I saw them live in Chicago at the late, great Double Door, and was absolutely blown away by them. Must have been around 1995. Just a glorious band. I even though the "dancer" was a hoot.

This is the only instance of which I am aware, of a band providing a deceptively upbeat rock setting for an extremely distressed poem by the rather tragic Sylvia Plath. It's from the magnificent album 'Swagger'. I've seen The Blue Aeroplanes play a number of times over the years. It was slightly easier for me than for many, since I grew up in their native Bristol. That included one gig at the rather swanky Victoria Rooms around 1990, when a particularly boisterous audience literally danced its way through the floor, creating a seriously dangerous hole right in front of the middle of the stage. The gig carried on, nonetheless. I think they are still playing. They certainly were a few years ago. One consistent highlight of their gigs used to be that as part of their encore they would get the entire support band(s) on stage with them, so there could easily be something like 10 or 12 guitarists thrashing away, obviously as rehearsed. Amazing band.

I was at that Victoria Rooms gig and yes, the floor totally collapsed. By a miracle no-one was hurt. But talk about bringing the house down…

What used to be funny was seeing Gerard on stage giving it his all and next day seeing him all unassuming behind the counter of that indie record shop on Park Street.
