Hey Merphy just wanted to let you know that you converted me into a reader. I stumbled upon your channel, when you released you first avatar review a couple months ago and I loved the video so much that I actually subscribed to your channel, as I thought it might give your channel a little boost, even though I am not a reader at all. At first, I only watched your avatar stuff, but as videos from your channel started popping up in my recommendations, I started to watch your other videos as well. I guess after a while your passion and enthusiasm for books made me revaluate my own stance on them. Anyway, in one of your videos you mentioned that peter pan was one of your favorite books and I figured that it was worth a shot, so I ended up ordering it on amazon with a bunch of other books. In the beginning it was rather difficult for me to understand everything as English is not my native language, but I powered through and at the end I actually enjoyed reading it and felt a sense of accomplishment. Since then I have read Frankenstein and a bunch of books from Kafka as I am from Austria and he is probably the most famous author from my country. I am currently reading the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and I am loving it. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you probably also changed the life of many other with your channel and the work that you put into your videos.

5 word to describe reading for me, “it means just about everything”. That may be a slight over exaggeration but not far off. Also, I get what you mean about audiobooks. On my hour ride bus trip into and back home from work during the week I can listen to them. But outside of that, I can’t really listen to them. I think the only audiobook I listened to outside of my commute time were the King Killer Chronicles. And I am pretty sure I only did that because the reader was amazing. I’d suggest it to you, but I know you have already read both KKC books.

Ok, now I need to try the "read-my-favorite-book-as-a-gift" strategy, because my husband doesn't see the point of reading a book unless we experience it together. He prefers being read to than reading for himself, and it makes me mad because some books are just so intimate, it just doesn't feel right to read them out loud! Now we're working through Death on The Nile (only 2 chapters in, we don't read it everyday) and I can't wait to read him The Giver (I read it twice already but I really don't get tired of it, the themes explored are deep enough and I love it ^^). I try reading him relatively short books because overdescriptive ones tire him quickly enough.

Well, you’ve kind of turned me into a reader too... not quite, but kind of. I was a VERY avid reader as a child and in my early teenage years, but as school progressed and college came along, there was the internet, and other kinds of entertainment and, especially during college, I didn’t have time to read anything that wasn’t FOR college (granted, I majored in English, so I still read a ton of literature), and after I graduated I simply didn’t read anymore. I guess I was tired. I went for years without reading a single book. Then in 2017 I decided that I wanted to go back to reading and I tried. I read 6 books that year and it was amazing. I read three during the course of the year, and then my aunt gave me The Hunger Games trilogy for Christmas and I had never read it before... what happened: in 4 days, before New Year’s Eve, I was done with them all! hahaha In 2018 I found your channel through your Harry Potter unpopular opinions (or plot holes?, I don’t remember) video and subscribed and since then I have bought so many books and read so much more, and found so many other booktubers (and become a Sanderson fan, obviously). So, thanks a lot!

I think how much time I spend reading a day is dependent on whether I want to watch a movie that day or not. Or where I see the movie. If I'm watching a movie on my computer, then that usually accounts for my free time of the day (Not including the time I waste watching KZbin). If I see a movie in the theater, I usually do that earlier in the day, and I'll usually read on the bus there. On the way back, I'm usually still processing the movie, so reading might be too much of a distraction. To me, books and movies are equals.

1. What is the longest amount of time you can comfortably go without picking up a book? - I don't need to read (but I like to), as it's more storytelling I love-which movies and TV shows fulfill as well. So I can go without for a pretty long time. 2. How many books do you carry on your person (physical or device) at any one time? - Only one, if I know I'll be in situations where I have to sit around with nothing to do. Otherwise, I don't. 3. Do you keep every book you buy/receive or are you happy to pass them on to make space for more? - I've given books away to a free library exchange-thing we have here. 4. How long would you spend in a bookshop on a standard visit? - I don't like shopping. I just want to get in and out as quickly as possible. 5. How much time per day do you actually spend reading? - Depends. Some days none, some days it's all I do. 6. Where does the task “picking up a book” appear on your daily to-do list? - I don't have daily to-do lists. So, never. 🤷 I read when I'm in the mood. 7. How many books do you reckon you own in total (include ebooks)? - No idea. Maybe a hundred or thereabout. 8. Approximately how often do you bring up books in conversation? - If I'm talking about how my writing is going, every now and again, but otherwise I usually don't. 9. What is the biggest book (page count) you have finished reading? - I think it's The Wise Man's Fear, which is 994 pages. 10. Is there a book you had to get your hands on against all odds (searched bookstore, online digging, stalked author, etc.)? - Not that I can recall. But I hate when books have the movie cover. So I'll go to great lengths to find a version that doesn't have that. 11. Is there a book you struggled to finish because you refused to DNF? - Yes, but right now I can't remember the name. 😆 12. What are 3 (some) of your main book goals for 2020 or 2021 (if you’ve started planning)? - Finish 👏 My 👏 Book 👏 That's the goal above everything else, and I'm really close. I'm up to 108 chapters and only have two-three chapters more to go. 💪 (Yes, it's a brick. 😅) 13. Have you ever had the privilege of converting someone into a reader (by inspiration or your incessant nagging)? - Not to my knowledge. 14. Describe what books mean to you in FIVE words. - Escape from a harsh reality.

To me a books purpose is to follow one of the 3E principles. Escapism, Education, and Empathy. What makes a great book? When it touches two more more of the principles.

I don't really like Escapism. I don't really want to read a book to escape from the real world, but to enter into another.

I have a hard time enjoying a story when I'm having problems in life. I want to believe there is goodness in my life before I'm ready to accept there is goodness in the world of the story.

I also have a difficult time reading ebooks. I was a delayed reader but hadn't considered that may be the reason why I struggle.
