Don't worry, Jess. You may have shown all the fairing that you believe anyone could want to see, but we'll keep watching even if that's all the content you have in a week. I know you all have a long, long way to go, but it is still so satisfying to watch your progress each week!

Thank you so much!! It's actually a fairly theraputic process for me to do each day - just pop in earbuds and listen to the news or music and just go to work. A few others have actually joked that I should start a live stream each time I fair because they would just have it on in the background, lol.

I think on vessels where a majority of the surfaces are not finished in a vinyl or veneer, about 50% of the build time is dedicated to fairing and painting. 😮 Balance told us their 48 ft yachts have around 11,000 hours dedicated to that part of the build.
@berinslaptop

PRO TIP, from a person who built Hinkly yachts for years... If you want to bulk fill low spots on polyester based surfaces. Use BRUSH ABLE gelcoat. A 4" chip brush or "FOAM" roller tools that are less likely to leave particals. Add about 5%-10% cabosil to the gelcoat. Mix in sanding aid wax if not already part of it, and use the standard 1.5-2% mekp. Mix small batches to minimize waste. Apply to surface and work in gel to lows and holes if any with a brush and follow quickly with a stiff metal straight edge, to scrape the surface FLAT and smooth. All lows will be filled in and highs will be pulled clean. No wax and you will have an OXIDE layer mess to deal with. On the next sanding blue dye and the work speed will 10x. Also if you have to do a gelcoat spray job, more so DUMP GUN gelcoat. You can do the same trick apply gelcoat brushable or slightly thickened scrap smooth and follow with a dump gun gelcoat spray job immediately!!!!!!!!!!!! and you will have little to no risk of aligation. It will speed up large frp tabbing seams 10x. Many people waste time using fillers like p77 etc... and sanding a finish first. TOTAL waste of time, product and money.

I like this approach. All the fairing seems to be a huge waist of time and money to make the final product 1% better. I understand y’all want perfectly flat and smooth surfaces, but I think this approach will get you there a lot faster. I don’t know anything about fairing a boat, but we do a lot of body work on charter buses and private multimillion dollar buses, and our body shop can fair and smooth out an entire side of a bus within a few days max. All I’m trying to say is there has to be a much easier way. Good luck! Wish y’all the best. And yes, like many others have said, we all would watch time-lapses of fairing and sanding for weeks in a row.

I’ve been watching you guys for years. When that first trailer came with the boat components I was so pumped, as I’m sure you were. But as time has progressed I’m losing interest. There are only so many green boards that I can look at. Cutting, sanding, grinding…how much can we watch. I can even see it in your eyes. That excitement is gone. You want to be sailing. You want to be enjoying the Caribbean instead your preparing for more cutting and sanding and grinding. I’m sorry but this is supposed to be exciting for me. I know your in it now and you have to see it through but you have to admit this is way more work than you thought. It’s going to be 4-5 years before your sailing again. That’s too long for me to wait. I have a great life but I’m up there in age. I have commitments that’s would be too difficult to get out of at this point. You guys are my outlet. I would have loved to be able to live on a sail boat but I have to many obligations that I have to meet that this would not have work for me. So I’ll catch up with you when it’s fun again this is not fun for me anymore. I’m sorry to be such a downer. Sometimes you just have to do what you think is right. I think this is wrong for you but I’m just a tired old man.

As any Project Manager will tell you is design changes drive up costs, creates rework and pushes completion date further and further out. I guess I’ve missed if you plan to prime and paint the interior or plan to gelcoat most of the surfaces. Yes, it appears to this yacht non-expert there is much to do. In any case y’all are approaching the project open minded and since it’s yours taking all the necessary steps to get the work done as close to perfect as your patients will allow. Enjoy your trip!

Hey Jess, I think you and Matt are insane to build your own catamaran sailing vessel. Even a new catamaran sailing vessel always has projects to fix or repair even though it's new. It's constantly a repairing project in some way or some manner so it's going to be never ending. You constantly have a story to tell. So you always have content. Yes it's going to be satisfying and gratifying of what y'all accomplished. But when people are offering help don't turn them away y'all need to help to complete these projects. In order to get your boat put together faster in less time it takes more people and people would bring the necessary portable solar generators that come with their own solar panels that they can use to help out. Well all I can say is keep on keeping on I wish you all the best my hopes and prayers are with y'all. I'll continue watching and keep hitting the like button I've already subscribed. Everything is looking really good. My only suggestion is to include as many spare wires as you can afford of the same type and class in each cable run and to keep higher powered AC wiring away from low powered control or signal wiring. If possible have junction boxes with terminal strips in each junction box. You will always need a spare but if the wire is already there even if not in use you will be grateful. This is from over 50 years of experience dealing with ship and boat wiring.

This made it clear the level of logistic going on as future choices have to be considered in the current build efforts. Lots of things to keep juggling in your collective heads. Is there some sort of check list to keep track of all these things? Also, you made the point that build labor is limited by power availability. How much electrical do you to draw from in the tent? Do you have a rough idea of what you spend per day for electrical/propane in the winter/summer? Thanks for the walk through.

Anyways, I would definitely pick your appliances then build the kitchen around it that way everything is flush and perfect. Don't forget about a nice filtration system for your water. Also try contacting viasat maybe they can sponsor your boat for sat internet when you do your electronics work. Don't forget to wire the rooms for 1gbps or 10gbps ethernet, wifi is nice but nothing beats a nice wire connection. What about central vac? Might be nice idea also before you close up all the walls.

