The Bots That Don't Get Banned Quick Enough (OSRS)

Today I took some time and visited different areas around OSRS, hopping many different worlds to see the current state of things. I show you in this video that some areas are dominated by Bots. Judging by the Kill Counts and the XP of some of these bots...they have been running for a very long time! Although OSRS will always have bots, lets hope that in the future they do not last for months, even years on end. What are your thoughts on the botting problem? Do you think videos like this one or even much wider viewed videos like SirPugger does, help bring the right attention to this problem? Or does it just encourage people to bot? The actual issue is bots provide a massive boost in assets from membership and makes the game look more active. They're incentivized to let them live long enough to keep the botters botting long term but try to balance that with what's best for the game

I think the air orb bots are the most underrated ones. No matter what world, what time of day, if I go into edgeville dungeon for any reason, there is ALWAYS at least 1 bot running there and thats been like that for literal years. Never fails.

That's part of it but the bigger part is the amount of revenue they generate for the game, its estimated they account for roughly 10 to 20% of the active player base in between ban waves

It's a publicly traded company, when 50% of the player base is bots they cannot ban them all. Also look at the bond prices back when I started they were 3 million a bond now they're anywhere from 11 to 13 million and rising. Only because most of the real players have a monthly subscription while the bots buy bonds with GP. Bots = company revenue

Basically Jagex doesn't want to get rid of the bots because they're afraid it will kill the playerbase both by floundering the economy and also making their numbers look less appealing. Meanwhile, the bots slowly strangle the game to death because bots make it practically impossible to pull in new players. Meaning all future content will have to be geared towards maxed accounts by necessity to keep the only people still playing the game coming back.

ive noticed some bots near the hallowed sepulcher, thieving the vyres in the buillding right next to the shortcut over the wall. its very suspicious when you open the door and you see multiple people/bots run to the door to shut it, they all insantly stop when you open the door, and if you shut it quicky they will run back and if you open it again they will attempt to shut it

Not sure if you've seen Mod Matt's interview that he did on RiceCup's podcast, but that was eye opening for me as to Jagex's stance on bots. He outrightly states that Jagex views bots as a necessity in order to keep the economy moving and to make items instantly available in the G.E. the way we've come to expect. It is sort of sad to hear that from someone with so much insider knowledge, but he also points out many benefits of botting that most people don't think of. Either way, I play Iron almost exclusively now so I've come to be rather indifferent on the subject over the years.

I think Mod Matts understanding of how the economy works, and how bots positively or negatively influence it, and what the real implications of removing all bots would be, is severely lacking. He's looking at the immediate effect that removing bots would have on "less desirable" things to farm, without understanding at all how that would affect the bigger picture. He cant see past "well people wouldn't want to do X,Y,Z" I really wish that interview had pressed him more as im quite confident his ignorance on the topic would have been more apparent. Im quite confident His response was more a deflection tactic away from the issue. Even if we accepted the premise that it would affect the price of lower tier tradeable goods negatively like he proposes, how does that also mean that we should have 50k KC vorkath bots untouched? I think it has gotten to the point where the bot makers are smarter than the 07 team or they have corrupt mods (like they have had previously) farming bots while they work. We know previous Mods ran zulrah and rev bots so what's stopping another Mod doing it? Seems odd to me how most of the high scores are full of bots, the top 10 pages are bots for each skill yet the Mods dont take them out? Just look at black chins. Most of the 200 million xp players are bots and farm all day everyday without bans.

I have exactly 3,000 vork KC, I was chasing vorki but never caught him and just called it at 3k. I was doing very casual kills, usually 8-20 kills per day for months on w320. No matter when I was logged it, be it 10am, 6pm, 1am, there was ALWAYS this same bot running kills named "Jcwise17" who is current rank number 115 for Vorkath with just under 59,000kc. All his stats are the bare minimum quest requirement stats for DS2. I mean this bot was seemingly running kills 24hrs/day for at least the 6 or 7 MONTHS that I was casually getting a few kc every day.

