This is from the movie "The Big Broadcast (of 1932)". The last half of this movie is a radio broadcast - besides this, we get Cab Calloway, the Mills Brothers, Donald Novis, Kate Smith, Vincent Lopez, Arthur Tracy, and Bing Crosby. Beyond greatness..

Stumbled on The Boswell Sisters on iTunes about five years ago. When I'm on a long trip I seem to play them and Jack Teagarden over and over. Better than AM or FM.

I have 5 CDs of their music. These were released under the Nostalgia Arts label by an indie jazz music company based in Copenhagen, Denmark. There is also a 2CD compilation of Connee mostly as a solo singer on the Jasmine label (a UK public domain label). Other than these CDs, there are some compilations on records but you won't get as many songs as there are on CDs. That's about all you'll get for this group, I'm afraid - no lavish box set with great photos and songs in fantastic sound-quality.

The setup makes them look like a beautiful three-headed hydra, emphasizing from the slight variances in their movements how they fitted together. Harmony, however 'close', is not unison; it's the variances round the theme that weave into a richer soundscape. These girls are the past masters of deconstructing and reassembling a song to reveal its quality. In those days composers and record companies insisted on performances being straight from the sheet. They gave the Bozzies extraordinary liberty to play around, because their musicianship and taste would enhance the composition and extend its life.
@scottstacey7447
@scottstacey7447 2 жыл бұрын
Because Connee was a paraplegic (due to childhood bout with polio or an accident---it has never been clarified), every time the Boswell Sisters made a movie, they had to be close together to disguise Connie's disability. That is why they most often sat or stood close together. The setup was limited by Connee's limitations.
@esmeephillips5888
@esmeephillips5888 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottstacey7447 It was polio. There was a stigma about it which Connie helped to break down, but her folks had invented the crash story. She never hid the fact that she used a wheelchair (unlike Franklin Roosevelt).

Donald Fagen, half of the outrageously productive songwriting team known as Steely Dan, opens his book [Eminent Hipsters] with twelve pages on the Boswell Sisters and their place in the history of American jazz and pop. From the string of titles down the right margin of the screen here, it looks like a renaissance movement is underway.

Although the Andrews Sisters dominated this era, the Boswell Sisters were easily their equal. Their music reflected the NOLA jazz and blues genera that was so popular during that time. It is not well known, but Connie Boswell (seated at left) was confined to a wheelchair due to polio, but she outlasted both of her sisters Martha (on piano) and Helvetia in performing.
