A playthrough of Titus's 1993 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, The Blues Brothers.
For a movie as highly celebrated as Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's 1980 music comedy is, one might hope that the games (or any other third-party content) based on it would at least be - to say nothing of quality - faithful to the license.
But strangely enough, for as many scenes in the movie that would readily lend themselves to some memorable gaming moments, the games rarely use their source material in any sort of meaningful way.
The NES version of the game ( • The Blues Brothers (NE... ) was guilty of this, and the SNES game is equally so. That's not to say that they are bad games - they're just lacking a bit of that Jake and Elwood soul.
This Blues Brothers comes across a lot like an Amiga-style platformer, featuring plenty of bright colors, random voice samples, and enemies that endlessly walk-and-forth. There are nearly three dozen stages, but they're mostly very short (Remember Ocean's Darkman game? Like that), with several of them taking well under a minute to finish.
The goal in each stage is simple - you need to find the jukebox to escape and go to the next area. There are a few "puzzles" of the brick-breaking variety, but the stages are generally very straightforward affairs that require you to avoid traps, shoot enemies, and jump between small floating platforms.
Unfortunately, for much of the time, you will find yourself fighting the controls more than the enemies. It goes for a simple Mario-style feel, and it almost succeeds... almost. The jumping feels good and the collision detection is fine, but the overexaggerated sense of momentum make the guys feel like they've coated the soles of their shoes in Pledge, and the slipperiness can make some of the jumps in later levels thoroughly frustrating.
The graphics are nice - they aren't what I would've expected, but the small sprites move smoothly about the screen, and the use of color makes for some unexpectedly attractive outdoor levels. The music is also pretty good for what it is - as long as you don't mind electric organs, these SNES cover songs do a good job of providing catchy, energetic background music. Those voice samples do get old quickly, though. Is it really necessary to say something every single time you pick up a record?
There's nothing innovative about The Blues Brothers, but the simultaneous 2-player mode can be a lot of fun, and the manages to stay entertaining while it lasts.
If you don't throw the controller after sliding to your death for the umpteenth time, that is.

Oh boy, this feels so nostalgic. Blues Brothers was one of the few SNES games I had as a child, I had never heard of the movie it was "based on" (only came to know it was a movie in 2022), so I had zero context for this thing. I remember me, my parents and my cousins always laughed at the weird noises they made in the selection screen (no on understood English at the time, and with the audio compression it sounded even more like gibberish) and the screams they made when you threw discs. We only ever managed to get up to stage 6, but never got past it. As fun as the soundtrack is, and as much fun we had mocking the weird sounds, Megaman X2, Donkey Kong Country 3 and Super Mario World kept us far more invested than this game ever could hope to. But it's good to see a longplay video exists. The soundtrack is as fun as I remember.

*_"Rock, Rock, Rock, Rock n' Roll!"_* It's the *_Blues Brothers_* on the SNES. I remember playing the NES version as a wee lad, hating it, and just watching the excellent movie it is loosely based on. Speaking of the movie, my *god* is the sequel to the original _Blues Brothers_ movie bad! It is nothing but constant bullsh** and the characters are all as interesting as burnt toast. The musical numbers are good, but even _that_ isn't enough to save the constant nonsense and uninteresting characters and events in the movie. If you thought that was the only crappy piece of _Blues Brothers_ media ever conceived, try playing the awful videogame tie-in. Why is it bad? One word, *_"Titus"_* . AKA, the studio behind *_Superman 64_* . But, if you want me to thoroughly tarnish this garbage... NEGATIVES • *Too Many Colors* (There's a difference between having colorful graphics and being *too* colorful. It's nothing but an eyesore to look at. The indoor levels are fine, though.) • *Collecting Records SFX* ( _"SHUT UUUUUUUUUUP, ELWOOD!!!"_ 😡) • *Terrible Control* (The meat and potatoes of why this game sucks. Not only do you slide a little after landing or just moving around, but you move a little too fast to try and do any precision platforming. And the snake levels are very hard because of the awkward controls and the fact that ANYTHING you touch causes you to fall off.) • *Inconsistent Level Lengths* (Why is the first level over in, like, 5 seconds, while the others are ridiculously long? Balance, guys! It's not that hard to do!) • *Generic Music* (Every song in this game is so bland and uninteresting to listen to. How ironic is *that* for a *BLUES BROTHERS* game?!) Final Rating: 2.5/10 I have played worse games than this, but this is most certainly not the ideal way to get the Blues Brothers experience. *AVOID THIS GAME* and watch the first movie.

@@Dorian_Scott Blue Brothers 2000 was a video game released exclusively for the Nintendo 64. It was the first Blues Brothers game to utilize Rumble Pak accessory, and is the first game in the series that feature 3D graphics. It came out in 2000, and was developed by Player 1, and published by Titus Software. The game was based on the 1998 Universal Studios film with the same name, and the game takes the role of Elwood, the main character of the game. In addition, the game itself was considered to be greatest, even though the gameplay itself was truly amazing. The game features the dance mini-game that will help Elwood get through the levels that the game has.

The Blues Brothers. are back to play the blues. On the way to their first concert they encounter a Jukebox and decide to listen to some good music, but as soon as they approach it, they get trapped by the evil machine. Finding a way out will take the Blues Brothers through the sewers, warehouses and the suburbs of many large cities (thirty-four in the one-player mode and twenty-five in the two-player mode), but they won't be able to play the blues until they reach their final destination. Can Jake and Elwood escape from the hungry jukebox and reach Chicago in time for the greatest concert of all time?

I remember struggling with playing this game when I was like 6. Now I can see why. There was next to no thought put into how the player is supposed to spot, well, anything. Sometimes it's obvious, and sometimes you can barely see the enemy before it jumps at you. The art style is consistent, but everything just kinda blends together in a sea of browns and greens.

This has got to be one of the worst movie tie-in games ever made. It has nothing to do with the movie. It is just a generic platformer with Jake and Elwood as playable characters. It makes me wonder if the company didn't just have a platformer they didn't know what to do with so they slapped the Blues Brothers name on it hoping the name alone would sell it. Not only is it a generic platformer it is a crappy one! Just look at the amazing level design at 23:27. Fly in a straight line with no hazards for 20 seconds and you win! lol 34 Stages but most of them are really short. Imagine if someone had put some effort into making a good Blues Brothers game. Maybe an RPG in the style of Earthbound, now that could have been awesome. Instead we get The Great Giana...oops I mean Blues Brothers
