It seems like you guys are in a bubble. most kids are not under pressure to get into an elite college. every year 10s of thousands of kids enroll at Ohio State, the University of Florida, UCLA, etc. Do you think their parents are all dissappointed? Most colleges do not turn away a kid with decent grades because he did not have enough extra-curricular activities on his transcript.

In the United States today, you have NO hope of being a culturally literate or critical thinking individual unless you have gone to college. This is due to how much content in secondary education has been severely dumbed down coupled with far too much extremist propaganda (Joe Rogan, Elon Musk's profiles, NEWSMAX, and KZbin conspiracy videos) students them access after high school. Social media should be banned for all individuals under 17, and ALL educators MUST be onboard with teaching advanced content at ALL grade levels. Too many good teachers leave because they are not only making less as a teacher than they would in any other advanced country, but they are also listening to students complain that other teachers are allowing them to read garbage that is not literature and three or four grade levels below them. Oh, and when you start seeing education as being "all about landing a good career," you know that you are in a second Dark Age and your country is spiraling.

We aren’t actually setting up schooling. Let’s go beyond admissions. I’m an educator. I have been one for the past 36 years and I will tell you the culture of reading isn’t on the students mind because it’s not on the teacher’s mind. Younger teachers didn’t read so they’re not bringing it to the next generation. I watched 15 years ago that my colleagues who were younger, didn’t have the skills to teach reading of a novel and with that it went away.

Why is a sports betting company advertising here during the 13th minute? Do Atlantic readers suffer from innumeracy?

Our society doesn't have many shared texts, compared to the Boomer Gen. We had to read the British classics, and finish up with a scattering of modern American novels. I wouldn't have read 90% unless I was forced to.

Why not ask normal, ordinary people what they read. This is like learning what the students like, by asking their teachers what they SHOULD like.

Look you have to be more efficient as a reader. 1. just choose the Nobel Prize of literature main works.. That is a good 70 books. Then choose Pulitizer Prize winners, and Booker Prize winners. Do that and you can dismiss all the other books.

anecdotal evidence is only entertaining, not factual. we shouldn't take this more seriously than Joe's opinion at the nearby Starbucks. every few years this kind of essay is clickbait. Lilke I am reacting right now. . Here is the answer, "blame it on the COVID disruption." and therefore there's safety in large numbers. So this situation will distribute the risks or flaws out over the entire population, there won't be any measurable harm
