trainer, why is it Archie? Maybe a special event was planned with the e reader and then scrapped.)

FR and LG is built with the same engine as RS so all the trainer sprites are left in the code just dummied out. The Archie trainer data is near the beginning.

I remember having these cards and the reader as a kid. The cards would have some info hidden on the trainers so it was half a surprise of what you would get/see. I’m pretty sure it gave you access to a few rare berries on some cards or e-reader specific berries. Got the collection at my parents place somewhere..

Nintendo already planned in advance everything that the public will attempt to do, even in the future. They even admitted that they put text into Emerald as they were designing it to give legendaries to the player once they completed the required tasks. They made it knowing that they someone would make the game sometime in the future. The game will play like Nintendo intended it to, even though someone else made the game. The game is called Cosmic Emerald. The game even reads in the event slot 2 distrobution file.

I guess that Nintendo is gathering data from people playing the game to use as possible reference for data points since the cutscene in Pokemon Crystal was clearly referencing our successful attempt at making celebi fully gaureented to be shiny in the previous version of the game.

They have done this at least in the original pokemon games as they explained in a really early interview with fighting the swimmer with no pokemon. They said that the fight specifically was never ending and the only way to stop the fight was turn off the game or the system runs out of battery. We even somehow did the fight completely legally following the game code, and the fight still kept on repeating itself over and over again. It is fine if you do not believe me, I sort of only believed it myself at first anyways until I fought the trainer myself, I believe. I believe that the trainer actually says it directly in the game under very strict and specific conditions as well. The trainer also gives forewarns about challenging him with no pokemon as well, also said under certain circumstances. Nintendo knew already of what the players were going to do regarding getting the ability to challenge him as well.

My belief is that this house was meant to serve as a Battle House of sorts. It's been nearly twenty years since I played Gold, so forgive me if I get anything wrong, but, if I remember correctly, there was a similar house in Viridian City, in which the player can battle a trainer identical to himself called Pokémon Trainer Cal, who had a Meganium, a Typhlosion, and a Feraligatr. Like the room featured in the video, the player would automatically walk up to Cal and the battle would initiate. Afterward, the player would automatically walk back upstairs out of the room, where the Battle House NPC would make some sort of remark that I can't remember. I find it likely that, if this is indeed the case, the feature was scrapped close to completion of the game, and that it was simply barred off without complete removal so the player could not wander into an unfinished part of the game that time did not allow for the erasure of. Perhaps the e-Reader was involved, but I know very little about it, not enough to speculate in that regard.

The Japanese version of Emerald had a set of e-reader cards where scanning one would mean being able to battle a specific npc. There were about 64 trainers to choose from. Unfortunately a lot of the cards sell for a pretty high price and while the bulbapedia article has each pokemon team for the npc, there doesn't seem to be a scan of what the card looked like.
