The Boxer - Joan Baez & Paul Simon

The sounds of silence, Bridge over troubled waters και The boxer. Και μόνο για αυτά τα τρία τραγούδια, ο Πωλ Σάιμον έχει πιάσει κορυφή ανάμεσα στους μεγάλους τραγουδοποιούς της εποχής μας. Και δίπλα σ’ αυτά προσθέστε πόσα άλλα. Αλλά και η συνεργασία τού Πωλ με τον συνομήλικό του Αρτ Γκαρφάνκελ έχει αφήσει εποχή. Η τέλεια αρμονία. Από τους δύο μαζί πρωτακούσαμε το 1969 και τον Boxer, που όπως έχει πει ο Πωλ κλείνει μέσα στους στίχους του, πολλά δικά του αυτοβιογραφικά στοιχεία. Στιγμές ενός ανθρώπου που έζησε την φτώχεια και την μοναξιά σε μια αχανή μεγαλούπολη, όπως η Νέα Υόρκη. Λένε τα λόγια που έγραψε ο Πωλ: «Περνούν τα χρόνια δίπλα μου, είμαι πιο γέρος από πριν, πιο νέος απ’ ό,τι θά’μαι. Όμως, όσο κι αν όλα αλλάζουνε, εμείς μένουμε ίδιοι». Αυτό το τραγούδι θα ακούσουμε και τώρα από τον Πωλ Σάιμον. Αλλά δεν είναι μαζί του ο Αρτ Γκαρφάνκελ. Μαζί με την Τζόαν Μπαέζ το τραγουδάει. Απόσπασμα από μια συναυλία που είχε δώσει η Τζόαν στο Beacon Theatre της Νέας Υόρκης για τα γενέθλιά της. Ήταν το 2016, τότε που η Τζόαν έκλεινε τα 75. Κοντά τους πάνω στη σκηνή, είναι κι ο Ρίτσαρντ Τόμπσον, που είχε ξεκινήσει την καριέρα του στα χρόνια του ‘60 με το φολκ βρετανικό συγκρότημα The Fairport Convention.

The best musician and song writer on that stage is Richard Thompson. He’s not a great singer, but no one plays guitar as well as he does, and he’s written a lot of great songs. Vincent 51 a good place to start.
