Thank you. Nice to see passion for something other than money or prestige. In the last two years I have purchase 2 982s one Cayman, one Boxster vs 1 911. I joke about Porsche and Audi paying for the sins of doing wrong for so long by producing the money loosing(I could be wrong) R8, Boxster and Cayman. The 911 has too much of a nostalgia driven price premium . 911, best car made right yet doing it wrong. I still have my V8 Audi RS5.

@@peterfritzphoto It's a small world mate! So nice of you to comment back with the kind words; especially considering those damn RC helicopters were one of wallet sucking interests - lol. Sounds like we are very like minded as I've been a Porsche nut for almost as long as I've been an RC Heli nut. Currently have a 99 986 that I got from the Jag dealership I worked at back in 2001 from a good customer and have loved it all these years. Had an older 73 911T before, and while it was still a very fun car and blast to drive, I just found the 986 to be a much more enjoyable all round experience. Kinda wish I kept the 911 however considering they are now fetching into the 6 figures here in Canada, and I only got a fraction of that when I sold it. Even 912's are fetching crazy coin now. Anyway, subbed and can't wait to watch more of your top notch content. So true, about life being bloody short. I just turned 56 and not sure where the years have gone? The amateur YT guys are usually better and more likable than the "experts" as well since they're more genuine and have less advertiser pressure and editors-in-chiefs telling them what they can and can't do. I worked for Motor Trend for years on the tech side, and know all about that lol. On the other hand some pro guys went amateur, then turned "pro" again on their own like Doug Demuro (he's got a Lambo now etc etc), which is cool to see because he's taking home the cash not some dumb publisher.

@listenwatchandwait

@@Gamumee there are plenty of independent Porsche specialists - although official service intervals are 24 months apart and go minor £250 / major £350, older cars benefit from an annual inspection - many parts are no more than a regular german car and it depends where the car is in terms of its maintenance / mileage - many specialists like revolution porsche have a menu of prices on line - I would say that you need to be prepared to spend on upkeep but its not prohibitive and they are very well built - service history is important with Porsche - if the car is 2000 - 2006 its important to have had IMS bearing replaced or budget for this with clutch change. I would have about £1500 spare after buying any Boxster unless its service history is right up to date.

Over the years I have had the chance to drive every Porsche model from the original 356 Speedster to the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, and I currently own a 2018 GT3 Clubsport manual and a 1981 911SC. I regard the Boxster GTS 4.0 as the perfect all-round two-seat roadster and one of the best Porsches ever made, so well done you! One thing most people don't realise is that the Boxster is more relaxed than the Cayman over distance because its cabin has much less road noise. While the sloping rear deck and glass hatch panel amplify the road noise behind your head, road noise just goes up through the canvas roof and out of the car. I noticed this consistently over the years when driving Boxster and Cayman models back-to-back on Porsche launch events.

I was a founding contributor to 911 & Porsche World and Total 911 magazines in the UK and I drove my first 911 in 1979! The only downside of the Boxster/Cayman duo is that Porsche does not offer a front-lift suspension option, which is a problem in places with lots of speed humps and steep ramps. That is mystifying since it shares the McPherson front end with the 991, which does have a front-lift option. I learned this when I was trying to spec a 718 Spyder with the Press Department in Germany. The problem became irrelevant when I was offered the GT3 (with front-lift!) at a very good price as its owner had been posted back to his home country. It cost $30,000 less than comparable’13 911’s, but weighes ~250 lbs less, handles better and gets better gas mileage to boot. I had it shipped across the US after finding it in my brothers home town and he checked it out and I have a warranty so no worries- and zero problems after 15,000 miles and a bazillion smiles. Some things only some Porschephiles know- This car is made on the same assembly line as the 911 and shares something like half its parts with it. Well done assessment! I echo your sentiments after owning: 997.1S, 987.1CS, 981B. The base 981 Boxster has been THE best all-arounder of the bunch. With the top down, it takes the Porsche experience to another level. Although easier on the wallet, I chose the base model because it’s actually the more satisfying option for the street. For the driving enthusiast, it is worth saying the 981B gives you the same Porsche attributes in a car that you can wring out without seeing triple digits. In fact, from a purely visceral driving standpoint, with the top down, and taking the additional ticks to run through the RPM range, I’d argue that the 2.7 with its distinctive sound is the most satisfying of the bunch. The secret is out! 😁

I don’t know if I’ll ever sell it as it’s more than powerful enough for the road and is my ideal spec of manual gearbox with PTV, PASM, PSE, sport chrono and it’s a pretty unique colour too, being Gulf Orange. I’ve driven 991 911s too and as I don’t need rear seats, just seem less practical and they don’t handle as well. I agree that it’s not as pretty as a 911, but as a car to do lengthy European road trips in it’s hard to beat.

