My parents told me this that the Orange Line trains use to be like that before they were moved underneath. Same thing with the other line trains.

our 9-month-old el bears no telling improvement on either the quality or the concept of citywide viaducting practiced around the continent, none whatsoever....

Absolutely LOVE this video. I always wanted to ride the Orange (Main) Line "L". But it got removed before I got the chance to do so.

If I could travel back in time, I would visit the Washington street elevated when the 1100s (moving ovens) and 1200s (orange blossoms) were on the el

When I was a kid, my dad took me on a special trip on the El. I was about 7 or 8 at the time, so this would be '68 or '69. He used to bring me into his workplace for the day during school vacations. We would take the commuter train in and then the trolleys over to Boylston Street where we'd walk from Copley to his office in the Prudential Center. I'd hang out in his office. I got to sit near his window with a telescope and watch the city below, or draw on big sheets of scrap paper because he was a graphic artist in an art design firm. One day, we left early and took the trolley from Prudential to Park Street where we walked to Washington Street via the connecting tunnel and took the Orange Line. I thought it was odd because we usually went to North Station on the way home. We then boarded a subway and we sat near the front. I was able to look out through the front and watch the motorman run the train as well as the tracks ahead. We went down to Forest Hills then went north as far as Sullivan Square before turning back to North Station to go home, otherwise we'd miss the train home, or maybe it was to go to my grandmother's apartment in Cambridge. I can't remember now. I've never forgotten this trip and little did I know that a few short years later, all this would be changing on the northside with the southside lasting until the early 90s. I took the El on the southside a few times in the late 80s after my GF moved in with her grandmother who lived off Dudley Square. It's sad seeing all this gone now, including the old Forest Hills station. As old and rickety as the El was, it served the poorer areas of Boston and the suburbs and provided a convenient means for the workers to get to work easily. The El also brought business to the area near the stations

The footage from 3:40 to 4:16 reminds me of the television series "St. Elsewhere", although I don't this is the same location featured in the opening intro for each episode. But it does look similar.
@FomorViceroy
@FomorViceroy 5 ай бұрын
Actually, that is the same location, it's just on the other side of Washington Street. The building that was used in St. Elsewhere can be seen very briefly at 3:39 and then again at 4:16. The camera crew for St. Elsewhere would have shot across the street and diagonal from where this guy was standing.

@@FomorViceroyYep! The building is still there, at the corner of Washington and Newton. All that’s missing is the el track.

Nick. When you did your breaking all orange line stations part 1 you've got to mention that Back bay has a squeaky curve That is way worse than the chinatown curve Because of that screechy curve But chinatown's curve is a little screechy and this 1 at back bay is way screechy and so loud

The 01200's were nice when new; air conditioning was still a novelty. notice that 4 car trains was the rule? short platforms. They got worn out because they stopped shortening the trains in the off peak hours.

That’s because the city was growing and demand got higher. Hence the reason why New York has 11 car trains.
@interstellarphred

@@redsox1935 The 01100's were broken into 2 car trains in the off peak, hence less wear on the rolling stock. The headways being 8 minutes at that time, two minutes during rush hours. six car could be run, but this required skill to fit on the platforms, and the "guard law" was still in effect so it was only used briefly. I counted 8 and 10 cars in NYC when exploring, 11 cars must be a "Spinal Tap" train.

@@interstellarphred7 train is 11 car since they built the platforms to BMT specifications.
