CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Christian (Mel Gibson) leads the mutiny against Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) and the Loyalists, sparing their lives.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
This fourth film dramatization of the 1789 mutiny aboard the H.M.S. Bounty is based not on the familiar Nordhoff and Hall book, but on Richard Hough's novel Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian. This time, the infamous Captain Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) is as strict a disciplinarian as ever. He is, however, no monster; faced with his crew's increasing laxity after an idyllic visit to Tahiti (the search for breadfruit takes second place to limitless sex with the island girls), Bligh is forced to resort to flogging and other such means to keep his men in line. Mr. Christian (Mel Gibson), formerly Bligh's friend, is of little use to the captain, having fallen in love with a native girl himself. Christian becomes the leader of the mutiny virtually in spite of himself; and when the mutineers try to seek refuge on Tahiti, they find that the local chief wants no part of them, which is why they settle for the nearly uninhabitable Pitcairn.
CREDITS:
TM & © MGM (1984)
Cast: Daniel Day-Lewis, Dexter Fletcher, Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Liam Neeson

What's so great about this version of the Mutiny is that it doesn't take sides and doesn't judge. No one is evil or good. In this scene, all characters are doing what they think they must, or what they think is right. Thus, they scream at each other to the end.

@dougmaclennan8654
@dougmaclennan8654 2 жыл бұрын
@@callumfaichnie9677 That’s certainly how the previous movies treated it. But this version decides to emphasize that the men became totally derelict of their sworn duty - for love/lust/paradise. It plays it down the middle. Bligh is a commoner uplifting himself through snotty ranks and high-handed judges. Bligh trusted Fletcher as a personal friend and was betrayed. Bligh showed stunning Raft of the Medusa bravery to survive. And, of course, Bligh was found not guilty.

@@dutube99 This, however, is more historically accurate. Brando insisted on Christian being portrayed sympathetically while Bligh was depicted as an unambiguous villain, which is contrary to actual history. It is one movie I think where definitely Gibson was acting. He specifically took the role as he wanted to play a character who seems to be heroic and strong willed but is actually a weak man at heart and the villain and he does what he does even though he knows it is wrong. Gibson was also playing a role that disagrees with his normal politics vis a vis the British.

I read a review from some critic putting down Hopkins interpretation and also Gibson's which is strange for me. It's their realistic take on this story that makes it the best of the Bounty movies (not the naked chicks). Without putting down the previous Fletchers & Blights, but Gibson and Hopkins are superb. And no, we don't need anymore Bounty movies, thank you. This is the definitive one.

And I think Bligh had some autistic disorder. The 18th century formal world, full of rules would partly cover it. But he had no ability to understand people at all. he didnt get why people are lazy, careless,would rather be dirty than scrub the ship, rather get sick then drink lemon...he has no sense of fun at all. Bligh had an astonishing memory too: thats an autistic characteristic. He drove the men to wild hate because he was different, and if you are different, special, superior, you need the common touch to ameliorate it and he didnt have it...he didn't command their respect at all, they cheeked him, disobeyed him...poor Bligh! People mutinied against him all his life!

This film is great and the culmination into this scene is cinematic excellence. Hopkins and Gibson put everything into this. The Vangelis soundtrack ads to the tension. I remember watching this for the first time when I was in my early teens, late one Christmas time. It was on the same night as a double bill with Platoon. Both films left their mark on me. This is reminiscent of the battle between Barnes and Elias in that film.

In the early part of this film, the character of William Bligh refers to "Australia". This is incorrect and one would think the makers of such films would acquaint themselves with actual history. When the Bounty departed England in December 1787, the name "Australia" had not been formed and the first colony was not established by the British until the following year. It had been called "New Holland" by the Dutch explorers and was also referred to as "Terra Australis", and when the first colony was established in the now state of New South Wales, the colony was called New Wales, later to become New south Wales. The name "Australia" was first used in 1817 by Governor Macquarie
@steveparadis2978

And no one but a few viewers would have known what New Holland was. Australia immediately sets the scope of the voyage. You think they didn't know history? The scene above is based almost entirely on the court-martial, including most of the actual dialogue.

As Mel said in an interview he thought more should have been done to make Christian look bad like he really was,but its Hollywood. I see the real Mel in those scenes. He seems to be playing him as depressive and who wouldnt be leaving Taihiti? Bligh wasnt any worse than other captains of the day,better in fact.They were not seasoned sailors,they were non comms.and young experiencing a lifestyle change. Too tempting.

No, no - Bligh wasn't a good captain and Christian went native... just the perfect storm...

Its kinda funny because even though this movie version is more accurate than it's predecessors... in reality there was barely 10 years age difference between Fletcher & Bligh

Among my friends & I we will always (affectionately) call this movie; "Mutants On The Bounty" after the cute cartoon "lampooning" this scene by Gary Larson ( The Far Side Cartoons).😉

Personally really enjoyed this film, Kept me focused throughout. I’ve not seen the original film with marlon Brando and I’ve heard it’s a lot better, but from a first watch this film really does tell the story of the Munity on the bounty very well. Worth a watch!

Apparently this is the most accurate version of what actually happened. There is also kind of a minor standoff of sorts where people were gathering their belongings afterwards. Fryer said he had planned to try to get one of the guns away from the mutineers for gathering his things in his quarters, although I believe this was set only in hindsight at the court-martial.

Christopher Reeve was originally supposed to be Fletcher Christian I don't know why he didn't take the role. But Mel Gibson was fantastic.
