I worry about connecting expensive electronics to a hand crank with a variable power output, so what I particularly like about this unit is that it has a built-in 4000mah battery. Once you finish cranking/charging it, you can just let it charge your devices from the battery with a smooth, uninterrupted power flow.

It would work just use a voltage regulator

This is actually a nice gadget to have in long travels or camping trips :] not the most powerful charger but certainly a versatile one :]

It would great if they put a extra solar power panel on one and plastic instead of the metal finish so it can be lighter

I'm guessing it's good if for traveling in remote destinations where access to electricity is limited. Not for everyone, but it's something I'll keep in mind if I need it.

hand-cranking or pedal powering is good for fitness and fun. As they mentioned, this kind of devices are emergency power Banks. It is not possiblw to power a cell Phone fully in one hour.

So, how long would you have to crank it to charge your phone? Let's assume their talk time number comes from the iPhone 5. 1 min. cranking = 4 min. talk time (according to this video) iPhone 5 has a 1440 mAh battery / 8 hours talk time = 160 mAh per hour 160 / 60 minutes = 3 mAh per minute TT 3 mAh x 4 minutes = 12 mAh (you can crank per minute) 1440 (battery capacity) / 12 (mAh per minute)= 120 minutes It will take you about 2 hours of cranking to charge iP5. About 4 hrs. for Galaxy Note 2.

I use the PowerBank looks like an oversized Lipstick case. Has 2600mah and is easier to carry around then this big square box. Just buy two of them and your good to go. It uses a USB to Micro USB cable for charging it, and then insert your devices USB end to the stick and the other end to your device and your good.

Why didn't they use capacitors instead of battery? Less toxics to dispose of and if its a crank charger why would you need to store the energy? And it would make it very light and useful long after the battery unit has burned or blown up.

Interesting thought. There are many such devices on the market which do not include the battery. Why are the ones with battery liked more? Because the time where you could handcrank the battery can be sometime else than when your phones battery is dead. Like you can crank the battery during breakfast and charge your devices at a later time. Another point is that there are many USB electronics you could power from this which lack battery. (Arduino chip, fan, light and many simular) This adds this power bank another kinds of uses.

Obviously signals travel a lot further than where the tower is located. Also i've been to countries where they have the so called 'load shedding', basically where the government decides to cut out the power supply for half the day or so. Even keeping your phone charged becomes a problem and this device would be perfect for those places.

Spare battery could be equally dead to begin with if not charged/maintained. Solar power charger takes much longer to trickle enough power into the battery than simple manual labor can generate. Solar would be a good option to maintain a constantly charged battery but it doesn't work at night, indoors or all that well in inclement weather.

4 minutes of talk time is likely more than necessary in a real emergency. Those who went days without electricity post-Sandy & Katrina could have used just such a device and there are other devices such as lights that could be USB powered. Care to describe another way to reliably & repeatedly generate the same kind of power while (literally) in the dark?
