Having grown up running old farm tractors, tractors that started life before the loader was even an option, I learned to really appreciate the 3 point and the PTO. Those two functions are the heart and soul of a farm tractor. Loaders are really convenient and useful but, for the majority of the things I use my 3043D for, I use the 3 point and all the varieties of attachments that are designed for it. Farm tractors were originally designed to replace horses as pulling tools and they still do their best work as pulling tools. If I need to do a serious amount of loader work I'd rather use a skid steer, a machine that was designed around the loader. The king and queen of the farm tractor 3 point arsenal are the box blade and straight blade. I might use the loader to get the dirt where I want it more quickly but finish grading is always done with those two implements and a drag harrow. I can grade with the loader and if I had a skid steer I could do it pretty quickly, too. I'd still end up putting the finishing touches on the job with my old fashioned 3 point attachments, though.

Something I've found working with the box blade the key is to start off by building a flat surface on the slope/grade you want and work from there outwards. Otherwise every bump/twist messes you up a little and recreates another bump/twist. Nice thing with the box blade is you don't have to worry too much about packing the dirt down, it's almost easier with it packed as it can scrape off the top layer if need be. Focus on getting the grade you want at a higher elevation and then come back to lower it if need be.👍

I love using the box blade. It makes grading with a tractor, so much easier. I’m in complete agreement about skid-steers, they’re preferential in these situations, but a bucket and a box blade can do just as much, just takes a little longer. It takes me 3 hours to touch up the gravel lane with my lx2610 and little under an hour with a 75hp bobcat skid steer. Though it takes more time, the Lx is still using a tenth to a quarter the fuel the skid steer used, so it really depends on your time frame and fuel money.
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
Good stuff man. For comparison purposes here, it took me roughly 30 minutes to do this 10 yards with the tractor. The next morning I went out with the skid steer to tackle the remaining 80 yards. I had it all done in 40 minutes. Obviously a much bigger machine, but sorta highlights the difference. Pros and cons to both types of machines for sure though.

For bulk grading, like in the video, i like to start with my back blade. Its just a bit easier, especially if you're leveling off a grade. That said, im much better at finishing with a box blade. I'd love to have a good harrow for that final finish though.

I have a box blade and honestly have used it three times. Twice of those being a counterweight. That being said I’m not spreading much dirt, or leveling much land and I have an asphalt driveway. But my loader mower deck, and tiller I use all the time on my 2205h. It’s probably operator but I never understood how to properly use a box blade to grade, because the wheels lift you up higher than the box blade height. Always leaves it patchy. I backdrag with the bucket most of the time (not fully extended but level with the ground) again, just my experience, but I’ve never really liked the box blade.

Yeah possibly so, but lots of soft dirt, so could sink down fairly easily. Would have to be real good at the loader controls.
@6point5
@6point5 Жыл бұрын
so i've done this. because science (I wrote it down!) for small compact tractors it gets bogged down easily because of it's size (54" for the small one) and because of it's shape - it tries to roll the dirt in the front and it just stops, as it collects too much dirt. A regular FEL and box blade is way better.

Wider boxes, blades, and buckets aren't always better (bad assumption). 48" works perfectly on snug landscapes, around beds/trees, particularly blending contours of berms, swales, and flats.

Another great video and job well done gentlemen! I would be interested in knowing how one determines the length of the hydraulic top link. Oh and I won’t dog you for your choice in using a box blade, seems it’s stronger to me and one doesn’t have to worry about bending something when using the FEL. If I were to bend something, I believe I’d rather bend something on the three point then the FEL, simply due to the depths of my pockets😂
@GoodWorksTractors
@GoodWorksTractors Жыл бұрын
Thanks Elaine :) If you take your manual top link and fully retract, then fully extend, this will give you your min and max dimensions. Take that and use it to find a hydraulic top link that comes as close as possible to meeting those dimensions.

In my opinion, dragging an implement to level an area is a heckuva lot easier to level it than using the buck. On a tractor anyways. Skid loader….. Whole different story.
