My dad was born in 1918. He grew up learning to use what you had. Was a very good mechanic. Junk yard for parts. Cleaning plugs until just wouldn't work. Making own plug wires. Always a tool kit in car. Making do. Wasn't a bad life.

Before the late 60s swapping out broken parts was rarely an option. Your first course of action was always attempting to fix that part. When that wasn't possible you'd better know how to run a lathe because you'll be trying to remanufacture a new part yourself. If you can't fix it you'll try and adapt a similar part off another machine and make it work. Only once all those options would you even consider driving to town to buy a new generic part.

Love how they just painted over the dirt and grease. That will really work. And the clutch packs! Just a wire wheel clean,😂. You can tell that they don't care if it's going to last. A lot of work for nothing!!!!

Man I must say, ya'll don't f..k around when it comes to getting things done. I am so impressed they way you guys just buckle down and take care of business. I love it. Amazing work. We here in the U.S. could learn a lot from your work ethic and willingness to take used up equipment and turning it into something useful. We just throw shit away and buy a new one. Most of the time the new one is more work and cost more to maintain then the old ones. Hell with all the computer crap now you can't even work on the darn things anymore. When they break you just have to call the man to fix it. Well done boys.

Did a good job rebuilding the engine but screwed up on lapping the valves. Once a valve is lapped to the hole, that is the only hole that it seals properly in. If he does a compression test, he is going to have random pressures across the cylinders because the valves are mismatched now. Since he lapped all the valves then took them out and didn't keep them in order, he just threw them into a pile with no order. Also were the new cylinder sleeves honed for the cross-hatch. The sleeves that I have seen aren't honed when brand new.
@awake.collective6 ай бұрын
I thought so too although he then puts them back in specific spots, must have them marked. Running it right after rebuild for a decent amount of time with no coolant didnt feel right
@kenhoward-h9e6 ай бұрын
@@awake.collective what i saw was him just plunk the valves in. He did stop and glance at the rest of them because the intake and exhaust are different sizes. Running the engine as long as he did without cooling, I don't think would hurt it because he probably filled the block with water. If you noticed the water and hose there. When he was cranking the engine white smoke came out of the turbocharger from both sides. That shows that the valves weren't in order causing blowby and low compression

Seeing the engine smoking and missfiring I would say low compression because the sleeves weren't cross-hatched and him mixing up the valves screwed up the work he did. Another thing he should have done is put locktite on the flywheel bolts.

That was a good field restoration. Could it have been better of course, does it need a new bucket? Absolutely, and probably tires, especially with the rebuilt motor’s newfound power. But the important thing is it’s useable again and you saved it from the trash heap which would have been a terrible waste.👍🏼
