Brooke didn't become this broken person until Ridge left her for Caroline then a year later after he snatched the rug out from under her again and left her for Taylor. It was after all that hurt, pain and trauma that she turned into this reckless, broken and thoughtless person. Who went after and took everything she wanted. I think that's when she decided that she would have whoever she wanted no matter the consequences. Although I love it when Brooke and Ridge are together, I must admit he literally destroyed her. He eventually sent Taylor on that same downward spiral when he left her in 2006 for Brooke. Fighting for Ridges love literally destroyed both of these women and their self esteem.
