This song has such a mid-80s vibe, makes me nostalgic. We forget now just how much the cold war and the risk of nuclear annihilation was on all our minds at that time. But also hopeful for the future. Maybe it's just nostalgia for my youth, but it seems like it was a better time in many ways (not all, to be sure, but many).

I gave a Russian student my Box cassette tape when I was in Vladivostok back in 1990. They loved the music and it probably was shared, taped, and played, maybe it spread across Russian itself. Perhaps the music of the Box actually had its small role in the end of the cold war, who knows.

What an astronomically 80's tune! But almost any decade after it smashes into would be astonished as it would still be a hit today! So much power in emotion and lyrics - so much still applies because despite what it was as an anti-nuke song, it's very true that only the delusional & the naive think the cold war is over...

Yep! A lot of people don't seem to make that distinction, which is even important in a smaller countr in area and population, and certainly important in coutries as large as China, the USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia. Anyway, that aside, I used to have this single, and then later it was on another album (I was on two) that had "Crying Out Loud for Love" and "Carry On".

I actually listened to one of the pop-up adds that come on KZbin b4 the music video comes on & the only reason I listened to it was because it was a 16 second preview of the new 007 movie "SkyFall." But the truth is, I've listened to a couple of other movie trailors b4, but I tend to skip the music trailors because I simply don't keep up w/the music of the present era as I still favor the older stuff of the 50s/60s/70/80s & some of the 90s stuff in both rock & country.

"Crying Out Loud for Love" was on "Closer Together", which came out in the late '80s, and "Carry On' was on "The Pleasure and the Pain" which came out in the early 90s. "In the USA/in the USSR" -- ah, good point. It's been awhile since I'd listened to this song, so that obvious line didn't come to my head! "Canadians are obsessed with the US" -- if by "obsessed" you mean we shake our heads in wide-eyed disbelief and laugh. There's not a lot of respect for the country's image. For individual American people, sure (because yes, a country and its people are two different things) -- but the country and its politics, definitely nope.

@@a.jlondon9947 Imagine you lived in Tibet, and you had nothing but Chinese propaganda blasted 24/7. Your trade is inextricably linked to China. Your culture is flooded out literally and figuratively by Chinese culture on a daily basis. All your manufactured goods are bought from China, and all your products' primary market is China. Perhaps, you would pay attention to China's humours fairly closely. Now, put that in the current context: Thousands of Chinese are using Tibet to cross into parts of Russia for work during a plague that China has not effectively capped, or cares to do anything about for that matter. Canada doesn't act like the 51st state, it acts like a concerned neighbour that is watching another very important neighbour tear itself apart and setting the house on fire while claiming it's wonderful.
