To me watching this for the first time Ada gave me leadership vibes. She takes after tommy more than anyone which is why i think her character will continue to grow

13:36 £150 in the early 1920s was equivalent to a little over $10k in today’s money.

I really like the female characters in this show. They are just as strong and compelling forces as the male characters and pursue their own vision with independence and sureness in a way that seems realistic for the time. Polly is my hero. I watched this show when it first came out and appreciated her but now I am quite drawn to and admire her, maybe cause now we’re sort of the same age and have some similar things going on. One of the most powerful characters in tv drama I can think of.

To REALLY put it into perspective, many years later in 1930 over 85% of all Houses cost less than £750 so even over the 7 tears from 1923-30 they did not earn an extra penny then they could buy a house every 5 working days or over 70 Houses a year !

I meant to comment this on episode 3 but figured you guys don't read previous videos' comments... anyway, do you remember Grace killing the IRA member? Before she killed him, he called her a Proddy, a term used to describe Protestants... and there's a LOT of bad blood between Protestants and Catholics. Mostly it stems from Britain's efforts to convert the Irish (mostly Catholics) to Protestantism, but also Britain's inaction during the Potato Famine. Irish farmland isn't suited for crops like corn, wheat, etc so potatoes are the main source of food. Anyway, a disease sprung up and ruined most of the crops. Over a million people starved to death over a five-year period, and the British refused to intervene/help because they believed if the Irish stopped relying on potatoes, they would stop being poor (make of that what you will 🤷🏿♂)... Another million emigrated to the US and Canada (I suppose that's why we Americans celebrate St. Patrick's Day 🤔). All of this soured relations between the two nations and later, the Irish fought for their independence _(I think that is currently happening at the moment in the show)_ . However, only the southern region became independent unlike Northern Ireland (which has a majority Protestant population and whose capital is Belfast), which opted to join the UK, which prompted even more fighting in a period known as the Troubles (which lasted from the 60s until the late 90s). Sorry for the long explanation, I hope it doesn't bore you 😓

Thanx for laying some ground work for people. The independence war was fought 1919-21. The the Civil War right after. The potato famine is misleading in how the British government controlled the PR. There was a blight that affected many countries potatoes but the conditions the British kept the Irish under left lost farm land under British control and the food was brought to England. The Irish had been driven to such small plots of land that potatoes were the only thing plausible to grow enough of to survive. Until the blight. The British cared more about profit and thier own food that they LET the Irish starve. Capitalism at its finest. Juice the conoly for the benefit of the colonizers.

Yeah, it wasn't a famine so much as an attempted genocide.

@@seth.willis. only to people who don't know what Nor'n Irish or Scottish sound like. The only thing I'll grant you is that Northern Irish folks sound so different from people from the Republic of Ireland because England enticed Protestant Scots to settle in Ireland and their linguistic patterns melded with the Irish which led to the drastically different sounding Northern Irish accent...but it still does not sound Scottish at this point. It just sounds like Northern Irish. Campbell is essentially modeled after Rev. Ian Paisley.

It's funny you mention people treating "gypsies" bad considering the word "gypsy" is a slur for Romani people. 😅 No disrespect towards you, just pointing out that that's why the use the word in the show.
@rhi7788 Жыл бұрын
I may be wrong but I don’t think the word is inherently always a slur? I know a Spanish man from the Romani community in Spain and he says people there have no problem with the word and they’re actually proud of it. Maybe it’s a regional thing i’m not sure
@mynameisnoonesbusiness4488 Жыл бұрын
This is still not common knowledge that the word gypsy was, and is apparently now reclaimed, as an epithet.
