I still remember the day this happened, I was just a kid and my family had planned to go to the beach like we always did on Boxing Day (we live in Australia) but our parents decided against it after seeing this happening on tv. It was the time I learned what a tsunami was. There was a lot of news coverage due to how many Australian tourists were involved, so much of it was captured on camera too, it definitely changed my perception of the ocean forever. Some of the survivor stories were an eye opener to how dangerous a lack of knowledge is, plenty of the Australians didn’t even have the word “tsunami” in their vocabulary, let alone knew the warning signs, their survival was predominantly thanks to the locals who took the time to yell at them to run to higher ground. Some locals were even desperately herding complete strangers into multi-storey buildings to try and save them. Honestly, I suspect the foreigner death toll would’ve been so much higher if not for the selflessness of the locals.

Hard to believe we are coming up on twenty years since this tragedy. The news reports at the time of the event were shocking, absolutely terrifying. We had really never seen something filmed like this before. The scale is still so unfathomable, even with worsening storms, floods and fires fueled by a changing climate.

Long time listener here. Thank you for covering this. Just a note: the Richter scale was deprecated in the 80s, replaced by the Moment Magnitude scale. The Richter scale was tied to a a specific location and didn’t take into account some important variables. Moment Magnitude is what is in use today.

The thing that annoyed me about the coverage at the time in the UK was how much it focused on Thailand because that's where all the tourists were to the point that some people thought Thailand was the main site of the disaster.

It's interesting that it appears that the population on North Sentinel Island, in India's Andaman island archipeligo seems to have suffered only light casualties. The population of the island famed for it's 'no go' status and hostility to outsiders, appears to have migrated en-masse to higher ground in the centre of the island. A flyover by a surveillance aircraft indicated (via thermal and visible smoke) that both groups inhabiting the island seemed to have picked up on the signs of a tsunami (apparently some other indigineous groups on other islands in the Andemans also did the same). And only 4 years into the century and the hyperbole 'deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century' was attached to it.
@MKPrive
@MKPrive 26 күн бұрын
Would be cool to see a video on how indigenous people reacted to the signs. I wondered this. Albeit I don’t believe this is hyperbole, bc it’s true. A quarter million people died. Hard to imagine a disaster that will rival this scale of destruction. It’s a once in several generations event.

Wow. Thank you for the equivalents that illustrated the scale of atomic bomb explosions relative to earthquake magnitude. That was terrifyingly helpful. This event was truly horrifying. I recall when it happened - and I couldn't even fathom the devastation at the time (I did not have a t.v. at the time). Just awful.

My school district did a whole Tsunami education module when we came back from break in January. They were very adamant that it didn't matter that we lived on the east coast of the US, with extremely little chance of ever experiencing anything like that at home. We never knew if or when we'd be traveling somewhere with increased tsunami risk. I distinctly remember being told that "If you see water retreating, immediately run in the opposite direction".

Moribird, I am from the Maldives and am pretty disappointed that you didn't mention my country which was in the thick of the tsunami which occurred within Sri Lanka and India's Eastern coastal areas. Just for people who are wondering, Earthquake Occured around dawn and the tsunami came approximately after 9 am ( Maldives Local time ) and hit mainly in the eastern areas of the small country. Some Islands and resorts were damaged that took 2 years atleast to repair and reopen by then and 2 islands unfortunately got badly destroyed in the tsunami ( or 3 but not sure but Interms of inhabited islands at the time of the disaster that's 2 of them) one of them got rebuilt luckily but the other island, thanks to the second wave of the tsunami which then was completely destroyed and made it unhabitable as a result. Further more to show how badly off guard the situation was when the tsunami got hit to the capital's main international airport ( Male' International airport was the name at the time) Now Velana International airport was struck by the tsunami. The craziest thing of all is an aircraft was taking off at the time the debris are coming to the runway as the plane rolled for takeoff and just barely, I mean barely the plane took off just missing the plane by few meters by the debris. That's how powerful the tsunami is, luckily the death toll was low compared to India and Sri Lanka ( not saying we are lucky) but thanks to everyone in the country cooperated during that day and the aftermath of the tsunami which itself was made into a national holiday to remember that fateful day because everyone absolutely helped out eachother in the aftermath of the tsunami, the waves of the tsunami Knocked off the radio towers ( main source of media at that time ) so they had to even do a Temperory fix afterwords to then see the damage throughout the country soon afterwords. Even tho you didn't mention my country but atleast we all can agree on one thing, those who know the story or atleast witnessed it first-hand, then can consider this as the greatest natural disaster of not only in the century but in humankind as well.
@amazingazblo0239
@amazingazblo0239 26 күн бұрын
Btw the radio towers part is just the tip of the ice burg but in other areas it may have been much worse depending on where the islands are at, specially the east coast line of my country's island chain which were effected the most ( including the Capital City Malé and the Main Airport ( including the seaplane terminal ) ) Just shedding some information regarding that just to make sure

And if we ever do, you whine we got it wrong, the host pronounced this wrong, didn't cover something, we've all seen it a million times. This is why you don't cover tiny ocountries. It's nothing but trouble.

@@Heike-- it's not like that tho, yeah anyone could make a video about it atleast but as i said am just saying points about it regardless based on the information i know. i mean people do point out if they missed something which is not an issue really. And secondly despite the maldives damage costs and death toll wasn't as significant compared to the other countries moribird mentioned, which i truly understand why hr may have not included it in the first place. Which i can give it a pass. Either way it's a great video by moribird anyway

Worth mentioning as tidal waves were widely ridiculed as being a stupid name for this phenomenon, and we were supposed to use the alien, unpronounceable "tsunami" instead by arrogant scientists who had never seen one. Then, lo and behold. this was the first one widely filmed - and it looked exactly like the tide coming in.

17:25 Normally not a stickler but it should be “Deadliest tsunami in recorded history.” Imagine it’s 3004 AD and people are talking about a deadly tsunami from 2900 AD. Who is to say the records of our deadliest survived that thousand years? Likewise, there’s no real way of knowing if an entire civilization was wiped out in the past, or if they were so remote they couldn’t share. Or heck, it wasn’t uncommon back then to watch other countries burn because A, there’d be a lot less help coming than today and B, why save your enemy when you want their land?
