I am Portuguese but I did live in Scotland for 4 years, I have to say they were the most amazing and happy years of my life. For a guy used to the sun and the beaches it was hard to adapt to the scottish grey weather but everything else made for the lack of sun. Most amazing and nicest people in world always with a smile on their faces and willing to help you with anything. My wife met me after my time in Scotland and she keeps asking me to take her there cause everytime I mention Scotland there's literaly tears falling down my eyes. I am portuguese but my heart belongs to this amazing country and nation.

My mother, who passed away yesterday, aged 95, used to sing this .She never sang before she developed dementia, but once she did, she would sing this and My bonnie lies over the ocean or The northern lights of old Aberdeen or The wild colonial boy. She was always singing, a cheery wee soul!

Sorry for your loss my mom died on November 28. She was not Scottish but married to my Dad and she always kept us involved in Scottish tradition.Scottish games , Scottish festivals , she bought things Scottish etc. Went to Robert Burns dinners etc. To me she is Scottish . I was always told that the song is about 2 men who were captured by the British. One was to be executed (taking the low road) the other was to go back to his clan (the high road) to let them know that execution is the punishment for traitors to the crown.

My friend Alex was from there. He used to tell me about the beauty of Loch Lomond. He worked in Germany for over 40 years and he was the best friend you could imagine. Shortly after his retirement he died of cancer. His son found a will in a box. It said, When I'm dead spread my ashes around Loch Lomond.. So did his son. He was always a Scot at heart to the death. Unfortunately I couldn't go to Scotland with him. Now I'm sitting here, listening to this song and tears are running down my face.. I have to go there, I know that for sure.

I have only been lucky enough to make one visit so far, but now that the pandemic is winding down I am certain there will be many more. It will be 15 years ago next month that I moved from Ontario, Canada to Glasgow, Scotland, to start my one year teaching certification at Strathclyde University. It was a wonderful experience. It wasn't always easy, or economical, but it caused me to grow up a lot. I was also privileged to teach in the Highlands for a year. I moved back here in 2005, but I often think of my wonderful time in Scotland, and this song certainly takes me back there.

I grew up a mile from Loch Lomond, and I could see Ben Lomond from my bedroom window. After my mother passed away in 2001 we scattered her ashes in the Loch and afterwards I picked up a boulder from the Loch side which is now in my flower bed at the front of the house. Every time I see the boulder I think happy thoughts of my mother and my younger day living by the Loch. This is a beautiful rendition of the song and I always have a wee tear in my eye when I listen to it.

My principal retired 5 days ago after serving 14 years at my school. This is the last song that the entire school, including me, sang to him before his departure and it was one of the most emotional moments of my life. This was, in my opinion, the best song to send him off with after contributing to our school for so long.

My grandfather is Irish not scottish but he always told me of the brave Scottish soldiers fighting england and the suport we enjoyed from many scotts especially men like James Connolly who died to free Ireland

My nana used to sing this song for me but I never knew the title. Her father was from Scotland and would sing it to her as a little girl. She passed away a few years ago but one day I heard a band singing it and I was transported back to my childhood with my nana. Im trying to learn the proper lyrics so I can pass it on to my nephew

My wife and I went on a tour of Scotland once, they were driving us along the banks of Loch Lomond, the driver put the song "The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond" on the buses stereo system. It was so nice being there and hearing the song at the same time, there was not a dry eye on the bus.

That reminds me of this time I was in a cab in Vegas, and I had a horrible headache from the heat but the cabbie wouldn’t stop talking the whole way to the convention. When I got out and paid the guy, I realized I should have just taken an Uber and saved $10 - but boo on me... anyway, I get to the convention and sign in and saw a guy I knew from Reno... we had a brief convo and I found my seat... turns out that guy was the motivational speaker that my work hired and he gave us his life story and how to overcome struggles. Long story short, after the awards were handed out, I took mine and went back to my seat and got belligerently drunk with a few other co-workers, and made jokes about the management the rest of the night... later that night, our plane was delayed, then rerouted to San Jose... a little wind... well after six hours on the plane, and a sore ass, I was finally home... I went to bed, and woke up the next morning with no headache! You might ask what this has to do with anything, and wonder why I’m saying it... The same way I’m wondering why you’re still reading it