I own one of the last manual 6 cylinder Boxster , took a long time to find a white version but I could not be happier with the purchase. I fully agree with most of the opinions you have written so no point in me repeating these. I started 2 seater convertible owning with a MGF in 2001 which changed to a MGTF 160 in 2003, a succession of MG’s followed, my son was in need of a car so he took ownership of my last MGTF and I tried an Audi TT roadster very disappointing with a turbo engine, my wife gave in and let me start the successful Boxster search. Now the point I have just passed my 77 th birthday, 73 year old when I purchased my 4 year old Boxster, I have no intention of changing this car as I get more pleasure from the Boxster than anything else now or the smaller time available in the future that will occur, I am a Nikon user but photography interests me and days of equipment rivalry have long gone.

Just about the best car review I've seen (or, stumbled on). Why? For once, none of that horsepower or torque vectoring to fuss over. (Sure, they're important to make sure you're buying a solid machine that's just what you've been looking for - but which Porsche isn't?) Instead, it's about how the car satisfies your daily wants and needs, and this video has hit every relevant button. I happen to be just researching the benefits that are meaningful to me in my next/last Porsche - a coupe - and the 911 and Cayman boxster are precisely the two I'm eyeing. Things that you can feel with your hand while you keep your eyes on the road...there's nothing better than that, touch screens suck, I hate the bastards. Perfectly expressed, in Australian. I said the same thing about touch screen only phones: I used to operate my push button phones in the dark and or while driving without having to look at them or FEAR touching the screen inadvertently when I pick up the phone taking me to a whole 'nother place from which I could not return short of pulling over! 986.2 S owner here and I couldn't agree more as I initially compared a 996 Cabrio and 986.1 on twisty roads and preferred the dance with the 986!

100% agree with all of your observations and rationale for going with a 981 Boxster rather than the 911. I made a similar choice for the same reasons when I bought my 2014 Boxster S PDK (Rhodium Silver with Carrera Red full leather interior). I look for every excuse I can to drive it, top down, and strangers frequently approach me to tell me how great the car looks. Many mistake it for a 2021 or 2022 model and can't believe its almost 10 years old. If I ever move "up" to a 911, it will be because we want to be able to take a passenger (or a dog) with us in a rear seat (such as they are), and it will be a cabriolet model. But I don't see that happening any time soon. The 981 is such great "bang for the buck," I'm not really even tempted to consider a change. Thanks for the great video!

Great video. I bought a new 2.7 981 with sports exhaust and put 100k miles on it. It did everything you’d ever want a car to do, sounded incredible and returned over 40mpg on a run. When it came to replace it I drove the the 718S and it was like they’d ripped its soul out with the turbo engines…so I bought a 981 GTS. Very similar in terms of driver satisfaction but less forgiving with the extra torque if you put your foot down at the wrong time on a wet day and very noticeably louder as my neighbours remind me…significantly louder than a 992 too. I also found out that there’s nothing between them and a 991 S 911 performance wise! 10 years of 981 ownership and I still prefer them to anything else I’ve driven in the real world

That’s a hell of an endorsement, JB! Yes, I think the only car I’d sell it for is the GTS, too. 100k miles is very reassuring. I’ve only clocked half that so far. Thanks for dropping by. 👍

I have a owned a 987.1 2005 2.7L basic Boxster for 18 years. Despite having been lucky enough to have owned many other fabulous cars over that time my Boxster is still the best most reliable and enjoyable car I have ever driven. Sure it is not the fastest but boy is it well made and thrilling to drive on country roads with that glorious 6 cylinder engine symphony behind your front seats. A classic for sure.

Really enjoyed this story. I'm 33, long time car enthusiast and new to photography (at least with a proper camera). Feels like I'm just starting to let go of certain life expectations and instead looking to enjoy what I can in the moment... So lots of things to resonate with here! I dream of owning an air cooled 911 or a GT3, but I also know how stressful those would be to merge with traffic, and for the GT3 I would not be able to reasonably use half the power on the street. Considering that and the price tags, I'm content with my old car with just enough character, and no big screens!

