RNLI all weathers have harness and securing points on the flying bridge too so if they go over and the coxswain is on that position, he's coming along for the ride. Anyone caught on the outer deck has plenty of railings to grab on and it'd just hold on tight, hold breath and pray really, really fast in your head. In the wheelhouse and even in the engine space there are rails run along the deckhead and bulkheads that are basically giant "OH JESUS!" handles too 🤗

Here's the thing to remember with self-righting motor lifeboats: just because it CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD. The surfmen take great care to avoid rolling the boat as much as possible, because rolling it is not a clean move. It'll flip back upright, but you're gonna break some stuff in the process. It's not designed to just get rolled and abused; it's designed to be able to survive and get you back to safety if conditions ever get that bad. Coast Guard rocks.
@SPX157

Why can’t they make it do both?
@MultiPurposeReviewer
@MultiPurposeReviewer Жыл бұрын
@@SPX157 It just isn't practical from a construction or money standpoint. You've got things that are inherently delicate like antennas, electronics, controls, radar, etc, that simply can't take excessive abuse and can't really be designed to take it, at least not without great cost. Think of designing a car. You could theoretically design a car that would take no damage in a crash, like it would be so rigid that it wouldn't scratch or deform at all. But it would be ridiculously expensive and impractical. For example, you'd have to encase the headlights in some kind of reinforced medium to ensure they wouldn't break, but what happens when one burns out? It's a whole lot harder to replace. It's the same with the MLBs. You probably COULD make it survive anything. But it's too expensive and the tradeoffs are too great.

@waynemattson9143 Жыл бұрын
As far as fuel delivery, they have what is called a fuel bonnet in the tank. Essentially what it is is an upside down cup at the end of the fuel suction line. When the boat capsizes it becomes right side up and will be full of fuel. Which will provide enough fuel for the engines to continue to run for for maybe 20 seconds or so, long enough for the boat to right itself

@polybius223
@polybius223 Жыл бұрын
@@smug3348 The collision with the iceberg didn’t cause it to break in half, it broke in half because of the ship not being able to support all the weight of the stern (and the people on it) when it was lifted out of the water. A good way to demonstrate this, is by resting a pencil by its center, like a teeter totter, on the edge of a table, and then putting weight on both ends.
@bobdaniels9056
@bobdaniels9056 Жыл бұрын
@@smug3348 thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard, and I have an iq of 102 (below average) The Titanic had a double hull, and the iceberg only hit its portside bow, which actually only popped a few screws out (a lot of people thought it was a 300ft gash in the hull) The water was contained for two hour. The ship took another hour for water to hit the deck, and then it took another hour for the water to reach its center of gravity. By that time, the ship had a lot of stress on its double hull, which was made to be able to scrape rocks and not puncture, which then forced the center of gravity to shift, while with the weight, made half of the double hull snap. The snapping of the double hull made the entire ship snap, and it was only hanging on from a small thread on the double hull.

@@alexandersmith3989 it is a ‘water tight’ ship but ultimately water would find its way in somewhere. but the pressure of the ocean pressing on the hatches leading into the boat would make it near impossible to open if the boat was upside down. another reason why we don’t go in there especially during heavy seas (sometimes 30 footers) we stand out there on the deck strap ourselves to some D rings with what we call heavy weather belts and hold on for dear life. if the ship flips it’s better to be floating in the ocean then stuck underneath it or inside it

Calling a submarine a boat is basically the land equivalent of calling an airplane a car.... Anyway, in modern motorized craft a "ship" is a large ocean-going vessel (or one intended for deep-water transport, such as across a sea), while all others are "boats" and are mostly meant for use in shallower waters (coastlines, rivers, lakes, etc...).

technically those CG boats are self righting and self bailing. The orange survival boats are also semi submersible. They can do a 360 roll (even a end over end) but since they roll back they aren't capsized. However its very dangerous (esp if you hit ground) and damages a lot of expensive electronic equipment. The CG crew should be strapped in and must hold their breath since they normally drive topside. Most ships have a maximum roll angle where they can't normally recover. That max is based on their watertight doors being closed. Remaining buoyant (very common for many boats) doesn't make it self righting. But the silver 47'MLB pictured, added a huge air chamber (under the radar) that helps quickly right it.

Was a KNRM open day, where there was a guy from a nother station who knew my dad who is also a volunteer at the KNRM, said that their Arie Visser class RIB got capsised 3 or so times almost in a row, still got the engine running, went to the sinking ship and went back to port with help of a helicopter who guided them out of the breakers. NOTE the KNRM (dutch volunteer group that save lives at sea like the RNLI) made the first self righting ship in 1927, her name was the insulide and is still afloat and well at the KNRM museum in Den Helder.

In Denmark lives were lost because the thought the rescuevessel was selfrighting. They used the same test as shown here, where they dunk the boat upside down in the water, and the ship selfrigthed. Turned out it was because of the initial push from the foam on top of the housing. If you started the ship on the side it would stay that way and not selfright. In a rescue on open sea the rescueboat ended on the side and stayed there, causing drowning, i can't remember if it was more then one person lost.

This boat is one of 3 variants. They have tested these for a few years now. They are built in Ireland. They have military applications as well. They go out into hurricanes and some areas known for their larger waves and just jam at em. These boats are a true testament to engineering. The other ones are all black and stealth fighter looking. I went to Google and typed in boats that can't sink. And found the link one day they have a sweet name for these boats but I cannot remember to save my life.
