Yep and everytime barnes threw a Brooklyn strike in competition he slid his foot across the foul line. To take a zero for the shot, then make it right with a full rack. Pdw and barnes are hall of famers and were great bowlers but horrible lovers and poor sportsman.

I always assumed it was to reduce possible glare off the lane so he could bowl more accurately? Or perhaps to tone down the overall brightness when you've got lighting from the broadcast equipment. Or perhaps, like Poker, it doesn't allow your opponent to possibly tell your reaction to certain situations. Lol or maybe it's none of the above and it was an ego thing 😅

Even in our company league bowl, head games are played but w/o rancor or lingering animosity. But these guys are seasoned pros who know the head games that can be played and certainly well enough to zone them out. How much of this "anger" is meant to make the network happy? i used to be on a bowling league and even had my own reactive ball but due to back then my dad and mine relationship they left my bowling balls in the garage. when we finally made-up i came home and wanted to get my bowling balls, they were completely shattered in their bags. Ever since then i didn't do league anymore, especially with the weird major hike in the prices and the weird scheduling they started to implement back then. I want to get back into bowling and get a reactive, and an invisi ball though just to keep playing! shits legit fun.

Richard, Are you writing from the USA? In the UK I was a scratch player on both major touring leagues but gave up the sport due to rising costs. Nowadays £ 20. (UK pounds) would not be an unusual sum for renting a lane for an hour's practice session, assuming that the centre offered such facility. Of course there are many other costs not least our enormous vehicle fuel costs. Sport is often an expensive pastime. There's much to be said for instead growing turnips, assuming that one can stand the pace.
@richardbullwood5941
@richardbullwood5941 10 ай бұрын
@@sanderslongdrive yep. The USA. It is still a recreational sport people engage in, but the days of serious bowling, people belonging to leagues, and high-profile professional players are long gone. In another time, maybe things would have been different, and someday they might be different again. Everything is cyclical. I'm sure bowling will be a hot sport again someday. The towel thing was legit imo, because at that level of bowling, they are very careful of what goes on the ball. The towel has oil on it, and possibly a negligible microscopic amount goes back to the ball if kept on top. But there are ways to express it and the way Weber behaves, he knows people feed off the entertainment

@therightlanebowling
@therightlanebowling Жыл бұрын
I think it's mainly because if you go Brooklyn then you've probably missed your mark and normally by quite a long way. So a player would consider it quite lucky for you to bowl a bad ball and yet still get a strike. I guess it's a bit like a pool player not potting the ball as intended and yet it still manages to fall into another pocket unintentionally.

@gregoryschmidt1233

If you miss the pocket and you're a little bit heavy on the headpin, not only are you less likely to get a strike, but you're more likely to end up with the dreaded 7-10 split. (the farthest left and farthest right pins remain standing, and almost impossible to clear). But if you REALLY miss badly, to the point of your ball striking the LEFT side of the headpin, you can sometimes luck your way into a backdoor (or "Brooklyn) strike. Weber was cursing his luck in that it seemed he was destined to lose to someone who was shooting so poorly that they were actually picking up strikes on the "wrong" side of the headpin. (Some recreational players are "Brooklyn" bowlers, because for whatever reason that's how they learned, or it's comfortable for them and they've developed a degree of consistency. But it's not something you'll see a pro doing intentionally.)

During my Jr HS yrs (77-79), I was an Air Force brat in Germany. The American base had an overall archery tournament. The kid that won was in my freshman year. Anytime he was spoken to, he demanded his title become part of his name. That didn't go well as his head was full of popularity vs keeping his grades up. Finally, a teacher openly spoke up reminding him that his lacking grades will most definitely keep him from any event anywhere on the base. It didn't sink in until his academics prevented his "title defense".

People don’t take it as seriously anymore. Back in the day, the equipment and the lanes weren’t as good. so pro bowlers often bowled on the same pattern as league bowlers and people understood how good that was. A 200 game was a big deal for league bowlers, before synthetic lanes. Now, they’re bowling on patterns that nobody understands because the equipment has made it easier, and bowling 300s like every other joe bowls.

I liked bowling as a kid in the 60's, but I could never handle all the cigarette smoke when our nation was held hostage by the tobacco industry. Last time I went to a bowing ally with my kids it was dark and the light show from all the video games made the place feel like an underworld scene from Star Wars.

I’m from Wisconsin, huge bowling state. I love bowling, for sure. But I can’t help thinking that it is hilarious and ridiculous that pro bowlers get so hype. They aren’t football or rugby players. They are business-casual dressed BOWLERS. 😂

Wisconsin here as well. I can close my eyes and go back to childhood and remember the SMELL of the local bowling alley. Wax, oil, shoe spray, stale beer and the CIGARETTES!

Several years ago I was watching Pete Webber bowl in a tournament while I was with my 1 year old son. While Pete was bowling my son threw up all over the seating nearby. Pete gave me a very evil eye but didn't say anything. I also saw Mark Roth bowl a 138 and started tossing his bowling balls all over the place after the game.

Pete and I share a last name. Often in my life, while bowling, people ask if we're related. I don't know if it's because I'm good and they assume it or if it's just the usual thing where people immediately a shared name means you're related to someone famous. Always amused me. I actually had dreams of facing him when I was younger simply because we share the name. I guess it's stupid but the idea amused me and still does. I still think pocket seven-tens are complete horse shit.

We were expected to be professional and never lose our temper if we wanted to matriculate to the tour. Now that bowling got so boring no one watches it those same guys that kept passion out of the game are out here pretending to have it.