Thank you, Sean, for this wonderful comment. One way to increase performance is to raise expectations. But lowering them (or at least, tempering them), can increase happiness. I look at all these ‘10-X-ers’, and they never look happy or content; always anxious and hungry for more. Always chasing the next thing, and the next thing. I know, because I was like that for decades. These days, I choose to be a ‘happy striver’ who’s no longer in a rush.
@seanm996

@@peterfritzphoto Absolutely, the chase never ends, I even read the anticipation of new toys or better jobs is more fulfilling than when we actually achieve those goals... There's probably some balance to it. But I agree, adjusting expectations and questioning what you might be content with seems to beat going along with the crowd!

Just discovered you channel and love your journey and insights. 20 years ago after missing air-cooled cars I sold my Honda Civic (Maybe you sold it to me - John Blair Honda) and bought a 1969 Porsche 912. It was one of the best material decisions I ever made and that car will be with me until I can't get in or out of it! Being well over 50 years old (like me!) you realise you never own such a timeless classic, you're just looking after it for the next person....in my case my daughter. Anyway keep up the great work!

I have a 944 that I love. A Boxster would be next. Except for a few models of the 911 they don’t thrill me as much. I have had wickedly fast cars, Mustangs, Corvettes, and more. But even though my 944 is slow it’s a fun drive on the backroads. I’m sure that’s your feeling in the Boxster. Some cars just give you that pleasure beyond the stats. Enjoy!

That’s exactly right. And that’s how I felt when I drove the 944, and later, the 968. They were brilliantly precise, analogue driving machines, which are a lot more rewarding than wrestling with a missile.

I've been told many years ago that you are selling the mystique of a Porsche. And it is for sure accurate. Today, everybody wants a 911. Sadly, only doctors, lawyers and such can afford them. I was offered a trade for a Boxster on my 2000 BMW 528i. I didn't do the trade because of the IMS bearing issues and later traded the BMW for a C4 Corvette. Original and numbers matching and too much fun to drive. A few tweaks and a lot more torque was added. I love my Corvette and parts are available at any AutoZone because it's a CHEVY.......

No mystique. The 911, Cayman,and Boxster are revered for good reason. I’ve driven hundreds of cars. I used to work a car magazine. I buy cars based on what they deliver, not ‘mystique’. And few cars deliver the handling, steering, and build quality of a Porsche sports car. That needn’t detract from your Vette, though. Enjoy - life is short! 👍

The great thing about the Boxster is it was designed from the outset without a roof, so it’s extremely stiff (which helps it handle brilliantly). The bonuses are it’s quieter than the Cayman with the roof up, and when the mood strikes, it gives you a view of billions of stars.

The only reason I’m looking at a 911 cab instead of another boxster is that I swear I’ve gotten taller and now I need a little more legroom and/or room to recline the seat. Otherwise the boxster is perfect.

Hi Peter! I came to your site as it was on my recommended list of KZbin videos, This was very fortunate for me. Your candid, articulate thoughtful communication delivery resonates with myself. I am a 991.1 2014 C4S owner who is completely devoted to the Porsche brand. My love affair began as a 11 year old in 1972 (I followed my military father on a 4 year posting to what was called West Germany at the time) when I saw my first Carrera Targa on original Fuchs rims on the Autobahn. Then in early 1974 my mind was utterly blown away when I saw the venerable 1973 Carrera RS up close! The ethereal sounds emanating from the flat 6 (Mine is the last naturally aspirated series except for the GT cars as you know) is like no other make in this universe. These are very special cars indeed. Your vehicle is beautiful and while I can certainly see the argument for owning a specific model Boxter or a Cayman based on looks and performance,, the 911 is where my heart is. You are now officially in my Top tier of KZbin presenters alongside Harry from Harry's Garage and Joe Achilles. Well Done Sir! Best regards from Calgary Alberta Canada located at the foothills of the majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains. Les Bowden

This is extremely generous of you, Les. My affection for the 911 will likely never fade, and one will probably find its way into my garage one day. Strangely, my earliest memory of a Porsche is the 928. Next came the 944, and then the 968. It was years before I first noticed - much less liked - the 911. Then I drove a 930, and then a 964, and my compass shifted. Thank you for taking the time to write - I’m very grateful.

What a great time to find this video, I'm 9 days in with my 2008 987 2.7l Boxster in Carrera white 80 000km, love it! Drove along the Wellington coast line over the weekend, roof down, my wife in the passenger seat and we absolutely loved it. Cars have been my passion since I could read, even though it's an older model, something so boyish about pressing the sports exhaust button and hearing the warble at low speeds makes me enjoy it all the more. Thanks for the grounding video, you basically nailed what I said when I bough the car about percentage of experience to price, they had an S model and newer 'better versions' but all I wanted was the base 2.7l.
