When we first moved from Yorkshire to Hampshire, we lived in Winchester. I was 11 and a train spotter. No school, no friends, so I used to get a platform ticket and spent hours watching whatever came. This was 1960 towards the end of steam. Bonus sights were the Boat Trains on their way to Southampton, usually hauled by “School” Class locos. They usually came through, seemingly flat out, wheels off the rails. The crew scaring the passengers’ lives. We were warned to stay away from the platform edge. I so wanted to travel on one, but alas, that was not to be. I think there was a “Southampton Terminus” station in those days, adjacent to the South Western Hotel, just about where this crossing was sighted. Later we moved to Hythe, directly west of Southampton a fifteen minute ferry ride across Southampton Water. It was paradise compared do the soot blackened towns of home. The Hythe Ferry, moored in Southampton, next to the old Flying Boat berths but all those were gone. I just got to see the three “Princess” flying boats that were dumped at the old RAF base at Calshot but they never flew by then. They were our equivalent of the “Spruce Goose”. At that time Southampton old town was still a bombed out building site.

60s was the best era for the boat trains, they used to be going in and out of the docks 2 to 4 times a day, South Western Hotel is the building you see on the left, but even that was no longer used in the 60s, The BBC moved into there and done a number of shows in that building. Car train transport use those gates the most now

Redundancy, mostly. With the age of the locus, if one gets a fault the other can still pull the train.
