Ive always loved the way Brad communicates bowling to amateurs. He has such a gift for teaching, I always learn so much from your videos. Kyle as well of course, but Brad's way of describing things just meshes with my learning style and limited knowledge of the game. Awesome video guys. Been a big fan for a long time.

I love me some urethane!!! Hammer guy (my apologies), and my purple hammer and 78D black urethane are easily my best balls. You’re 100% right, if you’re a high rev player you should have both. I’ll start with my 78D and around the second~ish game I’ll move to my purple hammer. I know people hate it when you throw urethane on a house shot, but it works. Sidenote, I did mess around and try my friend pitch black and I see why people love that ball. That ball is awesome!!! It’s smooth, very controllable and has the right amount of hook. After I was done using it, I was thinking about getting my own. Everyone should have at least one urethane ball

Found the same with the purple and black hammers. Purple I needed to go away from the pocket while the black I can go down the boards. I prefer the black on house because I can keep it straight and it sets up the reactive balls later since it stretches the pattern.

I got out of college in 1979 and went to work at a corporation in Ohio. Everyone bowled then and I was immediately recruited to a team on the company bowling league. I was advised to buy a Johnny Petraglia LT-48 as my first ball, which is made of rubber and I still have. After a year or so the Columbia 300 Yellow Dot came out (there were only a handful of choices in those days). The Yellow Dot was made of polyester and it was the start of what we consider modern bowling. By the late 1980s urethane balls arrived and they were stronger of course.

I was a serious bowler when the only choices were plastic or rubber of various hardness (cue the soaker). Urethane did indeed change the game and make scoring easier although some bowling centers did things to try to nullify that. Having said that I think the advent of the reactive balls changed the game even more! Suddenly guys with not much more than their name on their ball were hooking the whole lane!

So, I'm curious. When you guys say you hit the urethane ball with surface most of the time before starting. How much exactly are you using say, on 32 ft Bear (1000g pad?) Vs say using urethane on a 40 ft. Pattern (360-500g?). I bowl mostly on house shots so I don't use urethane much, but we have a sport shot league using the pba patterns starting up and several sport compliant tournaments being held in the area and I'd like a general direction to go in when using surface on urethane. I'm kinda clueless. 🤷♂️

as high rev player myself, I've never really seen the purpose of a urethane ball. just the difference between reactive of how early something is or how much more hook other bowling balls have over other ones just makes urethane irrelevant. but I'm also a casual bowler who only does different house leagues and not really competitive leagues or tournaments. that is something that I maybe would like to do but don't know if I just have the time or the position in my life to get into it.

Is there any real use or need for urethane on house patterns or only sport shots?
@ripvanrevs2 ай бұрын
Depends on the house pattern. If your reactive balls are snapping too much down lane, then you could try urethane. Some houses strip the lanes and put out a pretty short pattern especially if you have a higher rev rate. Might help carry the oil down so you can use reactive later.

How would I know to make a ball change on a house shot oil pattern on 9 pin no tap jackpot league
@davigorbАй бұрын
Especially in a "no-tap", if you're hitting the pocket without jumping thru the headpin leaving splits. I'd stay with the ball I'm using. Easier to dial the current ball. But if you're making good shots and the shot is going all over the place, might want to find a different area and using a different ball to play with
@ripvanrevs2 ай бұрын
What changed is the lanes get stripped every time they are oiled. Some bowling alleys would only strip the lanes every week or two and they used a lot less oil.
@thomasleonard96852 ай бұрын
Oil has graduated with ball tech. Or maybe ball tech got better as oil increased. I think oil followed ball - used to be 8 mils was a lot now there’s 8 left after the strip

IMO, the urethanes of the 80s & 90s were better. I still throw the Ebonite Turbo. I wonder if it has gotten "softer".? If the PBA is going to be so picky, they should start a new tour separating the two-handers from the more traditional style one-handers. I see a very different game between the two styles.

With the flare brad was showing on his red ball, theres not gonna be much difference between urethane and reactive carry down Overlapping flare is what carries oil, it isnt inherent to specific covers. Urethanes usually flare less and that usually means more carry down, you could make a reactive ball carry down more than brads red ball there

Guys, wipe those urethane balls off between shots. I almost entirely throw urethane and leaving that oil on there will completely change the ball reaction. It’s much more sensitive to residual oil vs reactive.

I never hear an explanation of what soft has to do with anything? Can anyone explain? Thanks
@davvyisaloser2 ай бұрын
The softer the ball, the more surface of the ball touches the lane, which equals more hook. Some urethane balls were getting too soft where they were reading below the legal hardness for the PBA. So PBA changed the rules to have them manufacture at 78 durometer, so when the ball softens up it won't go below the legal limit.
@Reclaimer772 ай бұрын
The Purple Hammer was so good that bowlers who couldn't use it started complaining. So the PBA cooked up this "softness" crap. It's chemically impossible for urethane to "soften" over time. "Radical" showed that urethane balls measure softer after throwing them because they have oil on them, in the pore, and the oil lubricates the pin of the Durometer allowing it to penetrate the surface of the ball much easier reducing the measured hardness by several points making it "appear" to be softer. Then they take the same ball and clean it with 100% isopropyl to get all the oil off it and measure it again and it is back to normal hardness. They insist the testing done on these urethane balls is flawed and they made a mountain out of a mole hill.

@@Reclaimer77 I also believe they wanted to take urethane away from the lefties because they could use it for whole blocks. With more right handers, they could only use urethane a couple games before going to reactive. The harder urethane more difficult to shape after the oil gets pushed down

They would rather sell balls for $140 rather than $250?
