@@laflamesplashin2539 , if you're buying a used BMW 4.4 V8 (on a 550 or 650 or 750 etc), get one that was made on 2014 or later (get the the engine with the "tu" designation). I have had a 2015 550i for a few years (over 50K miles now), and it's been maintained carefully. Haven't experienced any reliability issues, zero, none. I've heard many horror stories about older models that I wouldn't wish on anyone.

I'm not sure I agree with his closing statements on who should be buying this car. As a potential daily driver for me, and I am a car guy, it is fast enough, it has more than enough options, it will be comfortable enough and sporty enough and it looks the part... not too flashy, but not a typical run of the mill Chevy or Honda. I am really liking the 3 and 5 series BMWs of this era. Maybe one day...

Wanted to stop by and say thanks. This video helped me a lot in choosing my next BMW after my 330Ci decided to start disintegrating on a monthly basis. A year on and I still love this thing for its capability to do everything. Only thing I’ve had a complaint about is the early model’s lower power, the increased body roll, and the fact that it hates stop and go traffic. Other than that, perfect budget M5.

@@AkatraZzify something about the drive train, particularly the gear box has not been very good with constantly shifting between first through third gear. It jerks on downshifts and at certain throttle percentages on the up shift, whether in automatic or manual mode. Getting the sweet spot right is a bit tricky.

Zac, when you drive it in automatic the response is up to the computer, you can change that. I always drove standard cars. Now I learned a bit that some of these cars on automatic mode respond to your pedal needs. So for example before a straight road where you are planning on going full throttle step on the pedal quickly, so it changes gear to a lower one, or you use the pedal shift to go back. This is the same thing with the Benz. There are so many techniques on handling these cars while driving automatic, unless you want to handle that manually. These cars are amazing, 550i xdrive

How much turbo lag were you experiencing? I haven't driven a newer 550i yet but am looking at buying one and in all my research everyone says the turbo lag is very minimal and almost unnoticeable. You're the first one I've heard complain about it. I've driven older turbocharged cars and experienced some real turbo lag. Literally you push the pedal to the floor and three seconds later you're shoved back in your seat. I guess I'll have to wait and see for myself.

Reminder that this is a 2014. I've driven a lot of turbocharged cars like the 2018 AMG GTS and McLaren 570S which have literally no lag. This car is not like those cars. As I've said in the video, it takes about as much time 0-15mph as it does 15-60mph. Don't get me wrong, when the turbos kick in it pulls like mad. But you can at least count off 2 seconds before they really spool up from a dead stop launch (no launch control).

My dad had a -12 550i xDrive. Even when I pushed the car from low RPM I really couldn't notice any disturbing turbo-lag what so ever. This was, however, the 408 hp engine and not the 449 hp one. I have a hard time believing that they implemented more lag by tuning the engine for extra hp, but heck, what do I really now.

Korey Price I have the 2014 M sport model. If you have it in sport mode you want notice any lag. If it’s in comfort mode it may take up to 2 seconds for the turbo to kick in. I love it but had to replace the turbo suck pump and connecting hoses on it. They had a partial recall on some made from a specific plant ,but not mine. As one person said great car but get the extended warranty

I have been doing a lot of reading on the 550i and 535i the last week... seems 2014 and newer are better for the 550 as they made improvements to the engine, fixes to improve reliability. Car should make between 550 and 600 HP with some bolt ons and tuning. The 535i gets better MPG, but isn't as fast, and is less roomy. I really am digging the 550i with AWD.

Meri Korqa I say that because I have heard many people complaining about the 550i f10 lacking sound. I once heard a 650i sports pack turn on during cold start and holy fuck did it sound nice but then I discovered that the 6 series has a different exhaust to the 5 series. They have M sports exhaust the same way the X5 has. The 5 series apparently does not have this exhaust and therefore the sound is a bit toned down. But if this sound from the video is stock, then it's not sounding bad at all

I would say that is going to boil down to maintenance and repairs. How much can you do yourself? If the answer is none, or not much, you will need to budget for repairs and maintenance. So if you have a car payment and insurance, you should set aside cash for maintenance. And if you plan on modifications, then add that to the budget.

