But those 200 years under the Tokugawa Shogunate gave the Japanese People PEACE. Then 'Progressives' wanted to be like the rest of the World and Japan began war after war with its neighbors until Japan was beaten into total submission. YET...the Japanese People survived because of the Samurai codes of life.

I appreciate your thoughtful reflection on Japan's complex history. The contrast between the peaceful Edo period and the tumultuous era that followed is indeed striking. The enduring legacy of Bushido and Samurai values is a testament to the Japanese people's strength and resilience.

I suggest that everyone interested in the events of this period read the autobiographical book Remembering Aizu: the Testament of Shiba Goro. My family were Aizu samurai and that is where, arguably, the most notable events of the boshin war took place. Absolutely vital events and amazing stories. Meiji (and Saigo Takamori for that matter) wanted to wipe out all vestiges of the samurai world, to delegitimize them/validate the new Meiji government, and the symbol of that samurai strength was in Aizu. Also, Takamori was no hero, by the way. He was an “imperial dog” who laid waste to the samurai world in the name of the emperor. Go to Aizu, they hate the guy.
