The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Imagine a place where water and land come together in perfect harmony. Where the sun rises and sets without the sounds of cars or motors. A place that's quiet and dark, where the stars shine their brightest and the wolf still howls. A place where you can get lost in your thoughts, listening to the loons or the lapping of calm water against forested shores. Imagine a place that's vast and unspoiled, a place that's far up North, where the air is fresh, and the water clean. Imagine this place had a name. What would it be called, and what would its initials be?

I went with my dad and a group of friends when I was 13, so about 30 years ago.. I still remember the great times we had. Although we joke about it today how my dad had to do 90% of the paddling. The group we went with were pretty experienced and didn't pick an easy route ! I can remember drinking water straight out of the lakes, camping, eating wild raspberries, and watching meteors at night. One of the friends that came brought their black lab Pluto and he just hung out on the canoe during the days when we were on the move. It was pretty cool having a dog with us. We did catch a few fish by just letting the line drag as we paddled at times. My daughter is now a similar age I was when I went and I'd love to go back and let her experience it.

lol the natural beauty Is amazing, yes ... but, other than that, doing this is Pure Hell. It was, without a doubt, the most horrible week of my life. You will be Eaten Alive by mosquitos, and will, eventually be in so much physical pain and exhaustion you'll be in Tears. Trust, me, I've Been there.

Sounds like you had a very different experience. We had little problem with mosquitoes or being exhausted. How many miles did you row and in what part of the BWCA?

@@OurMillionAdventures we rowed from 9 am until 5 pm for five days, with about a half hour lunch break .... idk how many miles it was, but it was a long way .... we slept in tents, and had to use those God awful Ranger Boxes, out in the brush, to go to the bathroom ... 'Little problem with mosquitos' ....? No disrespect, but I call complete bullshit.

What time of year did you go? Thousands of people visit the BWCA every year. Sounds like you just had bad luck. Sorry it wasn't enjoyable.

The Boundary Waters is hands down in my top 5 favorite places I've ever been. Have you been to the BWCA? What's the secret to catching fish??

Thanks for sharing you trip! Love the BWCA. been going for years and it truly is one of my “happy places”. As far as fishing the BWCA, the key to catching fish comes down to two things: fishing right structure and using correct bait/lures. Also, unless you are targeting bass or like, most fish you catch will be caught into fishing off the bottom. Many people who don’t catch fish is because they fish the middle of the column and the fish never see your bait :)

In most of the waters you were in - 6-8’ of water - one of the simplest baits you can throw is a Beetle Spin by Johnson. They come in many colors and sizes. That is a can’t miss bait. I have proven it many times…. Smallmouth, walleye, northern pike, crappie.

A 180 rod portage is no joke!!!! Nothing like paddling a canoe for 8 hrs strait. When 20, packed up with a Duluth pack on my back, had one place in front, then had a canoe placed on my shoulders. Did a 180 without any breaks, got to the next lake & I was so spent, I needed help getting free from the tangle of pack straps after I basically fell over to my side, laying down the canoe as gently as possible.

I had the lifetime experience of being a counselor of the international creo at at YMCA Camp du Nord in Ely, Minnesota about 30 years ago. My mind and soul were touched deeply by the awesome virgin landcape of the lakes, boreal forests, bears, campfires but especially by the friendly People I met there. I hope someday I'll go back and I hope The Northern Lights will welcome me again to that mágical land.

I really enjoy your videos. My wife and I have been watching videos of canoe trips (Lost Lakes, Tumblehome) and have been getting interested in trying something like that. When I saw your new video, I told my wife that OMA had a new video of the BWCA. We couldn't wait to watch it and get your take on it. Great video, and your comment about it being top 5 favorite places is enough for us to decide that we are definitely going to have to give it a go. Thanks for taking the time to produce your videos.
