To the boys in the boat who in 1936 mastered not only the skill of rowing but the commitment to team above self. And to George Pocock who built the shell that cradled the nine, we are forever grateful.

Looking at the list of US college teams to win olympic gold, I see Cal 4 times, Yale and the USNA with multiple wins, Washington with only one. But that's the one everyone still talks about. I think that even with the geopolitical angle, which does of course figure into that, it would still only be a footnote of interest to a few in the rowing community if not for Leni Reifenstahl and by extension that Austrian fellow with the odd mustache who commissioned her to film the events. To her credit, she made a movie celebrating athletics instead of the ubermensch propaganda piece she'd been asked for.

The lane position assignments and affect of the starter in the final is fascinating -and shows how *seriously scared the Germans were even before the race began! (Tho the author REALLY needed *more time in a rolling seat himself, dilettantism’s as rife in the writing world as alcohol.)

I rowed for Santa Clara Women's Crew from 1976-1980. I think the 1980 date is a few years off. I saw several fiberglass shells and at least one Kevlar shell at the 1979 San Diego Crew classic. In May 1980, Santa Clara took delivery of it's first fiberglass shell designed especially for women. It was built by Stan Pocock - so Pocock was building fiberglass shells in 1980. I was there when we took delivery of that shell and met Stan. We raced it in Opening Day Regatta. I remember lifting it for the first time, it was so much lighter!

Thank you! I don’t know why I picked up The Boys In The Boat and read it. It wasn’t sci-fi, wasn’t romance, wasn’t action thriller. But it was a fascinating story I couldn’t put down. Eight years later I still check for updates on the movie release. Your talk added ‘the rest of the story’ with humor and perception. Best of luck in your non-profit.

I greatly enjoyed the video, arrived here after watching the film. Thanks for the fascinating background details & images about Boeing, Vickers, Pocock, Eton & Stanley.

Not absolutely accurate about the Doggets Coat and Badge Race. He might have added that, at that time, those who built boats and or worked on the river were considered as "proffesionals" and thus bared from racing amateurs.

@@ricksmith4736 I viewed the Segment at a Church, w/ the Son, of a Family of “Boat Builders“! It was the most exciting moment that was not included in the Film. I so want to view this Film in a Theatre~ as my sister is coming home , from Australia; and said she would drive me, to see this Fil ! My boy was a 4 year Rower & 1 year Coxswain in HS & in College. We has many medals. I hope PBS will reach across the world, as he travels to many countries to work as a Consultant:). I love “ Boys in the Boat” Such a fabulous, true documentary and story about 8 Rowers who bear the Germans during WWII 🧡🌟🧡. They were given the worst spot to Row, and turned out to be the best!!! Thank you so very much for sharing your wonderful comment, for all to see. 🌟🧡🌟.

Does the family have any photos from rowing that include Clement Buckley Newbold, the manager for the 1936 rowers? He rowed for Princeton in college. He is my grandson’s paternal great grandfather. We have letters and other items from the Olympics but no pictures.
