In the work yard, we have been busting our butts inside the tent to get things knocked off our list while we still have the ability to work without the aid of heaters. Matt's big push for the month of November is to get as many of our flush deck hatch molds in as possible. Once they've been glassed (and hopefully we'll cover that more in next week's episode), he has to measure and cut the space in the deck where they'll sit - and then get them bonded in.
We do take a break from the work and get on a charter boat for the day, where we've spent the past few months trying to raise money for Fish For a Cure. On on the Chesapeake Bay, we try to catch the biggest rockfish of all the 70-some boats participating. And, we have a heck of a great day while trying.
Then it's back to work, where I take over the screen and show some of the fairing I've been up to in the master hull. For weeks I've been tackling areas, trying to get them just perfect before receiving a tip that will now change everything. A simple blue dye to work as a guide coat.
We hope you enjoy!

Tip: Sand at 45 degree angles that criss cross (like X). It makes for a very straight, even surface. Sanding in straight lines just means a lot more work to try to get a very straight/flat surface.

It's both inspiring and interesting to watch your progress. It's a long road, but the incremental improvements in things like fairing, going from one compound to one that works better to a process improvement that works even better than that. The process improvements are, I'm sure, hard won, but it's gratifying to see. You guys are great!

MJ, Have you considered using your "pasty bag" as a liner in your mixing cup. Use a rubber band to hold it if that helps but mix directly in the bag and then remove. No scooping, no waste and it saves the cup. Just a thought. Keep up the great work it's really coming along.

Sand in 45 degree angle to the floor then reverse and go in 45 degrees in the same place this gives you a cross hatch effect and the low and high spots will get sanded properly, if you use the sanding block in all different directions around in circles left right up down you inevitably will sand in the same spot too much and not enough in another spot and create more valleys

The EVA foam decking will look like a$$ after one or two seasons. You might want to think about something like a rolled-on type of nonskid that you can actually get clean and won't get funky. You might want to try the 3M Cubitron paper with the Hook-it backing. This stuff lasts waaayy longer than the stuff you are using. Also try sanding in diagonal direction then reverse direction so you are cross hatching. Cuts faster that way. I'm so ADD about it, I'd be sanding for about three years on that thing. Nothing bugs me more than finding a crater in the surface after the paint goes on...I guess you gotta figure out the level of finish you can live with and pick a point that you haft move on too the next panel ha ha ha.

It needs fiberglass on the radius (just a bond isnt enough) and would have required gelcoat and glass work on the hatch exterior edge anyway. We did the aft hatches the way you describe because they are exposed on the flats, where these will be under the nonskid and easier to blend in.

First off, thank you for bringing us along with this build. But, I would rather hear the sanding block, power tools or frankly just the resin curing than the inane music that is played in some of your videos. Just talk, you don't need the music. It adds nothing. That said, you are about the last "sailing" channel I watch because you actually still do something related to boats and boat building. Many others just seem to take nature hikes, dive with their backsides hanging out or preach about how their vegetarian diet is the only way to live and how the oceans will dry up next Tuesday if we don't start eating bugs or some other nonsense. So please, show more of the boat build stuff and less fluff. I for one, think it is fascinating, and as you have likely surmised, I for one could careless about the other filler. Building your own sailboat is such a massive undertaking that requires so many different skillsets and talents, nevermind money, as well as great bravery, that I find it fascinating. So many of these tasks transfer into non marine applications as well, so that even those of us that will never undertake such a large project, can still learn something useful in your videos while still being entertained. Thanks again.

Fair enough, if that's the case. Probably best if you skip over that section. I've honestly never seen those knives before, so it's new to me and, I suspect, many others. That may be my bias. But Jessica's acting and humour is surely far beyond any other KZbin promoter? I genuinely would watch *her* marketing for the sake of seeing what she's up to now! She really is very, very funny. The channel IS awesome, as you say, and we get it for "free" (kinda - Google's abhorrent targetted adverts excluded). 99% of adverts & marketing are a pain in the butt but I honestly look forward to seeing what MJ Sailing are up to advertising-wise as well as sailing-wise.

USE ACETONE not alcohol with blue dye, dykem. Acetone will "thin" the die much better and the rate of drying is 10x faster. Alcohol is not wrong to use but its not the best choice. Blue dye dykem it is a great sanding aid, BUT REALLY its sanding with math. using DYKEM your sandpaper has an expected average mill rate of cutting to 100% remove the blue dyed surface. The trick is knowing your thickness. That has more to do with gelcoat btw.... DYKEM you can use to sand the surface to 3000 grit plus and should when doing sanding/buffing finish work on the gelcoat.. "PRO TIP!!!!!" When it comes to dealing with island low spots when filling with fairing. circle it with a pencil give a good bit of space say 1-2" away . then sand out the blue die low spot "ISLAND" SKIM it with filler. Your pencle mark should more or less be untouched. when ready re-dye the surface and sand. That method makes sanding lows VERY fast. An other FYI tip. BLACK sharpy markers are really blue die. use plyers pull apart the body of the marker. pull out the ink well slit it with a blade, and throw it into acetone. instant blue dye.

I absolutely love your ironic playfulness! Brilliant thinking and acting! I recognise how excessive sanding might give time for creativity. What’s the best value, the fair surface or the rough humour? Tough match! :-D