The problem is that bots earn Jagex revenue. Either by purchasing membership or by buying the limited supply of bonds. As long as jagex earns revenue from it, they'll continue to play both sides. This is a problem that has been persistent since the beginning, and these accounts survive months without being noticed. MrNoSleep and many others have said it themselves; "How have they not been caught?".

Its a balance towards those who directly contribute to the game (and their voice online/PR) and the monetary benefits to keeping osrs gp viable. What we as player need to focus on is fighting egregious violations, as you are doing. So long as this game exists, bots are... but we should always fight as to how much they affect the game.

Bots, for the most part, ruined the game for me. It makes the game feel really hollow. One of the most appealing parts about OSRS was the player run community. That's all gone in our favorite childhood RPG due to bot farms.

Jagex could incorporate more systems like the Kingdom of Miscellania to have AI gather resources for players. People always complain about bots, but the real issue is the automation. If everyone has access to automated resource gathering, then the concept of bots becomes irrelevant. This approach could also help inflate the number of items entering the game, justifying the need for large item sinks and helping with significant gold sinks. The only issue would be bossing bots but that should be easier to detect if other hotspots are eliminated leading to a concentration of where botting is done.

I've found the rev bots will run from me if I click on them, even when I'm outside their combat bracket, I'm no expert but doesn't that mean they have some sort of root access? The flipping bots and the flipping market can be tricky when the bots are online. The bots sell to the other bots to price fix or something, they always profit. Still gp to be made tho.

The problem is that Jagex uses their “player base” as a marketing point. If they actually cracked down on bots that number would drop significantly. Especially F2P where it’s almost only bots. They don’t want to ban the bots because then they will lose money

I can think of half a dozen bot mitigation techniques and methods off the top of my head, idk why they don't try anything in game.

Because they're fucking bot stans who are afraid the game will die if they get rid of the bots. Meanwhile, bots slowly strangle the game as actual new players don't enter the game, and the old guard slowly fades over time, only occasionally resurfacing when a new big shiny piece of content comes out.

I think some amount of bots for consumables such as sharks, ores, potions etc. is actually somewhat healthy for the economy and makes the experience better for a lot of regular accounts without them realising it. HOWEVER, bots doing pvm activities and tanking the price of high tier upgrades should definitely be the more important area to look into alongside the highscores being unreliable.

I've done two blue dragon tasks on Vorkath in a week now and the train of bots doing Vorkath is insane. I have seen a bot with 68k!! Vorkath kc. It's crazy.

There is a bigger problem here then just bots, clearly someone at Jagex is okay with botting. Talk about that, or about how they showed us they can just pull them all into a world and kill them all and have fun. What the hell is even going on? Banning bots will make Jagex $. Maybe not more than the cut they get from XYZ gold seller.

Only time I ever remember playing RS and there being ALMOST no bots was around late 2011 when Jagex finally listened to the players crying about bots "ruining the economy/game" by doing the Bot Nuke. Some showed back up not long after it but vividly remember brews and restores going up to like 30-40k each from 10-15k each and caused a bunch of other everyday normal supplies people didn't like to get or wasn't worth the time for normal main accts to collect skyrocket and vicariously a ton of whining from the normal player base for having to steeply overpay for nearly everything. I still think that happening was mostly a nice way of Jagex showing the player-base that we actually need bots for an enjoyable & affordable economy to support normal account gameplay. A lot of people back then started to theorize (partly because of how everything happened) that it was actually Jagex themselves running the bots. 1). Who owns the account you play on? Jagex. 2). Who ultimately benefits the most from bots? Jagex (player count, game time played, etc) 3).Who could ("go unnoticed") get away with botting for so long? Jagex because there's nothing in the rules saying they can't have their own bot farms to help stimulate a failing player-based economy.

found a trio of matching name bots doing zolcano at 75cmb, all 3 had 120 mining and 40k+ zolcano kc with the absolute bare minimum Song of The Elves stats including 1 slayer and 1 fletching.

Rune rocks in prif are super bad, especially with the buff to the mining gloves. Almost impossible to find a world with full rocks to mine

As someone who's been farming fever spiders on and off the last week, there's definitely a lot of bots, but I don't think they last long. Honestly I think jagex set this thing up as a bot bait.