Confused about the forward saloon hatch/windows. In the production boat we saw it seems like the acrylic window area is pretty big and the opening hatches are smaller than yours but inset into the surrounding see thru acrylic. You appear to have opted for larger hatches, which is good, and you have filled & faired the hatch installation which suggests those hatches will not be surrounded by additional transparent acrylic. Even though that reduces forward visibility from inside it is probably stronger and lighter than adding acrylic…..Is that the plan?
@MJSailing
@MJSailing Жыл бұрын
Correct Anthony. The hatches are for the entire opening. The reason Max Cruise chose the half hatch isn't for strength or weight, but instead because rain can work its way up the acrylic and come in during a rain storm...this helps prevent that. It's strange, but true. We opted for better ventilation at normal times.

We’ll it’s certainly come a long ways from the early days of unloading the original containers but I think you should be cautious about making too many design changes that in turn require other design decisions and yet more design changes- you could easily get trapped in an unending project. I suggest freezing all changes, making timely proactive decisions and working towards immediate completion. The sheer amount of fairing-sanding-fairing work looks staggering. I suggest bringing in at least 4 two-person fairing-sanding-fairing teams early next spring. As always keep up the good work!

Back in June, when we made our first visit to the Max Cruise factory in Vietnam, we had the option of them to begin molding a big portion of our interior and shipping it to us, which would have the boat in the water by this time next year. BUT - we're not doing this build just to have a brand new boat ASAP. The entire purpose is for us to have a boat that is *exactly* how we'd like it, and we get to pick up a load of new skills along the way. It may take longer, yes, but we don't want to be left with any regrets when we're finished. We have the rest of our lives to sail this once it *is* complete. 😉 - Jessica

So, in the picture from the factory, they had the stove on the other side of the seat with cushions. I would highly recommend that you put that on the side of the galley next to the hull. The reason is if you put your stove on the side with the upholstery you will be forever fighting splatters, stains, and grungy looking cushions! I don't care what you eat or cook unless you plan on cooking only in say an enclosed air fryer, and never use your stove for anything but boiling water. You will have gross splatters and stains on the cushions right on the other side of the galley. I am a designer, so I think of these things, and yes having your sink there could be messy too, probably not as bad as having your stove and grease splatters, red sauce splatters and everything else. I know that is the only choice of galley placement, so close to your salon. This is one reason I prefer a galley down; beyond that I don't have to keep my dishes done perfectly all the time. I don't know if you can put maybe some kind of clear epoxy/acrylic wall between the galley and the salon? That might help the whole issue of having horribly stained upholstery all the time. Some stain protection on your fabric might help too, but to be honest you will have a constant battle to keep your salon cushions clean regardless with that setup of the kitchen being right there next to the salon.

Thanks. Our plan is a burnertop on each side of the galley. If we're doing something simple, then inboard should be fine. Greasy things will be outboard side

Curious as to how your one diesel motor & electric motor concept is being received by any other sailing KZbinrs? Think it is a great idea. Wonder how many may swap out an engine for an electric drive?

I didn't appreciate just how big your project was. Is your projected finish date in 2023 or 2024? As for your problem with running cables, I'm surprised you haven't got sponsorship from one of these companies that makes portable battery systems, that you can plug all your power tools into.

When you were rolling in the completed boat footage I noticed you they have no ducting anywhere for air-conditioning. I don't know how important it is to you two and I'm assuming your pretty used to not having it on most boats but since your building this one I think you should really consider it, at the very least for your master bed room. It would make your life much more comfortable.
@MJSailing
@MJSailing Жыл бұрын
We are looking into having air conditioning on this boat, but it will only be for the two aft cabins. Because the forward hatches open, we should always be able to get great airflow through the bridge deck. 🙂

You should encourage volunteers to help you but give them a short list of requirements like; must bring your own two extension cords labeled with your name on them, your own drills, drill bits...etc. so that you don't have to share your resources but you get the help to speed up the project.

For a performance cat, it really has a strange drag trap forward of the saloon.. those 2 forward protruding sections in the saloon to port and starboard shouldn't really be there... its quite ugly as well

They are there to present an angled cabin profile when sailing to windward. It's why they are shaped the way they are. But then we get the benefit of not having the solar issue of a totally angled cabin front. It's the same way Schionning does it now too
@DRB68
@DRB68 Жыл бұрын
@@MJSailing Really!!... as a naval architect i would say the exact opposite is achieved... if you look at the profile of a proper performance Cat like a Mumby or the Cat that Plukky from sailing into freedom is building, that's the profile you would expect... you can go further and look at the profile of the racing cats to highlight this further.
@MJSailing

No performance cat designed this century looks like a Mumby. The real answer is no bridgedeck cabin at all. Everything else is a compromise
@DRB68
@DRB68 Жыл бұрын
@@MJSailing Yes the Mumby is a great design that is hard to replicate by the production manufacturers.. its sleek lines talk to optimised airflow and avoidance of unnecessary windage.. interesting comparing it to the other so called performance cats.
@MJSailing
@MJSailing Жыл бұрын
You call it sleek and I call it dated. That's why it is good to have options so we can each have what we like. Grainger and Schionning are flat cabin front, as is TS, gunboat, HH and Outremer. The only production performance I can think of is Dazcat, but they are made for English sailing weather, so the solar doesn't matter much to them (and their new boat has a flat cabin front too).