I have 2015 550i xdrive m sport and can't say enough great things about it. I have had M5, 911's and Range Rover Sport and for versatility and absolute pleasure of driving this car is amazing. It has been fantastic in the snow and is phenomenally quick and fast. I agreed with the video I also like it because as a daily driver it is a sleeper. The general public has NO idea how this car can perform. GREAT car!!

i opted for the 535 for the better mpg. also one of the factor was reliability, one buddy had a 2012 550 with numerous issue with cooling and plastic component in the engine bay melting, oil leak, etc.

That's not a proper solution. The car should not need a tune or a sprint booster to get rid of a problem that the engineers at BMW could have easily overcome. I had to tick the Audi RS3 off my list since it's horribly laggy in terms of response which is not only annoying in a car that has so much power it can be a safety issue.

My shop replaced an engine for a client that spun a rod bearing...$$$$$ sent the motor out to be rebuilt..once the entire job was complete $28k. If you want a new motor from BMW $35k..

Go source all the parts needed such as pistons/rods/head work and it will not exceed $2k which include gaskets, head studs, oils, ect. A good shop should not exceed 2k in labor unless its doing performance work so with taxes ect maybe 5k at most. Over 5k for a brand new rebuilt engine is armed robbery. Your shop must be big and has a high cost ovehead price to pay by charging rich ppl that much or yall sourced out most of the work which drives the price up..... Ppl always remember this, Jordan 1 Sneakers cost $16 bucks to make which includes materials, labor, and over head yet profits exceed over $100 bucks lol. Same applies here. Buy the parts your self and find a good shop that will charge labor under 2k. Dont be a fool in todays world!!!!

@@laylow96 i believe the complete time to remove, rebuild and install is is like 60 hours, then replacement of a bunch of plastics , seals, hoses, turbo rebuild. starts adding up. i dont know where you can get an s63 or s63tu used for less then 5k used but then 20 hours of r & r. just in labor your math doesnt add up then add all parts.. I run a 5 star shop we dont price gouge and the math is accurate. were also not interested in peoples personal finances the job costs what the job costs. in this case the customer found his own engine rebuilder . the cost of the crank alone was $1000. never mind all the other stuff. now if your talking abouit the n62 engine thats more in the ball park of your price point.

I would suggest you find a better 550i,because l get NO turbo lag with mine. Having had the AC Schnitzer exhaust,wheels and tune might help.But NO lag before that.This car makes the M5 look like a mini when in Sport plus,much prefer it to the M5 and it looks better,is in more demand,and harder to come by a good one.

After owning/collecting over 100 cars, dare I say this is the best car I’ve ever owned. In my collection, there are about 15 Ferrari, 12 super Porsche’s including the venerable 1973 2.7 RS. as for the Ferrari, there is the LaFerrari, the GTO, the F12 TdF... Furthermore, I have also the Rolls Royce’s. Every morning, when I go to my 20,000 sq.ft. car warehouse, I invariably gravitate towards the BMW, which I have seven. The 550i wins over all the other cars, hands down. I owned for over 5.5 years. Never, and I say never did the car gave me any problems. It just starts and go. None of my other cars, including 4 Mercedes AMG65 (coupé and sedans plus an SL) can boast this. Buy one used with confidence, buy anything from 2012 onward. You won’t regret it except for that smile that you have that other drivers wouldn’t understand.

Not sure what mods you've got on your 335, but the 550i xDrive hits 0-60 in 4.3 and the quarter mile in 12.8 at 111mph...a race you'd lose.

This is the n63tu 100% more reliable my dad has one with 158k miles a 2014 got it at 81k and has done nothing but oil changes and stuff like that.

My 2013 BMW 550i M sport was my first BMW, and it will be the last. Complete engine failure at 35000 miles, fuel pumps replace at 28,000 miles, soft-close doors on driver door are not working along with a slew of other crap. This was the worst buying experience I've ever had and will never make that mistake again. On top of that within 2 years and 25000 miles the car has depreciated half of its value.

Man I never knew the F10 was that unreliable. Seems to me ill never beable to enjoy a BMW unless I ignore the possibility of unnecessary repairs. Wear and tear cost are expect but the fact that your engine failed at 35k is ridiculous af.

I also have a 2013 BMW 550i with all the m-sport stuff and have had zero problems with it. I drive it 15,000 miles per year, and sometimes I (allegedly) have a lead foot. I've driven it from LA to Vegas a number of times and boy it's the ideal car for that. Fast when you need it, but stress-free in the stop and go traffic we get in both places.
